PRS SE Custom 24 Electric Guitar - Black Gold Sunburst Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Mahogany Body, Maple Top, Maple Neck, Rosewood Fretboard, 2 Humbucking Pickups, and Tremolo - Black Gold Sunburst

The Paul Reed Smith SE Custom 24 solidbody electric guitar puts the sound, playability, and gorgeous looks of the Custom line into a more affordable instrument. The PRS SE Custom 24's mahogany body and maple top now feature a more traditional "violin" body carve that gives it the feel of top-level Custom 24 guitars. A pair of 85/15 "S" pickups delivers a wealth of superb humbucking or single-coil tones. Its maple neck features a Wide Thin shape for comfortably fast playability, and the rosewood fretboard is adorned with old-school Birds inlays for that iconic PRS look. This guitar is a true PRS through and through, as well as being a great value — you don't have to be a touring rock star to enjoy the PRS SE Custom 24's exceptional tone and playability.

Best cost/benefit

By Renato Brasil on April 15, 2024 Music Background: Rock, pop, hard Rock, heavy metal, gospel music, soul

Sounds great! Really great! I am a strat guy, the neck is large for me, but it's not uncomfortable. You can split the humbuckers, and it gives more tonal possibilities.

VERY GOOD GUITAR

By Ryan from Ar on February 7, 2024

This is hands down the best guitar for the money, I have many guitars from all the top brands some five times the price and after owning this guitar for ten years I can tell you this is the best all around guitar out there! I'll also add that I never write reviews but feel this guitar deserves recognition.

My favorite PRS I've owned to date including Core models

By David from Texas on October 17, 2023 Music Background: Lead Church Guitarist, Session Guitarist for different churches, hobbyist, budding songwriter

So I play everything from Gospel to Modern Praise and Worship to Metal. This guitar does it all. I've been playing guitar since 1999, have owned everything from PRS Core models to Gibson Custom Shop Guitars. This guitar after a few hours of playing is my favorite so far. The 85/15S pickups are great, articulate, and the coil split doesn't have much volume drop off with a great tone. PRS really has stepped up the SE line. I've had several and this the best. The top as well is amazing. If the SE line had a 10 top range this would be one of then.

Shout out to Matt South for calling and checking in. You're the best.

My Best Guitar

By Sweetwater Customer on August 31, 2023 Music Background: Seasoned vet

I will keep this short - this guitar is my best guitar on many levels. I own or have owned a zillion guitars, expensive and not, but this guitar is simply the best guitar to play that I have ever owned.

My first PRS.

By Dale Waite from NEWFIELD, NY on March 16, 2023 Music Background: Play guitar for pleasure.

After watching at least 50 video assessments of the PRS custom 24 SE, I bought one. I can say with out hesitation this the first guitar that was actually near perfect "out of the box". I'm 79 and have some issues with my hands. I find this guitar the easiest I have ever played. I am able to play everyday from 1 to 2 hours. With all of my other guitars I only last 30 minutes to an hour and not everyday due to fatigue. I highly recommend this guitar as a great instrument for any player.

Incredible Guitar for the price!

By Jayson Whitehall from West Burlington, IA on February 6, 2023 Music Background: Bedroom Guitarist of a few years

Received my PRS SE Custom 24 today, and it came set up perfectly for E Standard! Great pickups, and of course if you're not a fan, you can always switch them out- but they sound great in my opinion! PRS did not disappoint with this one!

One of the best deals/choices on the planet.

By Vic from Central IL on January 6, 2023

I bought this guitar because even though I'm just learning guitar right now, I wanted something very high quality and versatility, but without making a huge investment at the same time... a "one and done", since guitar will not be my primary instrument. That's generally a very hard thing to do, because with quality, you usually also get price.

My (stellar) sales guy James Wroblewski immediately recommended this model, so I did the usual website and youtube video review research and was blown away by what you get with this guitar (as were pretty much all the reviewers). As long as you're not a strict paul or strat puritan, but want to at least get some very solid rock/country/funk tones, I can't recommend this guitar highly enough. The breadth of tones you can get with the coil splitting with the 3-way switch is amazing, even without the ability to individually control each pickup's volume.

Such a great guitar!

By jmabe from FL on August 24, 2022 Music Background: Enthusiast

I received this along with a Gibson Les Paul Modern within a couple days of each other. I enjoy playing both of them so much because both guitars make me a better player. The main difference? $. I would give this one 6 stars if I could. I did have Sweetwater replace the plastic nut with bone and set it up before sending it. Nice job as always, Matt Stockburger.

