u-he Repro-1 & Repro-5 Plug-in Reviews

Virtual Monosynth Plug-in with 2 Oscillators, 4-pole Lowpass Filter, 2 LFOs, Arpeggiator, Sequencer, and Onboard FX - Mac/PC AAX, AU, NKS, VST2, VST3

Repro-1, u-he's blast-from-the-past analog monosynth plug-in, uses component-level modeling to deliver the mythical sonic essence of a rare, sought-after classic 1970s analog synth prototype. The tech used to create Repro-1 may be cutting-edge, but this soft synth's sonic credentials are unabashedly vintage. Whether you're crafting searing leads, behemoth basses, pulsing percussion, or spacey soundscapes, this 2-oscillator beast delivers fierce, raw, authentic sounds, dripping with juicy analog character. Patch from scratch or grab one of 500 killer presets. Take it from Sweetwater's hardcore synthesists: u-he Repro-1 is a highly playable workhorse synth you'll find yourself reaching for track after track.

I have always been adamant of virtual synths. The virtual synth market is flooded with gimmicks that throw the word "analog" around despite being functionally and sonically identical—if not, worse—to any other virtual synth. People often fall for this because of the desire to own a classic hardware synth, which is incredibly expensive.

But I must say, U-he has really set the standard. The only other set of developers I can think of that come near U-he's level is Sonic Projects with their OB-X emulation "OP-X Pro ll". Many comparisons online have shown that the sounds Repro 1 & 5 produce are indistinguishable from Sequential's hardware synths. The product goes above and beyond by allowing you to select different types of voice chip and filter emulations as well. It is a must have for any DAW user wanting to incorporate genuine analogue-style synths in their sound.

Not only is the emulation perfect, but the effects chain is amazing as well. It is one of the only virtual synths I know that allows per voice distortion. It also has a great array of stomp-box style saturation, delay, reverb, and dynamic effects.

You might see some reviews online complain about U-he's products and their heavy CPU usage. This usage comes as an expense of the extremely high quality emulations you get from their plugins. I found that by turning on multicore processing, my CPU usage percentage in Ableton (2018 MacBook Pro) dropped from 30% to around 18% while playing 6-8 voice chords.

Astonishing

u-He have never really delivered an average product, but this just is some next-level work. I've had the opportunity to use this head to head with a real ProOne and it holds its own (especially due to the extra effects and tweakability under the hood that you can't get from a real ProOne without a soldering iron). It is one of the most impressive virtual analog synths I've heard, period.

The upcoming poly version ("repro-5") looks to be even more amazing.

This is a must-have at this price, if you do any sort of electronic music.
