Great value, practical kit

Yamaha Hip Gig Compact Drum Set
This set is great for small gigs and practice. Sets up quick, same as tear down and a lot easier on your back. Birch toms sound surprisingly good. 13 inch snare has great sound. Bass drum with tinkering sounds satisfactory. If a small practice and gig kit is in your sights, this is a great choice.
Unbelievable kit for the price.
I originally bought a Ludwig Breakbeat Kit for sampling, scratch drums etc in a limited space studio. After about a year I decided to sell it and upgrade a bit (in price too) to this Yamaha Hip Kit. The difference is pretty hard to even compare. This kit feels professional in comparison - hardware, construction and tone. I'm very happy with the quality of this product, and it's TONS of fun to play. Bravo to Yamaha for making a quality kit of this level, and with this small of a footprint!
Here's a tip - slap an Aquarian Superkick 3 and a Regulator for the reso side and you'll get a real nice kick sound - surprisingly deep, full and punchy for a 20"x 8". No need to muffle anymore than that.

I haven't played in 10 years. I opted to purchase a new kit; something that wouldn't break the bank and maintain a small footprint. The kit looks great, sounds great and the small sizes encourage me to experiment with tunings to see just what the kit is capable of. Only problem is...I'm having so much fun relearning this instrument, I'm already interested in purchasing a full size kit!
Friggin’ Amazing for the price
I bought these as a substitute for my electronic drums and I love them! They sound great when I changed the heads and mic' d them up. Even people in the crowd were intrigued! Another great Yamaha product! I only wish the kick was 1" deeper! Great buy!
A Great Value and Very Portable
My original band is setting up a new rehearsal room where space is fairly limited. I have two professional Yamaha kits that were just a bit too big and wanted something I could leave at the rehearsal space without tying up my main kits. Enter this Stage Custom Hip kit.
This kit ships in a single box. Not a ton of assembly required - the 20" x 8" bass drum comes without the heads attached. The heads appear to be Remo Coated Ambassadors on the batter side and clear on the resonant side. The drums do well with higher pitches given the shallow depths and the included heads. My band does rock music and I needed something lower/punchier than these could achieve, so I went with Evans clear EC2 batters on the toms and then an EQ4 for the kick batter with a towel thrown in.
For the toms & kick, the sound is really good for the price & size with the aforementioned Evans heads! Love how compact the footprint is in the rehearsal space. My only complaint is the snare. It just has no punch at this size & shell composition, which is an expected compromise I suppose. So I'm going to use another snare that I have - a 13x7" brass Yamaha Recording Custom snare. Still compact but so much more depth/character. I'm thinking that a gigging jazz bop drummer would really love these with the stock heads & snare as shipped.
The 13" floor tom comes with snare wires. This is unfortunately useless for the tunings I use. This might be great with other music styles, but doesn't work for me. I removed the wires and unfortunately the hardware rattles without them. I appreciate why they included this though...
Fit & finish is really good for this price. The insides of the shells and bass drum hoops are not sealed with anything (e.g. polyurethane) and really aren't sufficiently sanded (I see wood grain parts sticking out). But again, I can't complain too much given the price.
Overall, if you find yourself needing a kit with these parameters, this is quite a nice value for the money.
