Generally good (as most of Yamaha products) - Depend on your intended use

By Giuseppe V. from Central Islip, NY

Not even closer to a regular piano action, nor piano key sizes, however is a solid, nicely made keyboard with all the interfaces that you might need, midi , usb, output to PA, headphones, pedal etc. Very solid and well made. Yamaha good quality (price not really cheap). If you aim for a piano with some degree of weighted keys, then there are other products in this price range , also from Yamaha that are pretty good. The intended use for me is "laziness", I have a piano upstairs, but many times I want just to try a couple of things while on the couch. That's absolutely great for this use. The are sounds are all around replicating the CP of the 80 and similar sounds, but I have found out (from Youtube) that if you want a "grand piano" sound, there is a little trick. Turn off the keyboard, then place the selector in the middle between the first and second position. It's bit tricky but with patience, it will stay there. Then turn the keyboard on, and ... magic ... A decent grand piano sound pops up. That's what I use all the time, and one of the major feature that encourage me to by this product. Frankly I don't know why this is working, and why Yamaha didn't just create a position for that (that's why 4 start). But it works for me, so I can spend time on the "piano" even staying on the couch.

Yamaha Reface CP

By Sweetwater Customer

This is a great small keyboard. You can use the settings or even play as a piano. The sound output isnt a lot but with a monitor or headphones it is great. So much fun to sit on the couch with headphones on and practice! We are in a motorhome with limited space so this has been perfect! I love it and highly recommend it. Sweetwater was also great to work with!

Beyond my expectations

By boomaga from knoxville

It does more than I expected it to do. I wish instead of a toy piano and bell sound they had opted to give us more variations on the Wurly and Rhodes sound, perhaps with a bit more idiosynchratic character. And the "secret" grand piano sound is really way too hard to access (turn the dial to the "middle" position while powering on) because there is no detente in the dial and it is very finicky. But it's a blast to play and the Delay sections are just so much fun to tweak.

Very Good for What It Is, But Could be More

By Mitchell T. from New Hampshire
Music Background: Keyboard and Guitars

The Reface CP has alot going for it—portability, excellent sounds, and the best mini keys I've laid my hands on. I also enjoy the small speakers that let you play it anywhere without having to hook it up to a computer or external speakers. And then when you do connect it, it is a perfectly fine keyboard controller unless you want to have lots of knobs. But for straight, portable, keyboard playing, the ReFace CP fills my needs. Also, by experimenting with the excellent effects you can have some additional fun. Why 4 star and not 5? I don't love all of the sounds. Mainly I've been using the Rhodes 2, the CP, and the Clav. As many have mentioned, the Toy Piano is much less useful than the hidden acoustic piano, and I find the Rhodes 1 underwhelming, the Wurli suitable. Ten years after its initial release, this is a classic of sorts, but the tech is undoubtedly available to offer a few more sound possibilities and a looper. I bought it knowing those shortcomings and I have no regrets. There is no better way to sit on your porch and dabble with a lightweight keyboard.

I Needed Some Solid Tones And This Has Them

By Austin H. from Taos, NM
Music Background: Classical guitar, House, Spacey Folk, Synths

I had been lamenting for a while how weak and uninspiring my VST piano sounds are. It was effecting my output because I never liked them in the mix, and I had uninspired piano lines as a result. The piano tones in the Reface have refueled my inspiration! I sit there and play for long periods of time, which I never did previously. I get lost in the two Rhodes and the CP tones. I have recently started tracking songs with it and it sounds gorgeous and rich in House music and Space Folk styles. I also perform with it in a rock band and it sounds good through the P.A. system. The CP tone is the standout tone for me, with the Rhodes tones being high quality emulations that get as close to a real Rhodes as anything that I have heard. I played a Rhodes for years in a previous band, and so have some reference there. I trigger it from a Korg OP6 for the larger keys and it has excellent velocity sensitivity. So fun to play. The effects do a good job of expanding the tonal qualities. The wah allows you to use it just as a filter so you can cut out some frequencies. The CP feels like butter with chorus and reverb. It's a great sounding piano and will stay relevant as long as people are making music.

Amazing little keyboard

By Vern O. from Ashland, OH

Overview:

I have a vintage Yamaha CP80 that has always been a ton of fun to play, and sounds unique. However, it takes up so much space (and is certainly NOT portable). While looking into some more compact alternatives, the reface CP came up. Somehow I completely missed the announcement of this product several years ago. I am seriously impressed with it. Build quality is great (it's hefty!) It sounds good, offers multiple vintage electric piano sounds, and the built-in effects are actually pretty decent!

