Electro-Harmonix Ripped Speaker Fuzz Pedal Reviews

Fuzz Effects Pedal with Volume, Tone, Rip, and Fuzz Controls

The Electro-Harmonix Ripped Speaker fuzz pedal places decades of coveted fuzz tones right at your feet. With its intuitive 4-knob design, the Ripped Speaker can go from the lo-fi distortion of the fuzz effect's origins to complete saturation with ease — all adjustable to your heart’s content via the Tone knob. Twist the Rip knob and bask in its splattery “dying battery” sound. You’ll also be impressed with how well the Ripped Speaker plays with a guitar’s volume controls — it's capable of dirt-tinged cleans when pulled back and explosive grit when ran wide open. The Ripped Speaker’s true bypass feature means it won’t muddy up your signal when it's disengaged, and the compact enclosure integrates into your pedalboard without the pains of rearranging. If you're aiming for a powerful all-in-one fuzz solution at a super-affordable price, the Electro-Harmonix Ripped Speaker fuzz pedal tears through the competition in its class.

Love This Pedal!!!

By Sweetwater Customer on July 26, 2022 Music Background: Only a few years

Bought this and I couldn't be happier. This pedal does everything from crazy weird tones to some nice classic fuzz. Whatever type of fuzz you need, this is your pedal. Keep the rip around 11:30 (I've found this feels less gated than 12:00) and mess with the volume and fuzz controls for some old school, Page/Hendrix/Whatever else you can possibly think of tones.

If you want only one dirt pedal, this could be it

By Aaron from Wisconsin on December 31, 2021 Music Background: Hobbyist

My first fuzz pedal, I bought because of the Rip (bias) control. Even with the Fuzz control all the way up all the time, this has sounds from light overdrive to almost Big Muff, controllable with the guitar's volume knob. With the Rip control between 9:30-11:30, it's a pretty normal fuzz. Over or under that, it does some neat gating things you can control with picking dynamics. If I had known how versatile it is, I would have bought it sooner.

Great pedal.

Not a fuzz pedal guy, but when I heard the demo of this I said what the heck. I haven't shut it off yet. Glad I bought it.

Fun Pedal

This pedal is fun to play with. On its own without the ripped speaker effect, it's an awesome fuzz pedal. Dialing in the ripped speaker just gives it an awesome dynamic. Think Jack White.

Rip it!

watched a review online, and this delivered. Everything from a plain fuzz, to destroyed and gated old school tones.

The Raconteurs’ Sound

By George Slafko from College Station on February 22, 2021

What a fantastic pedal from Electro Harmonix! If you have been searching for the Raconteurs' sound, this pedal is made for you!! I have been searching for this sound and again Electro Harmonix delivers. Quality as you would expect from this company. Paired with my Qtron+, I need only these 2 pedals to have the sound I need!!

This may be my new favorite dirt pedal. Fuzzy goodness

I was just GASing for a new fuzz pedal when Ehx announced this. I've always wanted one of those pedals that mimics going straight to console drive sounds and here comes the Ehx ripped speaker that does both! And for $99!?!?! Sign me up. I've never preordered a pedal before but was excited for this. And it does not disappoint. Nice warm fuzzy console overdrive, fuzz face, spitty gated fuzz and I would say it goes beyond a ripped speaker sound, to me I imagine this makes the sound of an exploded speaker with tubes dying super blown out sound. I can almost hear a rat type sound in here too. I love it. Wasn't expecting it to be so versatile. Just one of those pedals I knew right away it's a keeper. Where you take it right out of the box plug it in and click it on and don't need to touch the knobs. Ehx hit another home run here

Ripped speaker!

By Big John from San Diego on May 25, 2023 Music Background: Classical to Punk rock etc

The versatility is what attracted me. Not dissatisfied! Link Wray to 70's to 80' to Y2k! It has that ability! Classic Punk rock to surf to good nasty and dirty fun! It worked in great to my board. Will not disappoint! Hey yours now!

You KNOW what you're getting in to...

By Mark M. on October 21, 2021

Velcro, rip, tear. This thing sounds bad - and it's really good at it.

Granted the Ripped Speaker is not everyone's cup of joe (or whiskey or pop), but for those like me that love that destroyed a fuzzy, gritty tone there's nothing better.

