SKB VS-1 Sliding shelf

Nice addition to our rack for the laptop!

Sob vs-1 rack shelf

By Dave from Colorado on September 25, 2019

The shelf has a plastic lock (retaining) arm on it to hold it in for when it"s in a Mobil situation. It caused the shelf to drag when pulled out. Being in a permanent location I drilled it out and remover it. It now slides great.

Excellent sliding shelf

This sliding shelf is perfect for my computer. It is large, sturdy and slightly padded. Because of its size, you may have to be strategic in where you put it in the rack because it slides almost all the way to the back of the rack and may interfere with your cables a bit. But, that is not a design flaw. It is the nature of wanting a shelf large enough to hold a lap top.

SKB VS1 Rack Shelf

This thing is the perfect solution for rackmounting anything while still maintaining access. I used it to secure a bunch of pedals in one place in a rack - making adjustments is simply a matter of unlatching the button that keeps the shelf from sliding out at inappropriate times, gently pulling the drawer, and pushing it back until it clicks securely in place. The slide rails seem sturdy, the velcro mount shelf top notch, and the rack mount ears aligned perfectly. Recommended for any loose gear that needs to get secured - stage or studio.

Good shelf

Used to rack mount an ATEM panel switcher. Velcro is heavy duty and works well. I do like the locking clip so things don't shift during transport.

What one would expect

By Ryan from Va on January 11, 2020 Music Background: Musician for 25+ years

The shelf is about what one would expect for a sliding shelf. It is pretty sturdy and is pretty nicely made. I like the fact that it is a lock to keep the draw from sliding when being transported. The only thing is the latch drags and makes it very difficult to open the drawer. Unfortunately, I do travel with the case so I can't remove it.... great idea but it needs to be designed a bit differently.
I love how the shelf has a case around the perimeter of the bottom and sides. This keeps chords and other items from getting pinched in the rollers or the drawer.

Well made, but takes up lots of space

Nicely made shelf, and it will probably last for a long time. The shelf itself is over an inch thick of reinforced plastic. That's an inch of space that is unusable that you sacrifice with this shelf. I'd prefer a thin sheet metal in a 4 space case, because I use every inch I can get.

It's a Shelf.....Could use improvements.

The pros: It does not need rear support. I imagine that may have a limit on weight but that would have to be taken into account. It has a "velcro" type (sort of a "catchy" cloth surface. It locks in place.

The cons: Unfortunately the "velcro" surface is padded adding unnecessary height and it does not attach as well as actual velcro. Without the back support it does shift a bit when trying to slide shelf out making it drag a bit. It is a problem for cable management. You can't attach mounting pads to the padded surface unless you put velcro hook material on them. Then the ones you do attach don't hold hold particularly well. A wire bundle can pull the pads up. Cable management is a bit tricky with the limited ability to route a cable bundle and the fact it can get trapped between the shelf and the back shelf housing support.

After all is said and done I believe I would have gone with a flat metal shelf. Even without a mechanism to hold it in place although that would be my preference for a traveling rig.

One simple change to make this more user friendly would be abandon that padded surface and either cover the entire surface with actual velcro or leave it plain plastic so users could add their own. It would create a much better mounting surface and would make it a bit lower in profile. If I thought that pad wasn't glued in place I would give that a shot.

Not worth the money

After purchasing based off reviews and pictures, I was disappointed with the build quality vs price point; after two minutes of testing, it went right back in the box.

Feels very cheap, not worth price

By Sweetwater Customer on September 23, 2022

Requires an unusual amount of effort to pull out, hearing the sound of grinding metal each time. Clicking the lock does not fully secure the shelf, and I need to really use force to get it unlocked. I feel a little bit ripped of spending $ on one of these brand-new. Even if this may have been a faulty product, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Not enough headroom

By Rich C on July 9, 2020

One of the obvious use cases for this shelf is to store pedals in a rack. Unfortunately, the shelf itself takes up an inordinate amount of space, not just with padding, but also with the elevated angle. There is no way a pedal will actually fit on this shelf when installed in a 2U space. It really requires an open space above, so realistically it's a 3U shelf. It could have been designed much better in that regard. Also, I'm not sure I'm a fan of the latch either.