The keys:

The key bed feels quite good, and I'd say they're the best mini keys I've ever used. My only complaint is with the way this thing handles velocity. It's hard to get more note volume without overdoing it. It would be nice if you could adjust the velocity curve somehow. Seems to exhibit the same behavior even through a MIDI controller.

MIDI:

While, I understand this is a compact unit, it is slightly disappointing that it doesn't feature full size, separate MIDI ports. The splitter dongle works perfectly fine, but still.

Line in:

It's nice to have a line input for the ability to play along with something else without needing a mixer. I just wish you could also feed it through the effects and adjust it's volume independently, but it's better than nothing!

Some minor gripes:

I would have liked to see the "hidden" grand piano sound as a dedicated option, but obviously this is an EP synth, so not a huge deal. Would also really like to have tone adjustments like on the real CP80 so you can alter the brightness. Lastly, it would have been nice if there was a dedicated transpose and fine tune adjustment rather than having to do it through keyboard combos and power cycling.

Speakers:

The built-in speakers are adequate for making music on the go, but they are always on unless you plug a headphone adapter in, or disable them with special commands (per the manual). Otherwise, they keep producing sound even if you've connected both line outs. The headphone adapter trick seems to be the simplest solution.

Final thoughts:

If you're looking for a compact, portable, "vintage electric piano", the Reface CP is a fantastic option. There is a lot packed into this for the price, and it offers a lot of sonic possibilities. There's no menu diving. All the effects and "preset" adjustments have their own dedicated knobs/switches. Best of all, it's FUN.

Great sounds, let down by 6AA batteries

By Will

Everyone knows the Reface is amazing. Everyone also hates that it lacks a rechargeable battery. Popping out 6AAs is a frequent and annoying feature when using this off of wall power. Just add an onboard USB C chargeable battery like so many similar devices!

if only Toy piano sound was a B3 :-)

By Adam S. from Arlington, VA

You can get a great variety of sound with the Drive and effects without any menu diving, but it would be a true desert island creative fun machine if the Toy piano was a growly organ instead... or another hidden addition like the acoustic piano (add tonewheel organ with a firmware update please Yamaha!!!)

Not a toy

By Sweetwater Customer

But just as much fun. The quality of this instrument is such that even wrong notes sound right. The keys are small and light but the touch response is great. It can be very expressive. There are only 7 sounds but there are 6 effects and they all are useful except maybe the toy piano sound but I really haven't explored that sound yet.

Fun little mobile box

By HG from Bellbrook OH
Music Background: Cover band keyboardist

This thing is a blast. Well beyond a toy and an excellent practice tool. Solid build that plays well on a table or your lap.

Sounds are very true to the originals. Wurly is my fav. Effects are quite good and authentic.

Keyboard is appropriately small and has great feel and playability. Don't be afraid to pound on it a bit to get the best sounds. Very touch sensitive.

Sustain pedal input is really well done and supports half pedaling.

I bought some rechargeable AA's and they last forever. Supposedly 5 hours, but I'm getting much more that that. I don't bother with the adapter because the batteries work so well.

Speakers sound very good but not much power. Works fine for practice in a quiet room by myself. This thing sounds great through a powered speaker and with headphones.

The small MIDI with the nonstandard Y cable works but is definitely a compromise. I'm sure I'll lose the cable. Most functionality is available on MIDI but takes some nonstandard sysex programming.

The "secret" piano has a great sound and really should have been on the main dial rather than the useless toy piano.

Overall, fits my purpose and is a lot of fun to play.

Doing Keyboards RIght

By Max

Yamaha absolutely killed it with this one. Instead of trying to jam every possible parameter and sound into a menu diving nightmare mess they decided to focus in on six really good sounds and a handful of very well made effects to make an absolutely solid emulation of vintage gear. I especially like that it can act as just a sound module without having a laptop on stage. I'm really into gigging with the real stuff despite the weight but in some venues I can't get all my instruments in and out in the amount of time I'm given or it's not practical and this is going to fill that role very well (especially the cp70 patch).

Here's my ratings for the sounds:

Wurlitzer: 4/5 very close to the real thing, the differences are nuanced and in a mix probably would pass for real.

Rhodes 2: 2/5 it sounds like it's supposed to be a brightly adjusted rhodes but it's not a very pleasant sound to me.

