I was looking at a lakland 55-02 in a local shop to see if I liked the feel of them, which it ends up I do not. My wife had me try a Sterling by Music Man SUB Ray4 and I bought it on the spot. They also had a USA Stingray Special 4HH on the wall I tried out and I was immediately hooked. The one they had was in the Amethyst and I would have bought it if it didn't have a rosewood board. I immediately called the team at Sweetwater and found out they had an exclusive Blue color, with a matching headstock and a maple board, I was in line for one immediately. I finally got it in and the pictures on this website cannot possibly do this instrument justice. The paint job looks like something you'd have on a bass boat, just gorgeous.
The sound: I went back and forth on 4H vs 4HH and think I made the right choice. I'll probably get a 4H in the future, but having the extra pickup and coil selection options is fantastic. The low end power this thing outputs is unreal. It's actually surprising how much low end it can produce while still being so clear. Onboard EQ is insanely powerful, will clear center detents and a great taper. Volume knob also has a very useful taper and smooth feel. I still need to have it set up for how I like my basses, but this is pretty close. The stock EB strings are ok, but I think some Stringjoy Rangers are going to set this over the top.
The folks at Sweetwater are always top notch and this exclusive color is worth every penny if this fits within your budget. Bonus stuff, it comes with some cool case candy as well as basic tools in a felt bag. The Mono case is outstanding and will probably outlive my hard cases.
Can't find anything negative to say, only thing I would have changed would be to have it come in gold hardware, but I'm certainly not missing it when I pick this bass up.