I tried the Cuvave Fuzz pedal for the same velcro rip sound, but it was too thin and didn't allow the level of control of destruction of my tone that the Ripped Speaker provides. If you want the Ripped Speaker sound at a bargain basement price, look into that one.

Now if you're looking for a first fuzz or a more classic sound, I'm not sure you'll dig the Ripped Speaker. I see this as an ideal fit for those that have a standard tone they love but want to dirty it up a bit to get closer to the buzz the likes of Jack White use.

But for those that are looking to find a gnarled tone that sounds like you rolled your amp down a gravel hill and want to shape it a bit, you found your box.

Fun, tweakable fuzz

By Daniel on March 25, 2022

I wanted a simple fuzz with a bias control. And most of what I was considering were iterations of the classic Fuzz Face (2 transistor), like the JHS 3 Fuzz, and others like it. I do not know how many transistors this pedal uses, but that's not the point (at least not for me). What I wanted was to have a nice, smooth fuzz sometimes, with the option to do a nice ripping sound on occasion. There are a lot that can do that. But this one is a little bit different: With the bias control - labeled "Rip" at 12-o-clock, you get your smoothest sound. Rotate in either direction, and the sound starts to break up, or sometimes even cut your sustain if you rotate too far from noon. Clockwise, it seems to be more predictable like other bias fuzz knobs. Counter-clockwise, it seems to be a bit more chaotic. Not everyone will love the west side of the dial, but it's something I've grown to really like. My only beef about the "Rip" knob is that at hard CW or CCW, it seems to cut all sound entirely. Maybe that doesn't happen with different amps or guitars. Regardless, that's not a big concern.

I really like the Tone knob. It's much more responsive than most. You can get really aggressive bass tones, or you can get some nice crisp tones. With my strat, I like it at about 1:00.

It's not the fuzz for everyone. But if you're a tinkerer, and if you love bias controls, this is one you should check out. I'm very happy with my choice.

Not impressed, but...

By Jerry from Mishawaka, IN on April 4, 2021

My decision to purchase this was solely influenced by the demo EHX produced for it. That was a rookie mistake. Of course a company is going to make every effort to make sure their products are superior. There were no other demos of the Ripped Speaker to compare and my local GC didn't have them in stock to try out beforehand.

Sweetwater was out of stock too, so it took a couple of weeks to get one ordered/delivered. When I finally received it... I was unimpressed and disappointed.

The "Rip" knob is basically just a bias control. I guess it sort of emulates the sound of a ripped speaker, but I think it sounds more like a dying battery.

However, I have a Keeley modded TS9 I stack with this and it sounds absolutely amazing on my Strat's neck pickup! This is the only reason why I give it 3 stars.

Overall, this fuzz is pretty limited. I doubt I would've bought this if I had seen/heard a few other demos or tried one out for myself.

Not effective

By Sweetwater Customer on April 29, 2022

Honestly this doesnt seem to bad and the demo review video seemed alright, but when i put it to the test, it didnt even function properly with the 'RIP' knob and eventually the volume gave out as well and the bypass stopped working along with the whole thing. It obviously didn't work so i checked the inside and the chip and wires werent in-place; I returned it got the replacement, and almost instantly did i check inside to find that it was almost on par with the other one being as dirty or even more so. Honestly if you're reading this, dont buy it unless its SERIOUSLY your last option, to me it was just a waste of money.

Don't Believe The Hype.

By Max on April 11, 2021

I was completely underwhelmed by this pedal. After spending about 30 minutes trying to get a usable tone from various combinations of the "rip"(bias) and "fuzz" knobs, I decided to return it for a refund. The usable fuzz tone that this pedal does offer could be had from something like a Big Muff or a RAT. The choking and sputtering effects are too drastic and offer little in the way of useful sounds. I actually had to check my cables because I thought I had some that might have gone bad. The "rip" (bias) knob seems to only work between 3 and 9. Everything above or below those points cut out uncontrollably with little predictability.
I was hoping for something along the lines of the old Ibanez FZ7 fuzz "damage" section, but with more control/ versatility. While I can appreciate the value and aesthetic that a dying battery, bad tube,or damaged speaker can have in certain applications, I don't see the point of something that completely cuts the signal out. Perhaps if it had a wet/dry blend things could be more useful? Maybe the most disappointing pedal I ever bought.