Rhodes 1: 3/5 it's missing a lot of the dynamic response of a rhodes as well as the bassy tonality of the real thing. I think it breaks up too quickly with too little force.

Clav 5/5 ZERO latency (unlike the plugins) Very good tonality despite no adjustment of pickups or mute. VERY GOOD for choppy rhythmic playing. Actually sounds like strings being hit. Throw some chorus and drive and it sounds HUGE. I actually think it's better than the nord electro I had because that one sounded like a dinky toy.

Toy 5/5 it's neat I don't use it but it sounds exactly like a toy piano.

CP70: 5/5 This is the reason I bought this because I love the CP70 Chorus sound but my CP70B is 300 plus pounds and is becoming a bit fragile. Very Very very very close to the exact sound the big one makes. No pedals required to dime that chorused sound either.

Effects: 5/5 they are well made and honed to the essential effects popularly used with these electro mechanical instruments. Easy to use and easy to play around despite no parameters on the actual patches. surprising range of tones.

Conclusion:
For the money this is the best emulation I have seen of what could easily be a 10k investment in real instruments for only 400$. Plugged into a larger keyboard with your preferred action this guy can live velcro'd to the top of a board and used as a volume and effects adjuster. Absolutely killer product and I admire their minimalism and focus on making these sounds excellent.

Exactly what I exepected and wanted!

By JohnL from PORTLAND, OR

Really, just for me to use while sitting at my desk at home...an alternative to picking up a guitar to figure something out quickly.

First thing I did was just do some Rick Wright (Pink Floyd) Rhodes and Wurli parts...just what came to find....through the built-in speakers and with the effects in addition to bringing the octave down. Then stepped over to the Clav section, still with the octave down, made sure the autowah was brought up, and just did some basslines/rhythm work.

The effects are outstanding, as are the core sound. Haven't messed with the Delay section too much, just a touch of slapback echo, because, why not, but it can get pretty wild if that's your thing. And the reverb is gorgeous.

Yes, the keys are small, and no, even if you have tiny hands, I don't think the keyboard is physically capable of doing anything fast in terms of single-note runs, single-note trills, or anything technical.

But that's the trade off! Otherwise you'd be looking at something much bigger and heavier, where this, you can toss it under an arm, and you have not just a convenient "sketchpad" instrument, but one that sounds gorgeous.

Admittedly, I don't use the Toy Piano ever! Who knows...maybe somebody can do something with that as an effect or a sound. And haven't bothered to use the "secret" acoustic piano...the Rhodes is generally all I need to work with, and unlike my real Rhodes, this one's in tune. Ditto the Wurlitzer! No missing tines or sputtering electronics.

Build quality is fine. A little nervous about the little toggle switches that swap tremolo and autwah and other effects....so,, I don't think I'd just toss it in a bag/backpack loose without some kind of extra protection, but the rotary knobs are very nice, like a million different detente spots on the reverb, smooth and (so far) extremely reliable.

Not the best, not the worst

By Andrew K. from Brooklyn, NY

I got this because I was in search for a good rhodes, e.piano synth and all the reviews directed me toward the reface. I was impressed at the sound, but it does lack the bottom end compare to some other sampled digital VSTs. I compared it with my Teletone and waves Electric 200 and to be completely honest, I prefer the VSTs over this. So returning it and gonna stick to Teletone series until I can afford a real Rhodes lol

Yes!

By Jim B. from Antioch, TN

I find myself playing stuff I wouldn't have thought of without it.

Using a full size controller it sounds & plays great. The thing I notice most is when you play a complex chord all of the notes come through without turning into mush. I get the idea of the built-in speakers and mini-keyboard but I would have preferred if it was a rack mount or half rack sized module. On the other hand if you're on the road it might be a perfect writing tool.

Every keyboardist should own one

By Colton from Las Vegas
Music Background: Hobbyist

Probably the best value keyboard you'll find. As fun as a toy, but sounds great and can fnuction in a professional way as well (connect to an 88-key midi keyboard and proper speakers). I have it in my car often to play while i drive or sit in traffic. Great for traveling or having available for impromptu jams. Great writing tool since you can play on your lap w/ headphones and pipe your phone into it to play along with. Really love the velocity responsivity as it feels natural to get it to sound how I intend. Great rhodes/wurlitzer sounds for the price and size. The effects are super fun to play with in real time. Also works well as a usb midi controller (knobs can map to midi too). All around, highly recommend the Reface CP.