Black Gold, Texas Tea

By Mark from Sunshine State on August 17, 2022 Music Background: 40 years playing

Can I give this guitar 6 stars? Even with inflation, this guitar is a deal! Nicely packed; out of the box perfect. I bought this guitar for the Humbuckers, the fact that they split is a bonus. I don't hear much volume drop at all.

6 stars for Sweet Water too; Great place!

Perfect axe for me

By Brian Pettett from Chicago, IL on July 26, 2022

After struggling for years learning on a guitar that has been badly in need of fret work, I weighed the price of having that fixed - along with some other renovation work - against simply buying a new guitar. Small wonder which way that decision went; new gear is always gonna win out! Anyway, this SE was my reward for passing through to what I'd consider intermediate level; I just couldn't justify the extra cost of moving up to an S2 (for now!).

Immediately, it made a huge difference in my playing. The wide thin neck feels very fluid when moving through single-note runs, and made barre chords so much easier. The fit and finish are very good, and with the addition of locking tuners and some new PRS knobs it more than satisifies me from a "look" standpoint. Haven't played through my amp much yet, but it sounds much better than my old Strat standby..

I looked at many options before buying (local stores, Reverb, etc) but I'm glad I waited for Sweetwater to get these back in stock: you just can't do any better than the Guitar Gallery when choosing a new axe. Esp. with PRS; they're so individual in nature, that the ability to pick just the right top that speaks to you can't be overlooked. And it certainly doesn't hurt that they had my choice waiting in my office the very next day. Couldn't ask for a better experience, or a better tool to continue learning on...

PRS 24 standard

By Julio Larregoity on June 20, 2022 Music Background: Playing guitar since my chilhood

Recieved mine as soon as available. Very happy with this guitar. Covers all my needs and has sounds in the range of a Gibson and Stratocaster. So I sold 2 guitars , no more needed. Very versatile and a breeze to play and here. Its a keeper...

Sweetwater has spoiled me

By Gustavo Alvarez-Boanerges from DANSVILLE, NY on April 1, 2022

My sweet Solstice arrived in a super secured double box. Protected from vibrations from the shipping, and my guitar even arrived tuned. I got somecandy in there with my order, which the kid enjoyed. Needless to say, I am one happy customer!

Killer guitar

By Dave from Gasport ny on February 10, 2022 Music Background: 24 years

I originally bought a Gibson SG, but it had some issues, so i returned it and got a prs se custom 24 instead. This is my first time buying a PRS, and i can honestly say,out of the 19 guitar's i own, it came with the best setup. Most guitars have a high nut, and a fairly high action when you buy them. But right out of the box this guitar was perfect. I am officially a PRS fan now.

Now my main guitar

By John Binder from Amherst, OH on January 1, 2022 Music Background: Playing for about 45 years.

So I've been an Epiphone Les Paul Standard guy for a long time. Then I started seeing these PRS guitars pop up on line with both players and teachers. I tried the PRS Tremonti signature, PRS custom, and PRS custom SE. I eventually settled on the SE for its simplicity, playability and tone. The tremolo bar is very responsive, and the push/pull tone pot is perfect for songs with acoustic intros and high gain power chords. These guitars are great for soloing with nice highs and lasting sustain. The only con is that the volume pot is too close to the bridge pickup. I initially kept hitting it with my picking hand but quickly adjusted. With all that said, this PRS SE is now my main guitar.

PRS

PRS is one of the best guitars ever made.

Perfection!

By Sweetwater Customer on September 26, 2021

PRS is famous for it's designs which are traditional, sleek and created with the player in mind. They are also famously expensive. Here we have the SE line which is made to the exact specifications and with the same materials as their more expensive siblings. What makes them affordable is that they are made in Malaysia. I have never played a finer instrument. The neck is a nice C curve with a slightly wider fretboard. The pickups sound great and the hardware shines. It's just a great guitar.

PRS SE CUSTOM 24

By Greg on March 31, 2021 Music Background: Played bass for many years in a band and churches. Switching over to guitar now.

Really happy with this guitar. After a lot of research, and playing my friend's Strat and Les Paul guitars, I went with this guitar and am really glad I did. I also bought a Katana 50 MK2, which is an awesome little amp. I went through the learning curve with the guitar and amp and am loving all the different sounds I get out of this guitar. Humbuckers with coil split gives me a lot choices. Can't believe the quality for such a good price. It's beautiful and plays like a much more expensive guitar. Thank you to my sales rep, Nicholas Weaver, who has been a big help through this process.

