PRS SE P50E Parlor Acoustic-electric Guitar - Black Gold Reviews

Acoustic-electric Guitar with Spruce Top, Maple Back and Sides, Mahogany Neck, and Ebony Fingerboard - Black Gold

Parlor guitars don’t have to be puny, and PRS has proved that once again with the SE P50 Parlor! From head to toe, this acoustic-electric guitar delivers solid volume, projection, and performance while maintaining a small travel-friendly profile. The SE P50 features hand-selected tonewoods including a Sitka spruce top and figured maple back and sides. Maple and Sitka spruce not only look great, but they also offer full and snappy tone that’s quick to respond — this combination shows up on a number of Sweetwater’s favorite small-bodied guitars! Great woods are further enhanced with innovative PRS hybrid “X”/classical bracing and top-notch hardware including a bone nut, an ebony bridge, and PRS-designed tuners that all naturally enhance the P50’s sonic profile. Add in an onboard Sonitone pickup for plugging in and the result is reliable parlor that’s ready for the stage or studio, but works just as well as a living room or a travel guitar!

Forget the low overall rating

By Jim from Wylie, Texas on December 11, 2023 Music Background: Every day player for 50 years

After playing my PRS SE P50E for a few months I am really glad that I did not let any previous reviews turn me off of my purchase. This is a beautiful, perfectly balanced Parlor. It is no toy sized pretender. It is the one that I tend to keep with me because it is so light, portable and dependable. I play it every day just because it sounds so nice and the tone is always mellow, expressive and rewarding right out of the case. It is absolutely my favorite for pick-up finger style - especially when someone says, "Oh you play guitar. How about playing us something". Once out of the case, I get a lot of compliments about the looks, which are a lot fancier than the price point might suggest. PRS knows how to make a great guitar. The depth of their craftsmanship really shows in this P50E. Everything that PRS puts into this acoustic electric just flat works. I love the neck and finish for its playability and resonance. I did add a set up, with Elixir Custom Light strings and TUSQ bridge pins. Mad props as always to my epic Sales Advisor Mitch Dazey. He made me a great deal on top of this item's already considerable mark down on the Sweetwater website. Don't be shy about telling Mitch that you don't have a lot to spend. He understands. And even better, Sweetwater recently added a very reasonably priced certified fit Gator case recommendation that got me a hardbody case for less than half the price of the alternative certified fit they had previously shown for this guitar. Note that this guitar comes with a PRS SE gig bag, which is well made and fine if that fits your needs. I added a photo of the Gator case, even though it is not included with the P50E unless you choose to purchase it as well. I am really glad that I bought it. It is well made and a spot on fit for this parlor guitar.

Awesome Guitar

By Erique on February 20, 2023

This guitar is exactly what I expected it to be. It is very playable, sounds great, and is overall an amazing guitar. Only downsides are the bridge pins and in a bad place and are hard to get out. The neck isn't the thinnest, but that is all preference. I mostly play a very thin neck electric and it is just a little bit bigger but of course that's just me.

Overall would recommend for someone who wants a parlor. I love it and have played it a ton already.

Bridge pins

By Sweetwater Customer on November 17, 2022

This is the first parlor guitar that I've owned and must say that I am not dissatisfied . The neck is a bit fatter than I am use to but manageable.
The only real issue I encountered was when I changed strings. The bridge pins are very round and recessed down in the bridge and getting a string winder pin puller between the bridge and bottom of the pin is impossible. I had to push the pins up from the inside of the guitar. Not as easy as other brands
maybe not a deal breaker just frustrating.

Returned two defective P50s

By Brian P from Colorado on July 3, 2023

First off, the Sweetwater buying experience was second to none. I've bought guitars and ukuleles from the big box music stores as well as small boutique shops and the quality of customer service for Sweetwater beat them all. It will be my first stop from now on.
I ordered this PRS P50E and it shipped and arrived very promptly. It looked pretty nice and sounded okay. But on the third day it developed a buzzing noise in the head. This turned out to be something loose in a tuning machine. A small piece of something rattling around in the casing. These are PRS's own tuners. Sweetwater gave me the choice of repairing, replacing or returning. I choose to replace. They didn't have any in stock but had some going through inspection. Buy the next day they had one for me and shipped it out priority.
Receive it the next day and shipped the first one back although they said I had two weeks to do that.
The second one arrived in good shape with it's 55 point inspection card (and a bag of candy). Unfortunately upon checking it out the sound hole control panel fell right off as soon as I touched it. They glue the panel to the top and for some reason the glue just didn't adhere properly and it just let go.
I could have glued this on myself but after receiving two out of two defective guitars I soured on this P50 and the factory it's coming out of. I don't blame Sweetwater techs at all as both issues occurred after their inspection.
So I requested a return and I am sending the second one back as well.
Besides the defects it's a pretty guitar and had a nice fit and finish for the price with a lot of eye candy. I was a little nervous about the maple body and I did feel it to sounded quite boxy But that can be hard to avoid in a small guitar. If I had received a non-defective unit I could have lived with the tone quality for the price.
Both were setup well and were pretty easy to play and the pickup sounds decent.
If you manage to get a good one you'll probably be happy with it as long as you know what kind of tone to expect from it.
