Gibson Custom 1964 SG Standard Reissue with Maestro Vibrola Electric Guitar - Murphy Lab Ultra Light Aged Pelham Blue Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Mahogany Body and Neck, Rosewood Fingerboard, 2 Humbucking Pickups, and Vibrato Tailpiece - Pelham Blue

Gibson’s SG is an undisputed rock icon. Immortalized by Santana at Woodstock and brutalized onstage by Pete Townshend, the venerable SG has seen its share of front-line action. The 1964 SG Standard, in particular, has been seen in the capable hands of guitar greats such as Eric Clapton and George Harrison. Everything seemed to come together for the SG in that model year. In their wisdom, Gibson reverted back to the beloved girthy neck shape of late-’50s Les Pauls and replaced the cumbersome side-pull vibrato with the smooth and reliable Maestro Vibrola tailpiece. Today, the SG aficionados at Sweetwater are excited to present to you the Gibson Custom 1964 SG Standard Reissue Ultra-Light Aged. This masterful rendition of the classic solidbody electric guitar that rocked the music world in its most influential decade celebrates its coveted progenitors in a gorgeous re-creation handcrafted by Gibson’s Custom Shop luthiers with fastidious attention to prototypical detail, top-shelf tonewoods, and a scrumptious Murphy Lab-aged finish that gives you the look and feel of a cherished vintage treasure.

Incredible

Nothing to fault other than it's expensive. A stunner sonically and visually, very fun to play, so much tone and vibe.

It's Really, Really Good!

I've always wanted a guitar that felt simultaneously new and vintage right out of the case. New in that it's not rife with vintage issues and trips to the luthier, vintage in that it feels like an old friend right away (like my 20+ year old Les Paul Custom that I've worn myself over the years).

The Ultra Light aging on this guitar is perfect - it looks slightly antique with "cracking" on the lacquer all over the guitar (like Suhr Antique Models) but doesn't have purposeful signs of artificial road wear. What you get at the Ultra Light level from the Murphy Lab is a guitar that looks, feels, and plays like its been around for a while, but also feels fresh and exciting. The patina on the hardware is excellent looking, and it actually makes me more comfortable playing it - I always sorta annoyed myself trying to keep smudges and prints off of shiny hardware. No worries here. It looks awesome in person.

The tuning stability and playability are really great right out of the box. All I had to do was lower the string action just a slight bit, and everything was perfect. The pickups sound great, the 3 way switch and pots actually SHAPE TONE! This isn't plug and play electronics, this is a real sonic tool.

I really had a hard time deciding on this due to the cost and wondering if it was going to be worth it. I've always wanted a Pelham SG with Vibrola...and when these came out I was instantly both excited and concerned about the pricing v quality. I have definitely played some Gibsons that just simply were not up to par quality v price.

But - I'm here to tell you that this particular iteration of the Murphy Lab SG is worth every cent. Superior quality custom shop craftsmanship here. I would say that going up to the next levels of aging might be a little much for me - this seems perfect - but if you are into more purposeful wear and have the extra cash...by all means. You'll get a great instrument.

As always, I'm super happy I chose Sweetwater for this significant purchase, as they took care of business (no surprise there)! Thanks to my engineer Dustin Keesbury for helping out with this and getting is safely to its new home.

All in all, if you are in the market for something like this, I would say it's well worth it - so get off that fence and start enjoying yourself!
