Expensive but Solid

By Jeff R. from Cameron Park, CA

I have On Stage stands for all my mics, but have unfortunately knocked them over more than once with vocal mics attached. When I upgraded to a Neumann U87, I did not want to risk that so I spent the extra bucks to get this bad boy. I am very impressed with the weight and how sturdy it is, and I feel like there is zero risk of me tripping and knocking this over along with the mic attached to it, which was my goal. I read some reviews online that said these newer Atlas stands are not like the older ones, but all I have to compare it to is On Stage stands, so it was a huge upgrade for me.

Cheap paint comes right off - very cheaply made

By Joshua L. from Nutley, NJ

These iconic stands are now inherently flawed. The washer at the fulcrum point of the handle that tightens the top bars position has a washer that grinds the cheap paint right off the stand. Upon the VERY FIRST TIME I used this new stand the paint just ripped right off the swivel fulcrum and fell to the floor. The old stands from the 50's that put this company on the map did not use paint and the metal was somehow dyed black. I know because I have some here in our studio to compare this one to. This cheap spray paint alternative is shameful and inherently flawed. Whoever thought, "hey we can just spray paint all the cheap hardware and no one will notice" was woefully mistaken. Furthermore the bar slips on the raw metal now and no matter how hard we tighten it, I can pull down on the top bar and it swings down (with a $30K Neumann U47 on it... nope!). So I have three questions: How on earth is this stand made so poorly? How did this design flaw pass QC? How did Atlas management think this was a good idea?

We will no longer be using Atlas stands in our commercial studio anymore and in our eyes, Atlas is no longer the standard. This is a MAJOR issue that needs to be addressed. I put this stand over a drum kit and didn't move it for a couple months. By the time I did and this happened, it was too late to return. I wish I could. It is a horrible product. Please see the attached image to see a hires close up of the issue I'm referring to.

A studio staple

By Rex H. from Bloomington, IN
Music Background: Playing bluegrass and dabbling in recording since 1962

I have a small home studio and managed to get one of these at an online auction for peanuts. They are large; true but they actually have a rather small footprint. If you have heavy microphones, they are indispensable.
I found myself with a little extra money so decided to buy another brand new one. There are a few minor changes Atlas made over the years such as oblong tightening knobs rather than round which I find a bit easier to use and hex screws to secure other parts like the counterweight which used to have hand tightened bolts that tend to break off. When I mentioned earlier about a small footprint, I found after assembling the new one and getting it into the studio, I actually was able to gain a little extra space.
I would have given the new one a full 5 stars but for the inadequate assembly instructions. Had I not had my old one apart for a thorough cleaning, I would have had a problem. I was also disappointed that these new ones are made in China.

Can't go wrong

By Rex H. from Bloomington, IN

I already owned a used older model of this same stand. It obviously had a lot of hard use but was still in great shape. This new one looks like it will stand the test of time as well. As big as they are, they really don't take up much room. Only reason I didn't give the new one the full 5 stars is because it's made in China.

Great, Solid Boom Stand

By Scott

I have been using cheap mic stands so long I didn't know what a good one looked like. What I find remarkable about this is the small footprint it has while still being rock-solid in use. I just bought a pair of ribbon mics and didn't want to have them dropping to the ground - this upgrade has made all the difference.

It's like getting a turtle for a pet...

By Robert S. from The Great State of Texas
Music Background: Studio Owner/Producer

You may have this the rest of your life. I have two that were from another studio. They are as good as when they were new. Still work and look great. Checking out lots of other brands and decided to stick with what's proven. Ordering several more along with PB15EB booms to replace the booms on some lesser quality stands around the studio. You can't go wrong with Atlas.

missing part

Great mic stand. It was missing a washer for one of the wheels. Replaced it myself. The assembly direction were not clear.

A Pro Stand

By Craig M. from Chatham, VA
Music Background: Recording, Live performance

Needed a boom stand for studio work. Looked at several lower priced stands, but decided to go for the SB36W. Definitely a heavy duty pro stand, all my other stands run and hide when this thing comes out. Easy to assemble, air cushioning helps with adjustments because the stand is heavy. Rollers are sturdy and work well, definitey need them with the weight of the stand. The boom really gives you a lot of reach. I use this stand with a Reflexion Filter. It works well, but need to add additional 10 pound counterweight to be able to fully extend boom with the Filter attached. Any less of a stand and you might have problems if you use a similar setup. My only dislike is the mic boom is in 2 sections and uses a coupling to connect the two parts, the coupling limits the distance that the boom can be retracted. Very happy that I spent a little more and got this stand.