Excellent Little Electric Piano

By Sweetwater Customer

The Yamaha Reface CP is an outstanding little keyboard. In spite of its portable form factor, it is anything but a toy. The mini-keys are impressively responsive, allowing for a level of expressiveness on par with its full-sized kin. The classic electric piano sounds are very accurate, as demonstrated in a couple of YouTube comparison videos I've found. The slight differences are easily overlooked, especially when heard with other instruments in a mix. The array of on-board effects is excellent, especially considering Yamaha chose to vary the tremolo effect based on the piano being played. I see no reason to use any outboard effects on this keyboard. My only real gripe is with the inclusion of the Toy Piano. While it is accurate, it is quite useless in most situations. The only thing I can think I'd use it for is the bell sounds it produces at the very bottom octave range. Instead of the Toy Piano, there should've been another classic e-piano - the Hohner Pianet. That instrument was played by a number of artists, not the least of whom being Tony Banks from Genesis. This poor oversight/decision is the only thing that keeps the Reface CP from getting 5 stars from me.

Noob’s First Piano

By Michael J. from Madison, WI
Music Background: Songwriter, casual performer, 4 decades guitar, 4 weeks piano :)

I've been writing songs and performing on guitar for 4 decades, but recently decided I'd like to learn to play the piano. My original thought was that I should purchase a MIDI controller with a 37 to 61 key keyboard as I record into GarageBand. However, the more I reviewed MIDI controllers, it seemed like they all had some sort of shortcoming (key feel, sketchy compatibility with DAWs, insufficient to gig with, build quality, etc.). The more I researched, the more I kept coming back to the Yamaha Reface CP. I didn't feel like I needed a full 88 keys, and I was seeing many YouTube videos of experienced players jamming good on the Reface CP, so that's where I put my money. My primary interest is in having a very playable instrument, and the "key feel" of the Reface CP was getting great reviews. Then there were the sounds the instrument makes - emulating vintage EPs. For me, it seemed a perfect fit. I wanted an instrument that I can learn on and ultimately gig with. The MIDI controller functionality is also a bonus.

I've been playing the Reface CP for a little over 3 weeks now, and I've really fallen in love with it. I've read/watched many reviews on the Reface CP, and a few things that come up are the size of the keys, and the small speakers. As to the key size, yes, they're small, and striking a white key that's between two black keys requires precision. I have skinny fingers, so this hasn't presented a problem for me. But be advised if your fingers are on the larger side.

The Reface CP's small speakers also come up frequently in reviews as being not up to par, and they are admittedly very small. However, for my purposes of learning to play the piano at home, the speakers are beyond adequate. I practice at about 1/2 volume - above that and I'd be disturbing my family members with my endless noodling on blues scales. Obviously for gigging, you need the line outs into a PA and you should be golden. I can't wait to run this through a PA someday!

Next up, the build quality - I love it! Very solid build, and as I mentioned previously, the key feel is very smooth. Being a newbie to the piano, I don't have much that I can compare it to, but to me, the keys feel great. They're snappy and solid feeling - not plastic or hollow feeling. Very satisfied with the keys. For such a small unit, it feels relatively heavy and well made.

Another major consideration is the sound. Obviously, right? I will say that the Reface CP sounds amazing. My three favorite emulations are the Rhodes I, Wurlitzer, and Yamaha CP settings. I'm not crazy about the Rhodes II or Clav emulations - nothing wrong with these sounds, they simply don't float my boat. And that f***ing Toy Piano sucks so hard that I can hardly stand it. Why Yamaha? Why? Give me a Grand for crying out loud!! Yes, I know there's this clean piano sound if you do such and such with the selector button - just give it to me as an option and kill that toy piano.

Speaking of sounds, I have to say that I really appreciate the minimalist effect selection of the Reface CP. Personally, I will never need more than just a little grit, tremolo, and reverb, but who knows? All of the effects work great and together allow for a broad palette of sounds, and they're so easy to use. Very tasteful. Including a pic of the Reface CP on its stand. I exclusively play standing up (sitting is the new smoking you know).

Rhodes Goodness

Love the sounds, portability, usability and playability

By Todd A. from Roswell, GA
Music Background: Pro keyboardist/producer/engineer/arranger

This just arrived today from Sweetwater (thanks to my outstanding sales engineer, Paul Allen, for keeping me updated on delivery timing during these challenging supply chain delay times). Trust me, it's worth the wait.

