This unit is perfect for our application. We use it to record our church service to a USB drive in CD quality. The thumb drive (could be a CF or SD/SDHC card) is removed and taken home for quick and easy transfer to a computer for editing into separate tracks and then burned to CD's. The CD's are given to shut-ins so they can hear the church service. It gives us a perfect copy of the church mixer output with 44,100 or 48,000 bps resolution and compared to our old DAT recorder, the transfer to computer is very rapid compared to real time from the DAT, the quality is the same, and others in the congregation can prepare the CD's in their home without needing the specialized (and rare) DAT deck in their home. Operation is simple and we are no longer limited to the length of the DAT tape.

Not bad at all!

Needed to replace the Sony MiniDisc mastering deck in my studio after over 12 years of faithful service. Started researching & for me it came down to this Tascam & a Denon unit. After reading all the reviews I could find, I bought this Tascam & it's working out well. Apparently, the Denon deck will leave a little "click" at the end of a recording when you hit stop, or divide a track....that's a deal breaker for me! Love the fact that there's no moving parts, so there's nothing to wear out! Also the digital in's / out's sound great. The audio quality is fantastic, despite the lack of 24 / 96k high rez ability, which for some reason, can even be found on Tascam's handheld digital field recorders, like the DR40. Go figure. The only thing that I'm not crazy about, besides the lower bit rates, is the wired remote control. If your studio looks like mine, you need another cable added to your setup, like you need another hole in the head! My old Sony deck has a wireless remote with a lot of cool features, including text, & fade in / out. With this remote, plus the need for a keyboard just to title the tracks, it feels as though I've stepped back in time to the '90's. So, bottom line is if you can get past the remote being wired, & lower bit rates, the SS-100R is actually a great sounding deck, so I am recommending it!

Tascam SS-R100

really unreliable, continually refuses to play mp3 or wav that have been recorded on the same machine. Error message "unknown format" continually displayed, no resolution from manual, no support.
