Marshall Studio 900 20-watt Amplifier Head Reviews

20W, 2-channel Tube Guitar Amp Head with Reverb, DI Out, Multi-watt Selection, and FX Loop

Marshall’s JCM900 fueled the sound of countless rock and metal acts in the ’90s, ruling the airwaves with its bright and aggressive bite. The Marshall Studio 900 head packs that iconic sound down into the brand’s compact, modernized, and ardently accessible Studio lineup. This true tube amplifier head wields dual ECC83 preamp tubes, an ECC83 phase splitter, and two 5881 power tubes, offering all the high-octane tube/solid-state hybrid saturation of its 100-watt inspiration at a far more stage- and studio-friendly 20-watt power rating. Two channels are on tap with remote footswitch control, along with a 3-band global EQ, global Presence control, extensive gain-shaping knobs, and an onboard spring reverb to impart a touch of space to your sound. Moreover, while the Marshall Studio 900’s tone and aesthetics authentically pay tribute to the mighty JCM900, this amp matches its modernized Studio series siblings with 5- and 1-watt power scaling modes, a top-class effects loop, and a speaker-emulated DI output. Capture the sound of the ’90s and enjoy all the modern-minded benefits of the high-performance Studio series with Marshall's powerhouse Studio 900 head!

I was pleasantly surprised.

By Phil from VA Beach

Drive Sound is outstanding on both channels provding flexibility i didn't expect.

Setup - 900 Studio head pushing 112 V30UK with MXR10 In loop & Plumes Earthquaker up front to provide clean boost when needed.
Gibson 50s standard.

Channel A drive is so overlooked by many.
Those evil diods contained within 900 is basically a buit in tubedriver easly covering 70s 80s Rock perfectly just like the 800.

Channel B takes drive to whole new level. "Euge Valoirta" Youtube review on this amp touchs on it best - Chug.
It is metal head must watch.

As for cleans , channel A has that covered. Crystal clear and warm.

It's a keeper very happy with purchase many thanks to Jacob.

Just fantastic

By Jameson

As a massive oasis fan - this amp with the Marshall SC212 has given me the sound I need without any pedals. You can hear Definitely Maybe in its Core. Using it with my new Les Paul Vintage Bourbon Burst is absolutely an epic combo. Thanks for the team at Sweetwater for making it so easy to sound so good.

No Sound & Very cheap components.

By Sweetwater Customer

opened it plugged it in to my 16 ohm marshall cab plugged my guitar in turned it on waited 5 min turned off the stand by and NO sound. I plugged in a different head with the same cables and guitar and it worked fine. THEN I decided to check the tubes but I couldn't because I could not remove the back panel. one of the metal nutserts was just spinning in the wood. the screws will not unthread so at that point I put it back in the box and requested a return. these say made in England but are poor quality. you can tell when something is poor quality, all the jacks and switches feel cheap. all the components are from china but assembled in England. cheap feeling and cheap looking amp. very noticeable.

This is a great lamp

By Jamey S. from Coeur D Alene, ID

I've heard many people through the last 35 years knock the JCM 900 and I assumed it was crap. Having not played through an original back in the day, I can't say they were great or not but the studio 20 watt really delivers. The clean channel is the reason I decided to buy it but I've really fallen for the dirty sound. It's cutting and sounds great in a mix. It doesn't have excessive bass frequencies that you're going to shelve anyway. I have about 10 wonderful amps, many modded by a famous amp maker and I dearly love those amps but this proudly sits right along them. I highly recommend checking out the JCM 900 Studio. Speakers are a huge part of the sound recipe and I have two '78 Blackbacks that really compliment my amp. They sound great in general but pair wonderfully with this amp.
If you've ever been curious about the JCM 900, don't sell it short. Check it out. Mine really is great.

Get one while you can

By John from California
Music Background: Playin' since 1977 when I took guitar class in jr high with Mr. Black, North Miami Jr High

I got my JCM900 Studio and at first, I ran it thru my 1x12 Harley Benton cheapo open back cab that has a made in UK Greenback. Only good thing about this cab is the made in the UK Celestion. the jcm 900 studio sounded thin and brittle thru it. I was ready to return it. then I thought let me try with my 4x12 AVT vintage cab that a long time ago I swapped out the stock speakers for celestion g12, 75's just like a jcm 900 cab. WOW is all I can say. the little JCM900 studio came to life. best clean Channel I've ever heard on a marshall. Reverb is freakin amazing. you can get from very soft reverb to over the top lush, spacial reverb. all the controls feel great, the power and standby switch feel better than the old jcm 900s, harmonics are amazing. I think Marshall hit it out of the parkfield on this one. I own 8 Marshall heads, 3 combos and and 3 4x12 cabs and this new addition has quickly become one of my favs. The 3 way power switch in back works really good. each one is very different. 1 watt mode perfect for night time playin', 5 watt for the morning when you get up and wanna jam, and the 20 watt mode when you wanna wake up the dead

The BEST of the Studio Amps

By Mike M. from MANTUA, OH
Music Background: Full gigging musician back in the day. Now as an old man in my late 50s, I barely gig but probably play more now than when I was endlessly gigging.