MY 1ST PRS

I love this Guitar for so many reasons. Looks, Playability, Light Weight .My Bass player owns 2 Guitars and 1 Bass and I wanted one so I bought this and never looked back. Thanks

Sweet Playing Guitar

By Scott Berzin from Tarpon Springs, FL on February 24, 2022 Music Background: Experienced Rock Guitarist

The body and neck were fantastic. I sent it to our local luthier because the upper frets needed to be trimmed down a bit. It came back and it now plays better than any Gibson I have owned. The pickups are a bit muddy for me. Much deeper then I prefer. I will replace the bridge pickup with a PAF pickup soon. Once that is done this guitar will be a favorite of mine. I also replaced the tuners with SE Locking tuners for a bit more stability.

I purchased an SE Santana a few years ago and after the pickups were changed out it sounds fantastic.

I will purchase another PRS SE in the future, I believe these guitars are well worth the money paid for them. Much better quality than other imported guitar manufactures and also better than some U.S. made guitars that are double the price.

I only gave it 4 stars due to the work I had to put into it to play the way I like, but once adjusted this guitar is well worth the money paid. I actually prefer the SE models over the U.S. S2 Models.

Amazing Guitar

By Alex Ray from Washington, IL on November 30, 2021

This guitar is worth the money. You can't go wrong with picking one up. The only complaint I have is the guitar came with a little glue on the fret board when they installed the frets. It was on 3 of them, didn't affect the playability. Was able to get it off, with a little effort though.

PRS SE custom 24

By Mark from Vancouver, WA on March 9, 2021 Music Background: singer, player, songwriter.... Mark Ludes (spotify, you tube, iTunes)

Beautiful looking guitar. Love this in the 'Black Gold'.
Sounds good, has pretty strong hum bucking tones and the coil tap separates the coils to give you some variables - though I find for my use - I prefer the regular 3 way switch for tones...then using my amp and pedals to augment. The neck is described as wide-thin....? Do not particularly like the size as well as my Carvin or my older Gibson (the paul). It seems a bit 'fatter' than i had hoped.. The one big noticeable difference in this and my other guitars is that the fret bars are sitting up awfully high. You can really feel them when sliding across notes and changing frets. I wish they would have 'seeded' them deeper or filed them down... guess that's what you get when you do not buy the top of the line 'private stock' PRS models. This guitar was my test into the PRS world. I am more a Gibson / Carvin guy. It will be kept and played - but it will stay at 3rd choice for now.

Good guitar and easy to play

By John Allen from Dripping Springs, TX on October 26, 2022

This is a good guitar and easy for me to play. There is one issue with that might be a show stopper for some. I like to play with the lowest action possible without buzz. On this guitar there is a minor difference in the neck relief between the high and low side of the neck. This limits my ability to get buzz free notes on the G B and E strings around the 12th to 17th fret.

The hardware is also not great, the neck pickup kept moving out of position which I fixed with some lock tight and the input jack kept coming loose because there is no star washer installed. Fix this by adding a star washer.

Other than that to tone is great, and the finish is superb. The single/dual switch on the tone control also gives it a ton of versatility.

So bottom line is good guitar with one unfixable problem which may not be a problem from a lot of players.

Expensive fair guitar

By Mike from TX on June 13, 2023 Music Background: Experienced

Pros;
Most awesome and unique fret scale 25in
Beautiful aesthetics no doubt
No sharp frets !
Good woods

Cons;
Too expensive compared to other brands at this price point
Very but very poor tune stability
Never liked PRS tone pickups
Bad overall setup
Sticky back neck (need to sand it off)

Like to have;
Which they are available as hard tail option
highly probable wont buy another like this one, ever

Sweetwater stepped up!

By Chuck from St. Louis on April 9, 2023 Music Background: 34 years semi professionally

I've read that the guitars from PRS are ready to play out of the box. Not so much with this one. Too many issues. Sweetwater shipped this to me in December 2022. It was as if this was assembled at PRS and nothing more was done! The string height (The string height on my Acoustic was lower), intonation issues, nut issues and even the set screw for the Tremelo was almost backed all the way out! I contacted Joel and he assured me Sweetwater would do a complete Setup at no charge. I made the 6 hour trip from St. Louis to have this done. Not about to send this back to have it done. After having this finally setup at Sweetwater, this finally was how it was supposed be. This is why I only gave this guitar 1 star.

Poor qc

By Sweetwater Customer on February 16, 2023

Beautiful guitar. Sounds good. Too many qc issues though. I have received this guitar three times now and each has come with a major issue. Just received another replacement and the guitar has dead notes on the third fret.
