Don't be fooled by the price, this one is all Gibson.

By Tim K. from Seattle, Wa.

My SGJ arrived today via Fed-Ex. It arrived in very good shape, no issues at all other than a little setup necessary to make it play to my tastes which is to be expected. A little tuning and away we went on our first journey. And a great first journey its been. (My fingers are telling me its time to put it down now...4 hours later)

This is a Gibson there is no question about it. The neck is a perfect fit for me, nice and fat but thin too if that makes sense. And its fast, oh man is it fast. This guitar is a player, its one that will be with me for a long time to come. I may get it a little hotter pickup in the bridge at some later date but for now this one will suffice admirably.

It is the best "cheap" (in price only) guitar on the market and its a made in America Gibson, well worth the price. Thank you Sweetwater AND Jay, you guys are awesome. Customer service is first and foremost with you guys and that is very plain to see and all I can say is that it is greatly appreciated.

You have made a lifelong customer. Thanks again.

Hey you! Yeah you, the dude reading this review let me tell you something. If you are wondering whether you should grab one of these from Sweetwater quit wondering and do it, you will be happy you did, especially at that PRICE.

Gibson SGJ (Rubbed Satin)

By Travis from Milton, WV USA
Music Background: 16 years of playing guitar.

Received the guitar today. Looks great, sounds awesome. I love the bare bones appearance. The rubbed finish is great, especially on the neck. Makes it very comfortable to play. It was set up great right out of the box, just needed a slight tuning.

Customer service, as always, has been amazing. Thinking about getting an LPJ in the future because of this SG.

Every bit a Gibson, the feel, sound, and playability. Has become my favorite in a stable of 8. For those of us who don't have deep pockets and would like to experience quality, I recommend this axe.

Gibson SGJ

By Michael A. from Cambridge, MA, USA
Music Background: Non-pro musician

The SGJ exceeds expectations. If you're a fan of the lean-and-mean look of this guitar, bare stained wood, no binding or bells and whistles, then you're gonna love it, 'cause it's even better in real life than in photos. The neck is slightly thicker yet narrower than the standard modern Les Paul neck, unlacquered, and makes for lightning-fast playing. Body is about half the weight of a LP. Excellent balance between neck and body. Unlike the LP, it's easy to play while sitting down or on the couch!

Let's talk tone. At maximum gain through a 50-watt Marshall combo, you get the infamous SG snarly dog bite that we've come to know and love. Personally, with distortion I like the neck pickup better than the bridge, but both are sweet. (Both pups on was, oddly, my least favorite sound.) Played clean, you can get beautiful, singing, bell-like tones verging on Fender-esque, especially with the bridge pup.

You've probably read other reviews talking about how the guitar was perfectly set up, in tune and ready to play right out of the box, even after being shipped. It's true; mine was. The extensive quality check that the instruments go through is evident at first play.

Final note about my experience as a customer: I can say that Sweetwater deserve all the good words that folks say about them. I want to give a special thanks to the rep who handled my order, Paul Rowan. Not only did he call me immediately after I placed it just to make sure everything was correct, he followed up via email to let me know what was happening every step of the way--even sent photos of the guitar from the website (since they would be taken down after purchase). THIS IS A LEVEL OF CUSTOMER CARE AND ATTENTIVENESS THAT HAS ALMOST DISAPPEARED. Do yourself a favor: buy from Sweetwater. You'll be glad you did.

Sludge Machine

By Spenser from Manchester, NH USA
Music Background: 10 year Hobbyist

I was hesitant to buy the guitar at first due to the low price and the fact that there were none in any stores near me to try, but I'm glad I did. I got the guitar solely to tune low and play slow and it holds up far beyond my expectations. It's a bit brighter than other SG's that I've played so fattening up the bottom end of the amp and using both pickups in tandem makes it roar. I'm playing through a Peavey Valveking 100w head with 6L6s in it and restrung it with D'addario 11's, barely had to adjust anything when I changed the strings. There weren't any video reviews that played anything but clean tones and classic rock so I'll probably be making one to put on Youtube.
