PRS SE Silver Sky Electric Guitar - Overland Gray with Maple Fingerboard Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Poplar Body, Maple Neckand Fingerboard, and 3 Single-coil Pickups -Overland Gray

The original Silver Sky was designed in conjunction with John Mayer to elevate a familiar guitar aesthetic with PRS Guitars' world-renowned innovation. That collaboration is now making its way into the SE line with the goal of delivering a more affordable version of the Silver Sky — with all the same PRS quality! The SE Silver Sky features a lightweight poplar body loaded with a trio of 635JM “S” pickups to deliver all the glassy highs and round bottom end that you’d expect out of a classic three single-coil configuration. While the original Silver Sky kept the original 7.25-inch radius of its inspiration, the SE Silver Sky's maple neck and fingerboard offers a slightly modernized 8.5-inch radius that feels vintage, but injects a dose of modern playability. Since its inception, PRS has been known to push the boundaries of guitar design. The Silver Sky SE combines that philosophy with a deep respect for tradition, resulting in a high-performance, vintage-style model of the highest caliber — but at a wallet-friendly price!

Stunning Guitar, Incredible Playability

By Ben Larson from Scottsdale, Arizona on March 15, 2024 Music Background: Studio Work, Hobbyist

Like a lot of guitarists, we grew up playing crappy import guitars. I started when I was 13 (now 28) and it's incredible what value you get these days. PRS is well-known for their quality and attention to detail EVEN with their SE range of instruments. I've now purchased 3 SE's, this being the most recent (SE SVN Mark Holcomb, SE Custom 24, and now the silver sky).

Every SE I've purchased from Sweetwater comes out of the box ready to play with only minor adjustments (personal taste) needed. No fret sprout, no warped neck, great stock pickups, no dings or scratches ever on these guitars.

The only thing I do for all my SE's is add the PRS branded low-mass locking tuners but that's certainly not a necessity.

Really all you need to know is this is a super high quality instrument, and worth the $849 it costs. Would buy again.

PRS Silver Sky Gray

By Rick from Grand Rapids, MI on December 18, 2023 Music Background: Advance player aficionado

Guitar is set up perfectly, very little fret buxx, great action. No fret outs on large bends. Quality is imminent throughout the instrument. Includes a softshell case at this price is insane! Couldn't be better!

My most Stratty 'Strat'

By Terence Spleet from MIdwest on October 10, 2023 Music Background: Guitar repair tech and gigging musician

I work at a store near chicago where a lot of guitars come across my bench to work on. These kept impressing me with how nice, jangly and stratty they sound so I bought one. It is the most stratty of all my Strats. It's got the glassy jangle, all 5 positions are uniquely different - it just has what I like in 'strats'. Buy one, don't change a thing other than your string choice. Thus far I've tried 9's and now 11's and the 11 set is big as one would expect. And psst I also like this SE version better than US, just how it is with me.

The "S" Style Guitar for the Modern Age

By Wes Barber from Kingwood, TX on September 19, 2023

Okay, maybe the title is cheesy but that is really how I feel about this instrument. I have always loved the traditional S-style guitars from the big "F" but I was looking for something different. If you're looking for something different but you don't really want to go for a Super-Strat thing, then this is what you're looking for. It feels familiar but fresh and new at the same time. I like John Mayer's music but that is not why I wanted a Silver Sky. I wanted modern features that you can't get from the others, without spending a lot more money. Even simple things, like a pop-in tremolo arm! So much more convenient than a screw-in. I love the 3x3 tuners and tilt-back headstock, and no string trees. Even the jack plate is sexy. I love the arched jack plate. Those small details are huge! The neck on this guitar is beefy, and I love it. I thought the 8.5 radius fretboard would feel strange but it really feels natural. String bends are no problem and slide work is smooth. Lead and chord work is comfortable. Some take issue with the plastic tuning keys, saying the feel "cheap". I don't think so. They are not really any different than the plastic pearloid keys that are used on "classic" model guitars. Tuners look great and work without issues. Guitar stays in tune and, again, the tuners are a great mix between traditional and modern style. I love a traditional sunburst or flamed finish as much as anyone but the simple, flat, glossy paintjob on these is a refreshing change. It reminds me of a lot of the late-model car finishes that we're seeing everywhere now. The auto industry has moved away from the glitter and the pearls and maybe it's time for guitars to do the same (not really, but a change is nice every once in a while). The pickups sound fantastic in this instrument. They sound like single-coils and can produce all the best traditional sounds, but the tone is very rich and dynamic, and powerful. These pickups are hot without being too much. I have a love/hate relationship with single-coil bridge pickups. In this guitar it is definitely love/love. Spanky bridge tones but no icepicks. All smooth. The pickups sound so good. They are just right. Guitar comes stock with the trem bridge decked. They include an explanation for this in the literature that comes with the guitar, and I don't know that I 100% agree with it, but I am leaving it as-is and may become a convert. I usually float my bridges but I will leave this one alone. It sounds too good and I don't want to mess with it yet. This is the second PRS guitar I have owned (the other being an S2 Standard 24) and it is clear that you get a lot of value for the money. Even the fact that you get a decent gig bag with this SE model, at the current price point, is evidence that they kick a little more to the consumer than other brands, and those other brands should take note! I have not compared this SE to the core model, and I don't have any interest to. This guitar is all I hoped it would be, and then some. Well done, PRS, and well done Sweetwater, as always. Shouts out to Ed Nystrom for always taking care of me and my gear purchases.

Absolutely love it!!

By Sweetwater Customer from TEMPE, AZ on August 4, 2023

I'm so glad I finally decided on getting one of these guitars. I just love the feel of the maple fretboard and, the tone of the guitar when I plugged into my Carvin amp is phenomenal.
Getting this guitar from the folks at Sweetwater was the icing on the cake, it was very well packaged, arrived perfectly set up and in tune.
Thanks guys!
Ok… gotta go play that guitar some more… later…

Better than I could have ever imagined!

By Digirati Studios from Massachusetts on December 15, 2023

This PRS SE Silver Sky is epic! I couldn't be more pleased and wasn't quite sure after buying and reselling three Fender Strats in various years/styles. For those three - loved the sound, didn't love the playability.
Now, about this Silver Sky...The neck feels fantastic; smooth and silky and the dimensions feel just right. The pickups are everything I hoped for with beautiful chime. I feel great about using all five positions instead of mostly two and four.
It feels like it has all the refinements many have wished for over the years. Only detracting detail is a bit of fret sprout.
This is my third PRS SE in less than a year and they've all been amazingly well made.
Thanks to my Sales Engineer Will Newbill and team for the great assist.

Great Guitar!

By Humberto Lara Perez from Phoenix, AZ on June 30, 2023

Honestly sounds just as good as the American Silver Sky. The neck is a bit more modern feeling. I will only say that the guitar didn't come set up all that well. Had some fret sprout, a lot of dust from the wood in the cavities, and my pickguard is ever so slightly warped. Part of it is definitely the fact that AZ is 120 degrees right now and there's no way for the guitar to not have problems adapting to the heat. However, I feel like this production instrument I got was rushed, and it didn't have the usual high quality that I expect from PRS, even from their SE line. That said, this guitar will definitely be my number one guitar and will be my project as I mod it.