I love it. This is ideal for any piano/Rhodes/Wurli/Clav/CP70-oriented player who needs something super portable with great sounds. Some details:

- Small keys, yes, but really good action. Easy to get used to the smaller form factor. I was surprised at how quickly I adapted to comping, soloing, and using octave shift.
- Easy to use effects/knobs. Very intuitive and easy to turn on effects, set levels and get the sound you want.
- The speakers are surprisingly good. It's a "small" sound, but an accurate one. If you're in a quiet space, you'll be fine without headphones, and you'll be surprised at the detail (effects, timbre, reverb, etc.) of the sound. I didn't hear any distortion (unless the "drive" knob was turned up), but I didn't pound on it at full volume, either. 80% of full volume was plenty audible for me. Looking forward to trying it through headphones (for noisy room cases).
- The MIDI interface cable is included and will allow the Reface CP to serve double duty as a sound module controlled by a
- Get the case Yamaha makes for this. It's big enough to hold the Reface CP, the 12volt power supply, MIDI cable and a small sustain pedal. It's also compact enough to easily transport and protect. Well worth the extra $50 or so.

Overall - this will get a ton of use. It's playable, sounds great and will be my #1 reference for on-the-fly composition, working out parts for solo rehearsal, and even playing scales. For what it was designed for, it's an A+

Worth every dollar. Just buy it already!

By WAGinWNY from Western NY
Music Background: Lifelong involvement in music; only a few years with DAW and electronic hardware.

The sounds this thing can make are just awesome. The only thing Yamaha can be faulted for is the smallish keyboard, but that design choice is also what makes it easily portable. And so what anyway . . . problem solved if you just plug the MIDI keyboard of your choice into it; no configuration necessary. The toggle switches seem just a bit on the flimsy side, but they are in proportion to the size of the unit as a whole, so would look silly if they designed in beefed-up ones. What really makes the CP shine though are the built-in effects. So much fun to play around with, especially the digital delay. If you're on the fence, then you're probably going to love it when it arrives. I'm not an even a proper keyboard player, and I sure do! It's also nice to have the built-in speakers. You can go audio-out or MIDI-out, but that's a choice, not a necessity.

Amazing recreations of classic EP's.

By John H. from PA
Music Background: Musician, composer, and hobbyist.

As someone who has played a variety of EP's and owns a CP70, I truly appreciate the detail and accuracy of design on this unit. I play this with my 88-key controller and I find it actually BETTER than CP. Instead of thinking this is an expensive toy, try to see it as a piano module you can take to the park. This is my second Reface. I'm looking at getting more.

Great Mini Rhodes/Wurly/CP Emulator

By Brett H. from PORTLAND, OR

I mainly bought this to work out ideas on the couch, but the sounds are really outstanding. The pedal emulation is top notch too. The keys are tiny, but it's a small instrument. In 2021, it needs an update: the mini midi port is a pain and needs a midi splitter cable (which comes with the keyboard) to operate; a switch for NFC would have been much preferred (would be great to use with rtpmidi on Bluetooth or wifi), or just full size midi ports.

The best

By Sweetwater Customer from Lincolnwood, IL

Of all the synths I own, the Reface CP is my go to. I love all the voices and effects are great. The mini keys actually have a great feel to them. I find the speakers incredibly convenient (decent quality for quiet brainstorming). When I'm in the mood to play around with chord progressions I just turn it on and play. I don't have to boot up my entire studio. I initially bought this for the sounds, but long term I found it the most convenient and inspiring instrument. (The same applies to the rest of the reface series, just depends which one I have plugged in.) The build is high quality and look great. They resemble those old mini synths from USSR. Additionally, these can be controlled and even used as controllers.

Great Little Keyboard!!!

By Harry E. from Anamosa, IA
Music Background: Professional Musician and Studio Owner/Recording Engineer

I have owned the Yamaha Reface CP (and YC) for a few months now and I really like them. Since this review is for the CP, I will focus on it now...

I like the compact size of this thing because I intend to use it, via MIDI, from a master keyboard for layering an EP sound with my piano sounds. The Reface CP has great EP sounds, although I would gladly trade the Toy Piano sound itself for another Rhodes, maybe a Rhodes sound with more of a ballady sound with more of a bell attack. There is also a way to get an acoustic piano out of the CP but it requires putting the instrument selector knob halfway between any two sounds (and being able to leave it there) and turning on the unit. The piano sound that Yamaha has included may be for testing purposes, but it is pretty good. It it not the same quality as the CFX pianos now available, but still... let's get back to the EP sounds...