I bought the head, and it's beyond impressive for the $. It's very similar to my JCM20)0 DSL401, without the "Too loud" volume issues. It beats both my JCM2000 and my import 20w Import DSL.
It's almost as nice as my Mesa Five:35, which is twice the $ as the 900! I can't yet decide which I love more!
Who is this perfect for? Peeps like me too lazy to take pedals to a bar-scaled gig. Amp collectors, studio peeps, or anyone who loves a two channel mini rig that can crank it up, or close to the same tone with only 1 watt.
So far, IMO, the two higher watt settings sound very much alike. POSSIBLY the 1watt setting just SLIGHTLY might change the tone a little.(NOT sure yet, as I've only been on the 1w setting for a minute or two).
A MUST HAVE IMO for every Marshall addict!

Versatile Amp

By Timothy from Key Largo, FL
Music Background: Seasoned Musician

The Marshall JCM 900 Studio amp is a great sounding versatile amp. It has built in reverb and master volume. I have played it through a variety of speakers, and it sounds great through all of them. Everything feels high quality on this amp and all of the Marshall Studio amps. Logan Miller always hooks me up with great service and fast shipping.

Awesome!!

By Mike

Got this amp the day it was announced, and I am pleasantly surprised. I have a JCM 800 2205, JEL-50, and a bunch of others... and this amp hangs with those amps all day. It does the 90s thing perfectly. The loop is great, and the amp's noise floor is dead quiet. Get it!

Highly underrated amp

By Jeff from CT
Music Background: 30+ years. Former touring. Home recording now

I used to play 900s years ago and jumped at the opportunity to get one of these when I heard Marshall was releasing a 20-watt version.

People disparage the 900 for being what it isn't and don't praise it enough for what it actually is. It's not a Plexi and it's not a JCM800 -- it's a different amp. It has its own sound and rightful place as an era-defining amp, used by some of the most influential acts of the past 35 years. Sure, it's not what Slash used or wasn't around when people were rocking bellbottoms; but come on, people... we can think beyond the 70s and 80s when we think about rock music and which gear is the "right gear to have". This is a good amp.

I had a SC20 head (JCM800) when I received the 900 and quickly sold it off. It was pretty redundant.
The 900 is not high gain like we think of it nowadays. It's more like a hot rodded JCM800, but tighter and a bit more focused. Where a 800 needs a TS9 or Klon to get it over the edge, the 900 can do all that with just adjustments on your guitar's volume knob. The cleans are full of glassy chime. I actually think the 800's cleans are warmer, so maybe nicer when unaccompanied, but the 900's have more sculpting ability and sit in a mix a bit better.

It may be known for bands like Foo Fighters, Blink 182, and Oasis, but alt-rock and pop punk is not the only thing the 900 can do. By cranking the pre on the clean channel and introducing a boost or drive, it can get convincingly close to a plexi or 800 and can definitely fill that need in a pinch.

As mentioned above, I sold the SC20 (JCM800) but still have an Amplified Nation Bombshell Overdrive and a Friedman Little Sister, and I can attest that the 900 is on par with those amps in tones and personality. Fit and finish is excellent, too.

The power scaling from 20 down to 1 watt is really well executed, and master volume's ability to play at nighttime bedroom levels even in 20 watt mode is nearly as good as what my Friedman can do. No need for attenuators. I will say though that when scaling down to 1-watt, you will need to adjust your settings to add in more bass and pull back on the presence if you want it to sound similar to the 20-watt mode at low volumes. 5-watt mode is fine, but I think it's kind of unnecessary since you can get good tones at any volume you want out of either the 20 or 1-watt modes. I should also add that the 1-watt mode can get plenty loud for recording or playing along to records at home.

Shout out to Mason Moss, who has been my gear guy for years. Thanks, man.

This amp is the bomb!

By Paul G. from AZ
Music Background: Guitarist, Producer

Way back in the day, I had the original JCM900 and 1960 cab. I really didn't bond and tried to really love it. I kept it for years, until one day I sold it to fund a DRZ Amp. Then I got another DRZ Amp, and never looked back. However, I was bit with nostalgia when I saw these amps demoed on Andertons TV. For some reason the new JCM900 in the demo sounded much nicer than I ever remember my full sized 100w head sounding. Wanting something different, I took a chance and my Sweetwater rep Andrew hooked me up.

The new JCM900 is the bomb! They fixed all the issues that the old 900 had, and revoiced the amp to be incredibly usable. Don't let 20 Watts scare you, It's Plenty LOUD!

CH1 goes from nice shimmering clean all the way to Paul Kossoff classic rock tone. But it's not harsh or spiky like the old 900s. They did the tone stack perfectly in this new amp for that channel. CH2 picks up where CH1 leaves off and can start gritty and go all the way to full blown killer metal.

It sounds great either through my Dr.Z Z-Best 2x12 cab, although I'm sure a Marshall cab voiced better. Where it really shined was running it into my Two Notes Captor X (Which I got at Sweetwater) and using a Pete Thorn pack he made for Two Notes. I used the PT G12M Black Cab into Pro Tools. Utterly amazing. Either way, cab or IR Load Box, this amp is incredible and a VAST improvement over the original 90s JCM900. Every bit of it is usable, CH1, CH2 and the spring reverb sounds fantastic.

The 5w and 1w switch works great, and no real loss of tone. Back in the day attenuators used to "suck" tone, but this doesn't.

This is a great amp, hands down and a very impressive upgrade over the old 90s original.
