PRS SE Mark Holcomb SVN Signature 7-string Electric Guitar - Holcomb Blue Burst Reviews

7-string Solidbody Electric Guitar with Mahogany Body, Maple Top, Maple Veneer, Maple Neck, Ebony Fingerboard, and 2 Humbucking Pickups - Holcomb Blue Burst

Boasting a pair of revamped Seymour Duncan pickups, the PRS SE Mark Holcomb SVN delivers the crushing high-gain tones, pristine cleans, and effortless playability that modern prog metal players have come to require from their 7-strings. This guitar starts off with the classic PRS tonewood combination of maple-capped mahogany, but the top of the SE Mark Holcomb SVN is upgraded even further with a violin carve and quilted maple veneer that’s sure to capture your audience’s attention. On the opposite end, Mark opted for a maple neck with a PRS Wide Thin neck profile: this slightly skinnier shape has a smooth, fast feel to facilitate all manner of fleet-fingered metal technicality. Finally, this iteration of the PRS SE Mark Holcomb SVN marks the introduction of Seymour Duncan’s Scarlet and Scourge humbucking pickups, specifically voiced to retain extreme clarity and maximize the tonal output of any modeling amplifier.

Good Seven String with Ok Factory Pickups

By Shaun from Illinois on November 10, 2023 Music Background: Used to play in a band

Being a big fan of Periphery, I definitely knew that I wanted to check out this guitar. I also own an older 6 string version with the alpha & omega pickups, so I will use that as a comparison when reviewing this guitar. The asthetic is similar to the original, however with a grey and blue burst instead of the grey and purple of the original holcomb. The main difference with this guitar is the pickups. To be completely honest, the alpha/omega set is much better than the scarlet/scourge set. The pickups in this guitar sound great for clean and mid gain tones, but for high gain, it always left me feeling like I wanted more. It can do metal, but I guess that's the price to pay for wanting more versatility and lower output. I swapped the stock pickups out for BKP aftermaths and couldn't be happier. Chugs for days on the bridge pickup, and the alnico neck pickup does all the good clean sounds. Fun fact that I didn't know about until opening up the control cavity to swap pickups is that these guitars come with a treble bleed circuit from the factory. Not sure if I like or dislike it at this point, but just wanted to point that out. Also one potentially negative thing about this guitar is the neck is on the thicker side for a 7 string. Not quite as thick as those old school 2000 era Schecter 7 string necks, but not that far off. So if you are used to playing Ibanez 7 string wizard necks, you would not like this guitar's neck. Otherwise though this is an excellent guitar. It does metal and can do pretty much anything else too.