The main Rhodes EP sounds are pretty good. You hear all kinds of mechanical noise in them and that is a good thing. The polyphony is 128 notes, so you should never run out of notes when playing the CP. The Wurly is pretty good too. The Clav sound is okay, but I doubt that I would use it much other than for funk music (which is obvious). I can see using the Electric Grand as well, but my focus are on the Rhodes EPs and the Wurly. They are good enough to play solo with a lot of realism.

What really makes this unit stand out, at least for me, is the ability to change your sound on the fly with the switches and knobs for the EFX. NO MENU DIVING!!! If you want more Reverb or a Phaser, all you have to do is turn a knob. You want Chorus, flip a switch and turn up the depth and rate to your liking. It is that simple.

You want the Wurly to have a bit more bite? Add some Drive, via its dedicated knob, and rock out! There is also a Tremelo effect and ALL of these effects can be mae on yhe fly for ANY of the sounds. There is also a Delay (2 kinds) and a Wah effect.

Since there are no menus or screens, you are limited to key presses while turning on the unit when making system changes, but the manual and online resources are pretty clear about how to do these things. I just ran into a problem when using the CP with an arranger (Korg PA arranger) because when I hit the start button to start playing a style, the CP was in Omni MIDI Mode (by default). I had to go into the Advanced Settings, via key presses while turning it on, and I was able to change it from Omni to Channel 1. Now it works just like it is supposed to.

Regarding the size of the keys, they are small. They are smaller than on my Minilogue XD. They are comfy to play, but the key size is pretty comical, at best. For me, it is not much of a problem because I plan on playing the sounds via MIDI from another full-size keybed (Korg Kross 88). It is playable from its own keybed, but you will need to get used to it. Fortunately, there is an octave slider because there are only 37 keys. You could play it by itself live, but you would really have to limit the octave(s) you are playing in unless you watn to be messing around with the Octave slider all the time...

It is also battery-powered so if you wanted to use this with a battery-powered speaker, you could busk just about anywhere for a few hours. It is very light, but is solidly built. I am happy with it.

I do not really see any real drawbacks to this unit except for the MIDI jack. It is not the standard 5-pin MIDI jack. It is a proprietary jack that you will likely to only be able to get from Yamaha. This is problematic.

There is very little that I dislike about the keyboard, especially since I have a specific setup and use for it. I like it and it gives realistic EP sounds to my rig. Now, if I can get my band to play more sings that use these types of sounds...

I give it 5 Stars, since the good definitely outweighs the bad and overall, it is a wise investment.

I will write another review about the Reface YC after I submit this one.

Amazing sound

By B from SLC, UT

Really great tones from this little keyboard. I bought it for the rhodes and hidden piano tones but the wurlitzer sounds really great, too. A couple caveats: the speakers are quite weak and the keys are very small. I usually play with headphones and a larger midi controller. I also bought a small battery bank and velcro'ed it to the side which is a big upgrade over plugging it in because it's a perfect little tool for working things out while you're chilling on the couch.

Music Background: Multi-instrumentalist

At first I thought this little fella was going to be somewhat limiting given its build but I've found so much use out of it I'm blown away. It sounds fantastic, feels great and I have yet to even hook it up to a MIDI keyboard for full range.
The built in speakers are surprisingly pleasant, is a joy to take around with you to parks and other locations, and it's size really brings out creative bursts in seeing what you can do in 3 octaves and some incredible sounds.

Absolutely recommend!! No buyer's remorse whatsoever

Stellar

By Sweetwater Customer

Bought this on a skeptical hunch and turned out to be one of my favorite keyboards of all time. And this is coming from someone who normally takes a while to warm up to new gear -- kind of the inverse of the "honeymoon phase". I don't know what kind of secret magic mojo Yamaha sprinkled all over this thing but the range of sounds is astonishing considering it's only various electro-acoustic pianos. The FX have been really fine tuned to each voice so they add so much sound shaping. I hate minikeys but somehow I forgive it on this one. I can't explain why, my opinion on them hasn't changed either. For whatever reason it all works here. They feel soft and are responsive. It's like playing the piano on little clouds. Also this thing plays really well with FX. Even when drenched in lush reverb it punches right through and doesn't turn to mud like on other keyboards I have.

