Tech 21 Steve Harris SH1 Signature SansAmp Pedal Reviews

Bass Preamplifier/DI Pedal with 2 Channels, Analog SansAmp Circuit, 4-band Active EQ with ±18dB Boost/Cut, Blend Control, Bite Switch, and Chromatic Tuner

Steve Harris’s fleet-fingered bass lines are the driving force behind Iron Maiden’s relentless gallop — the iconic rhythm that’s been appropriated by an endless number of the band’s heavy metal contemporaries. Steve typically achieves his heavy-hitting growl by plugging his bass into a handmade custom preamp and a bevy of vintage speaker cabinets. But when he was touring for his British Lion project, Steve wanted to scale down his rig without sacrificing tone. The result is Tech 21’s Steve Harris SH1 Signature SansAmp. This all-analog pedal not only replicates the sound of his full-sized rig, but it also enables him to pipe that massive tone straight to the PA. On top of that, it supplies an expansive range of adjustability, unlocking a wide spectrum of bass tones. If you’re searching for a way to achieve a gargantuan bass sound without a bulky stack of speaker cabs, take the Steve Harris SH1 SansAmp for a test drive — it delivers a surmounting terror that’s hard to stop.

Amazing Bass Pedal

By Mark R. from MARS, PA
Music Background: Bassist and Rhythm Guitarist

I purchased the SH1 to bring more life to my bass and to give me more sonic control on stage. I plugged in to my Rumble amp and was immediately pleased with the shape and diversity of the sounds I could dial in with this pedal. I ran through each of the configurations in the manual before quickly ending up back at Steve Harris' personal settings. But playing this through an amp hardly shows the power of this pedal. I play bass for our praise band and immediately the sound guy was elated with the breadth and power of the sound I was delivering. Using this pedal as a DI box immediately jumped my passive Fender Jazz Bass from a part of the scene to the canvas that the rest of the band could play over. And importantly, I didn't need to roll my volume nobs up to 10 to push my sound to the board. A number of the other musicians and people in the congregation immediately noticed a difference as well. If you're looking for a pure emulator, this probably isn't what you're looking for. If you want to take your bass sound to the next level, and especially if you play live or through a PA, then this is a must have.

Best In Show!!

By Steve P. from Minneapolis
Music Background: most forms of metal and rock music

I have a few Tech 21 bass and guitar pedals. In my opinion, I think this one is my favorite and best sounding of all of'em! One of the best features this pedal has besides a great tone is the blend knob. If you already have a good sound going, you can blend this pedal in to compliment it even more.
Great!
Buy This!
I'm probably going to get a 2nd one.
It is that good!

Great pedal, love the tones

By james f. from Bonners Ferry, ID
Music Background: Pro

This is the second one I bought - I liked mine so much that I bought one for a buddy of mine. I tried all of the tones out of the manual but ultimately went with the Steve Harris settings.

I'm running a USA-made Fender P Bass into this pedal, then straight in to an Apogee Duet D/A converter and I'm very happy with the tones I'm tracking.

I know that amp modeling software has come a long way but my ears are still not convinced that it comes even close to outboard equipment and this unit is a really simple and compact way to get some killer, big tones.

Bonus that it's made in USA

Great sounds from a small footprint

By Chad M. from Houston
Music Background: Semi-pro for over 30 years

This unit does not have presets. Channel 2 has the same eq settings as channel 1 but allows you to boost or cut the volume and gain. If you need to change tones frequently, this isn't the pedal for you. I have a 99 Stingray, a 2020 Thunderbird and an 05 Dean. They all sound different but great through it. Their personalities really come through. Play around with the example settings to get a feel for it and then tweak it to make your own. Its a great piece of equipment if you take the time to understand it and learn it. It's not going to make you sound like Steve Harris unless you have the chops!

Best, Most Simple Pre-Amp I've ever used.

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Bass/Guitar Player

This pedal is surprisingly small. But wow does it sound good. This is not just for rock bass, you can dial in a great jazz sound, pop, slap, you name it, it can dial it in. Here is what I like. It's simple. If your running it into your amp, just set your amp eq to flat, then set your amp gain to low and volume to where you need it. I then set channel one for my mellow/less drive channel and set the eq where I want it. The EQ on this thing is allows for wild swings in tone. Then I set Channel 2 to my drive channel with more gain and grit. I don't turn on the speaker emulation unless I go straight into the board. The bite button is a personal choice, it's more a rock or slap type effect on the eq, so I don't tend to use it much. It sounds amazing. Just two channel and tuner. Just what I needed. Super small for travel. I don't play with any other effects so if that's how you play I'd recommend it. For bass pedal fans you have a pedal board , you could add Compression Pedal and maybe a Chorus and call it a day.

Excellent

By Gabe O. from Hazleton, Pa
Music Background: Bass guitar Player for a Local cover band called Livin’ The Dream

Excellent pedal what Steve Harris did to make his sound in one little box and there's a few more presets to turn them on to sound like other bass players which is amazing and you could customize your own sound probably one of the best pedals by far! And I want to throw a shout out to Patrick Lantz he pointed me the right way and if you guys ever need a sales person Patrick is the guy to go to he knows his stuff! And I'm putting a picture up of my two favorite petals that I can't live without now check out the Digitech drop too

Very versatile pedal

By Greg L. from Sky Valley Ca
Music Background: Semi Pro Bassist

I bought this pedal because of Tim Starace's demos, and it does all that and more. I am one person that is happy that the sounds demoed are sample settings and not presets. I started with the "Geezer"setting and dailed in an absolutely gloriously filthy sound that might make Gene Simmons blush. It scared my bandmates so bad that both guitar players bought new Mesa Triple Crown amps to try to overcome their sonic insecurity. True story.
This unit has replaced my older SansAmp for my home practice set up. Having a built in tuner is a big plus. You really can dail in just about ANY bass tone you can think of.
I can imagine using it as a Fly Rig in a couple of the local clubs, but I have not actually tried it. My older one worked great with the XLR going straight to the house, I like the tone of this one better.
Another nice feature is having two "channels". You can set up two different gain-volume stuctures for loud, louder, or mellow, loud.
Get one.

