PRS SE Mark Holcomb Signature Electric Guitar - Holcomb Blue Burst Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Mahogany Body, Maple Top, Maple Veneer, Maple Neck, Ebony Fingerboard, and 2 Humbucking Pickups - Holcomb Blue Burst

Boasting a pair of revamped Seymour Duncan pickups, the PRS SE Mark Holcomb delivers the crushing high-gain tones, pristine cleans, and effortless playability that modern prog metal players have come to require from their 6-strings. This guitar starts off with the classic PRS tonewood combination of maple-capped mahogany, but the top of the SE Mark Holcomb is upgraded even further with a violin carve and quilted maple veneer that’s sure to capture your audience’s attention. On the opposite end, Mark opted for a maple neck with a PRS Wide Thin neck profile: this slightly skinnier shape has a smooth, fast feel to facilitate all manner of fleet-fingered metal technicality. Finally, this iteration of the PRS SE Mark Holcomb marks the introduction of Seymour Duncan’s Scarlet and Scourge humbucking pickups, specifically voiced to retain extreme clarity and maximize the tonal output of any modeling amplifier.

Beautiful and it plays really well!!!

By Nick from Minnesota on April 24, 2024 Music Background: 20+ years non professional

I had been looking at PRS guitars for months. I'm unfortunately not in a position to play them easily since the closest dealer is a 3.5 hour drive from me, so I usually buy guitars online and rely on reviews to get a good instrument. I watched YouTube videos and read reviews, I decided on this guitar even after mixed perception. I wanted a versatile (do it all) guitar but geared mostly toward metal.
So far, I'm very happy with the Holcomb it plays very easily (I had to straighten the truss rod) but I have it in standard tuning vs drop C it was shipped in.
If fits very nicely as an addition to the strat and LP style guitars that I own. I also have a schecter omen extreme 6 which it will replace.
I'm not a professional musician, but have been playing for over 20 years.
So far I've had 0 tunning stability issues that are mentioned in other reviews
I was worried a little about the fretboard radius being so flat compared to any other guitar I've had, but it has not been an issue for me, i noticed the difference in neck carve more than the fretboard
I'm 100% satisfied with it… it sounds great plays great, excellent sustain, and it absolutely beautiful.

Very happy

I am new at learning to play guitar and started out with a $ Epiphone to see if it was something I would like. After playing for about a year and having difficulties with the neck never getting close to straight I figured it was time to invest in something a little better. I ordered this guitar realizing it would take a few months to receive it however I saw they had a demo model after a month or two of waiting. So after some hesitation I decided to go for it. Cannot be more pleased with it. Much easier to play than the Epiphone I was using. Tones sound good and the flatter radius is easier for me to play. Ashe was very helpful with the questions and concerns I had with getting a demo model. Overall very happy. Am also happy that I decided to get the full guitar setup. Saves me some time and aggravation of doing it myself. Overall very happy and would recommend.

Ok, I had to have it...

I saw this newer version in blueburst and had to have it.The blueburst is so Amazing, the pickups have tone for days, and typical silly good playability, are what sets this badboy apart from other guitars at this value point It Looks, plays and feels like a Core PRS Model at 1/3 the price point. the fit and finish are astonishing. set up out of the box was spot on. I played everything I could think of on this from Metal riffs to blues to country and even chicken picking and it all sounded amazing! Maniacs, here is a piece of advice, go back and click the "add to Cart" button now and get your bad self one of these now! I know I would! My sales Rep, Ed Nystrom, rocks!

PRS Mark Holcomb SE

This guitar is pretty awesome. The best guitar I have owned. The only thing is the nut. It's cheap plastic.. They should do better. A new nut is $.. And makes a world of difference. This guitar is just so nice. The new Seymour Duncan pickups are fantastic.

Tuning

By Tim from GA on June 28, 2023

Just got this beat in & excited to check it out....Noticed it shipped in standard tuning, thought it was Drop C from the factory - Just curious if anyone else has seen that, didn't want to have to tweak intonation and all. Thanks.

Good, but could be better!!!

I purchased this guitar as a return from Sweetwater about 2 weeks ago. Guitar came fast. Sweetwater is awesome as always. Anytime I get a prs se guitar I always add locking tuners and strap locks. The guitar plays and sounds great. I have the older holcomb se when they were still made in Korea. I liked it so much I sold my 2016 McCarty. I was apprehensive about the new pickups, but they are great.
Heres where the couple issues I have with the guitar come in. First, the truss rod cover does not sit flat. There are also YouTube videos talking about this issue. There is a gouge in the bass side binding which led to me to discover the fret edges on frets 15-20 protrude out past the binding. Not the end of the world.
It's kinda crazy that for almost $ there would be quality issues like this on a guitar. I have 0 complaints about Sweetwater, but PRS really needs to get their crap together.

This guitar should be so much better

By John Rabenda from Joliet, IL on February 7, 2024 Music Background: Professional Musician

This guitar annoys me so much. It has so much potential to be great. The nut issue on both these models is awful. For whatever reason they are the worst on any PRS SE I've ever purchased or played. Tuning is rough on these guitars. On the last version of this guitar (grey purple burst) I swapped the tuners, nut, output jack, and pots to get it right. Afterwards it was great for $ more. I own 8 from the SE line and 6 core models from PRS. I will say it is the best sounding guitar in the SE line I've personally played. If you have the ability or the time to upgrade and then you'll be happy later. Just not out of the box. It's so frustrating cause I thought these new models would address the issues. Especially for the price increase from the previous version.

Great sounding guitar, bad quality finish/hardware

By Jt Perez on September 26, 2023

First off saying none of this is Sweetwater's fault.
The guitar was handed to me in perfect condition, couple weeks later it seemed to start "degrading" itself. The finish on top and headstock started to chip/peel off way to easily even from wiping it down.
Secondly, the nut(tuning) If you've ever own a MH Se you know this common issue. For the price they should have fixed it!
Lastly the binding on the fretboard. It's a white binding that seems to attract any amount of dirt and scuffs way to easily. If you play with rings on I highly suggest not to!
Great sounding guitar, the Alpha and omegas were better imo in my sound test, but definitely not worth the extra money for a new finish and pickups.
Prs do better.