10/10!

By Sweetwater Customer

Obsessed with this little keyboard, it's exactly what I hoped it'd be! I needed this creative nudge and that's what it gives me. And shipping time was unreal, I didn't expect it to arrive so soon. This is one of the best purchases i've ever made!!

I love this little thing. Plugged into speakers the sounds are exceptional. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great little keyboard/midi controller.

Not what I expected

By Sweetwater Customer

Even knowing they were mini keys, I did not expect them to be as small as they are, the feel seems good, I just couldn't get past the size of the keys. The speakers are fairly worthless, they do let you hear the unit. I mainly purchased it to be used as a sound module for my RD64 and I was going to get 2 units, the CP and the YC, so the key size was not going to be that big of a deal, but after hearing the CP I decided to return it and put the funds into a Roland Juno DS61.The sounds did not seem to be of the quality that I was looking for. If you really need something very small and portable the Yamaha CP is ok as it is built fairly well and has useable inputs and outputs for a keyboard that is the size of a toy. Overall it was just not what I expected.

Truly large sound from such a small keyboard!

By Dimitri from High Point, NC
Music Background: Singer/Songwriter

When it arrived it was almost everything I expected and more. Though the size was smaller in person than in any video or demonstrations I had seen (didn't take long to get used to) the sound was truly fantastic even though the onboard speakers could be a tad better getting slightly distorted at higher volumes (even though it doesn't get very loud). Using its onboard speakers for personal/practicing use is perfect but I'd suggest using headphones or the line out as the sound quality is quite a bit better. I'm also unsure with the durability of the included power supply but only time will tell if it is. All of that aside it really doesn't take away from how truly awesome the Reface CP sounds and I cannot wait to write with this, record, and even play shows with it as my go to for classic electric piano sounds!

Great for playing with different sounds

By Chris from San Francisco
Music Background: Hobby

This is my go-to keyboard for just playing around with sounds and trying to dial in the right sound for my song. I also have the DX, and between the two I do most of my songwriting on them. Top quality sounds. Very portable but big enough to play songs on. Super happy with this.

Easter egg hidden grand piano!

By Christopher P. from Burlington, CT
Music Background: Pro

I am writing a second review as you should know about the hidden easter egg. If you put the keyboard type nob inbetween a setting and then turn off and on the power, you have a wonderful full acoustic grand piano. Makes this thing much more valuable and fun.

Finally

By Chasen S. from Greensboro, NC
Music Background: Producer

I make rock disco music inspired by bands lik Tame Impala, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Electric piano is a big part of the sound Im going for. Vsts are not good enough unless you spend over $150, and I personally have a hard time spending big money on software. I wanted a nord but there's no cheap way to get one. I thought about getting a lower level workstation but they just aren't very sexy, and the appearance of gear is a big deal for me. This thing more than satifiies my needs for smooth ep sounds. It doesn't feel like your playing samples or a cheap impression of an instrument. It feels very smooth and natural. Also it's a great little midi controller. The onboard effects are useful not cheesey at all, i really dig the tremolo. The built in speakers are trash but that doesn't stop me from pumping out silky Rhodes lines from my bed. It is impossible to put down and I love it. I do wish there was a straight up acoustic piano sample in it, maybe in place of the you piano. Other than that, 10/10.

not a toy. sounds pro

By Levi H. from Ma
Music Background: over 20 years of grooving on all kinds of instruments

this thing looks kind of like a toy. its not. the wurly, rhodes, and clav plus the very good fx make this an incredible purchase. i control it with my main workstation by midi but the mini keys are very playable compared to other mini sized key beds ive tried. the sounds hold up to keyboards that cost 5 times as much. you wont regret buying this if your looking for classic vintage rock and funk fusion keyboard sounds and fx.

loving the small keys

By Paul
Music Background: extensive musical experience

I love this keyboard as much as the first synth I had in the 80's. Yep. It is inspiring for writing songs. I have small hands and am an advanced classical player, and I love the feel of the small keys. If you have large fingers hook up a midi keyboard, but I use the little keys for shows and writing and inspiring and recording. Love love love it. Would buy another in an instant.

Very Good / Tiny little keys

By DR from SF
Music Background: sorta. almost.

The sounds are very good, and the voicing of the FX is tasteful. The build quality is very good. The Wurlitzer and CP stand out, the Rhodes are ok.

The 3.5 rating is because the keys are SO. D***. SMALL.