Fat punchy direct bass tones!

By 70s p.
Music Background: Recording, teaching, gigging, songwriting, guitar, vocals, bass

I'm a home studio enthusiast. I've recorded direct with other products and I've miked bass amps. The SH1 really gets bass tone right. I can get fat, punchy tone with deep, full low end but no mud or boominess, that sits right in a mix, without the extra time involved in miking up my bass amp. It doesn't have an onboard compressor, but I haven't found it necessary to use one. The output is pretty consistent. All the effects in the world won't fix a poor foundational bass tone. The SH1 captures the tones of a high end bass rig without a lot of complication and time setting up mics and other stuff.

Killer SansAmp!!

By Scott J. from Columbus, Ohio
Music Background: Guitarist/Bassist, Still Life:The Iron Maiden Tribute

This is a fantastic sounding pedal, thanks to the specific frequencies it can boost or cut. Not only does it nail the Steve Harris sound, but several other iconic bass tones as well! Despite it's small size, this thing is a beast and very well built. The XLR/Speaker/Bite buttons feel solid when pushed, not weak and cheap feeling. The actuator buttons are quiet and smooth.Speaking of quiet, even at high gain, this thing stays pretty quiet. The knobs feel rubberized and are super sensitive, meaning there is a great deal of range to shape your tone however you would like. Nice that it has a 2nd channel to switch gain/volume for songs that call for it. Another really cool feature is the on board tuner. It works really well, not twitchy at all, and is spot on accurate! I have yet to try out the XLR with my band, Still Life:The Iron Maiden Tribute, but I have no doubts based on the quality Tech 21 has put into making this. I definitely intend to buy another soon so I'll have it when i wear this one out years down the road, lolz!! Up Them Irons!!

Awesome Pedal

By Adam from Arizona
Music Background: Low end lover

I bought this thing because I love my sans amp and I love Iron Maiden. I have two Bass heads I use when I gig out. I use a dark glass micro tubes 900 bass head and I add little distortion. I use a fender Superbassman 100 as my main bass head which I love the sound but it’s heavy as hell to lug around. So I just use the dark glass head for the 900 watts to push my cabs and I use the Steve Harris sans amp to get my sound and it sounds like a tube head and easy to dial in a sound. I love with my jazz bass with the pedal. It’s a bit more tricky at least for me to dial in my active basses. The tuner works well. It can only boost or cut the second Chanel’s volume and gain but other than that I’m liking it so far.

Beast in a box

By Sweetwater Customer from Sunny Florida
Music Background: Musician for 40 yrs. I gig every weekend.

I'm not good at reviews, this is what I liked and disliked about the Steve Harris sh1 pedal. Huge maiden fan , so I had to get this pedal. I was under the impression that his tone n a few others were programmed into the pedal. It's not ,My mistake.
Pros for me..tuner...great! , multiple plug in options , plenty of tone options
Cons for me.. Not programmable , pedal is very small.. Knobs are hard to see on the floor, just plain too small , price... For me I need more out of this pedal... I have the geddy lee pedal which I dig.

Awesomeness!

By Jovan T. from Michigan
Music Background: Experienced Bassist

This pedal is awesome. I'm a huge Maiden fan, and I have the Steve Harris P Bass strung with his signature Rotosound flats and this pedal completes it all. Absolutely nails Steve's sound. The only other sample setting I've tried so far is the Geezer and it was pretty cool too. Tech 21 nailed it again! If you're a Maiden fan and want Steve's true sound, you gotta get this pedal.

Great tone but falls short of being fantastic!

By Russ P. from Port St Lucie, Fl

I haven't been able to really put it through a true acid test but the two channel format falls short with only one bank of tone controls. This is not a cheap stomp box... it's on the high end of tonal dollars. The only thing to enhance the second channel is volume and gain so basically it's a one channel processor with 2 boost features. Does it sound good...yes it does, just falls short of being fantastic. I have a collection of Tech 21 pedals and my Sans Amp Bass Driver is close to 30 years old and still a mainstay for my sound. I feel the bottom line was more important than true function. Would I buy it again...hard telling. I'm looking forward to see how it sounds live in the mix and will give a update.

Great tones.

By Charlie M. from Wellsburg, WV
Music Background: Amateur bass player

Great pedal, it will make you sound like Steve Harris, but will not help you play like him. I also own the Dug Pinnick pedal and the bass fly rig. Both of those have a headphone boost which make them great practice tools. The Steve Harris pedal does not have a headphone boost and the output is mono. That is why I am giving four stars. I am running through my little Harbinger 5 channel mixer and using headphones and that makes it much better through headphones. It does state in the manual the headphone output would not be super loud.
From the manual:
"Using the SHI with headphones. The SHI will drive average/full coverage headphones approx. (32 Ohms), preferably with a 1/4" mono to 3.5mm stereo adapter plug. It won't be super loud, but it works for silent practice."

That is kind of a bummer, but not a deal breaker fir me.