There is real estate on both sides and seemingly above. I am sure there are build reasons why they did what they did, but it is hard to interact with keys that little.

Great keyboard, little box

By Jane M. from TN
Music Background: 37064

This was my first keyboard, and hopefully the one I learn to play with. It's worth every penny, with it's 6 iconic sounds of the seventies you can really do anything with it.

First rate sounds

By John from San Francisco
Music Background: Home recording musician

When I saw the Sweetwater video review for the Reface CP, I knew I wanted it, and now that I have it home it's even better.

As everyone says, top notch sounds. 4 of the sounds are pretty similar, but that's actually what I love about it. Between the knobs and effects and the slightly varied sounds, I don't think there's an electric piano sound I can't achieve with this thing.

My favorite part after I got past the quality of sounds was the fun of tweaking them to create just the sonic quality I'm looking for. It's fun to just play with and very creative. In fact, it's so much easier to find the sounds you want by tweaking things on the fly that I think I'm going to get another in the series, probably the CS.

Lastly, very solid built quality. The keys are obviously not weighted quality, but they feel pretty good considering the side. The sliders and knobs feel sturdy, and the speaker sound surprisingly good for their size. I also love the portability. This has to be the most versatile keyboard for portability. I can just go with batteries and the built in speakers to play with it. I can plug in headphone. I can use as a midi controller. Or I can send it to my monitors and you'd think I was playing a $3,000 Wurlitzer.

Very happy with this purchase.

Really good.

By Christopher P.
Music Background: Pro

First of all the sounds and the feel of this thing are fantastic. I also found it perfect as a space saving controller keyboard. The small keys have some advantages like for my 6 year old learning keyboards - perfect size. I love that I can use batteries and play it in bed. If they had a full size one I would buy that too. You can actually get a lot of different sounds out of this thing with the effects.
Just a couple of things that bring it down half a star: The toy piano has an out of tune A, which I'm sure is to add to the authenticity and quirkiness of a toy piano. Not a big niggle. The biggest niggle is that the built in speaker distorts very easily. It's weird that is generally just the right speaker. I returned one and the new unit was identical. There are other reports of this online too. I know a lot of people are going to plug in to an external amplifier but it's a shame that this otherwise perfect instrument has this flaw.

Little keyboard. Big sound.

By Wcoppage from MS Delta

As always, I choose to buy from Sweetwater because if the personal service I have been given for well over ten yrs. Ryan has been instrumental in my purchases. Usually I run everything through him. When I saw the price drop I jumped on this deal.

This keyboard, while
Small in size has some amazing tones and playability. I also have the organ version. While I am not a big midi person I do like the ability to hook up to a full size and use the cp as the control processor.

Thank you

Great!

By Corey from Allentown

A solid 4 star product here. The sounds are lush and full of detail, when listening though headphones you can really hear the care Yamaha took with this one. I have yet to hear a Wurlitzer emulation that sounds better than the one in here, and don't get me started on the EP and CP sounds... AWESOME. I find the toy piano to be a surprising addition, while it does sound realistic, I have no need for it.

The built in FX are studio grade, and having a knob for every adjustment make it easy to make changes. Plus the ios app allows quick recall of your settings, making the need for internal memory unnecessary,

The mini keys really surprised me. Would I use them at a gig? No of course not, that's what the midi port is for. But for working out ideas and just playing around they're by and far the best mini keys on the market. Yes you may need to adjust your style to play in such a small area, but again no one is going to make the case you should bring only this to your next gig.

The build is solid and weighed more then i was expecting. The built in speakers are kind of a joke, as its easy to distort them with the low register, but its not really a big deal with stereo output plus headphones.

If you are after these sounds, I believe there is no better option then the CP.

A beast

By ZB R. from Rock Island, IL
Music Background: Gigging musician

I just love the reface CP. Very well built. Even the minikeys are the best minikeys on the market. Sitting around the house I use the minikeys but on stage and in the studio I use a midi controller. If you play Rhodes live and can't afford roadies to lug that mammoth, this may be your answer. It definitely was my answer. All 6 sounds are very high quality.

loving this keyboard

By Paul from Toronto
Music Background: lots

Totally Inspiring... I wrote 4 songs on this piano the first week I got it. I love it! Pro sound and pro keys, just smaller size. I love the effects, long cascading analog echoes, thick chorus, phaser. The CP70 sound alone is worth the price of the unit.
