Large-diaphragm Tube Condenser Mic with Switchable Polar Patterns and Onboard Preamp

Chandler Limited's multi-year design project with Abbey Road Studios has yielded the first EMI-branded mic in over a half century. The REDD Microphone presents a classic aesthetic — but this is no vintage mic clone. It marks a paradigm shift of major proportions, incorporating historic circuits and their legendary sonics in a new and unique way. The all-analog design combines microphone and preamp in an elegant, handcrafted large-diaphragm condenser microphone you can use with or without an external mic pre. Fitted with a custom handmade platinum-membrane capsule and the vintage vacuum tube REDD.47 mic amplifier circuit, the REDD Microphone will output line-level signal and features a Drive setting that introduces tasty, vintage-flavored harmonic color.

This is a Holy Grail microphone and Future Classic

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Executive Producer - Universal Music Group

The Chandler Redd reminded me of a project that famed engineer Doug Sax and master tech Steve Hazeltine were involved in, the result was the infamous Sheffield Labs mic, which is now one of the rarest most sought-after mics in the world and shares some unique aspects of the REDD. The best way I can describe the Chandler; Imagine if the finest C12, the finest ELAM 251 E, and the finest U47 decided to have a single offspring. That golden child would be the Chandler Redd microphone. It imparts the best aspects of all those iconic mics into a single highly versatile signal path.

To be very clear, this is a modern and bright microphone that captures all the subtle nuances and air in the upper frequency spectrum while equally sharing a phenomenally pleasing and present mid-range and the perfect bottom end bloom, it's just astonishingly gorgeous sounding on everything. We spent a full day and compared it to a Sony C800G, a stunning 1980's ELAM 251 and an original U47 from 1972. We worked through several sources vocals to drums and from Rap to Country with each mic, all 4 engineers picked the Chandler as the clear favorite. All 4 engineers work with Tier 1 artists so they know a great mic when they hear it. Highly recommend trying one for yourself it's incredible.

Always Sounds Great

By Sweetwater Customer

This microphone is truly amazing, although to be fair I love my Manley Gold and Chandler TG Mic also lol. The REDD mic always sounds great on every source and can be adjusted to suit the source to sound even better. For example, it'll sound great on a baritone vocal, but you can adjust the low contour if you want the mic to sound a bit brighter. The drive switch is wonderful and can add some really nice harmonic content that is never overdone but always interesting.

Some qualities that the microphone has regardless of the settings are:
1) Smooth and full sound
2) Incredible 3 Dimensionality/Depth of sound
3) Fidelity without sounding boring
4) Extremely well balanced frequency response. Deep full bass, Accurate Midrange, and an incredibly soft top end that smooths everything out while retaining all the source detail/information.

It is possible that this is the greatest microphone ever made. I recognize that sounds hyperbolic but in my use of the microphone and reading about it online compared to other classics that argument could be made.

That being said, this microphone works on everything but is not always my first choice on everything. As I said I love my other microphones such as my Manley Gold and Chandler TG Mic. At the end of the day it all depends on the song and how I want the source to sound in the context of the song. I would absolutely rate those microphones 5 stars also as they are both basically perfect also just different. However, for a microphone that you can just "set and forget" for the most possible sources, with the least amount of adjustments I would lean towards the REDD mic. Everyone already knows this, but it also has a built in preamp which is pretty cool.

Wrong Mic For Hip-Hop Vocals

By Artifact
Music Background: Spoken Word & Hip-Hop Artist

I've been recording, mixing, and mastering Hip-Hop since 2010. I've had and used many microphones and to be honest, this microphone is at the bottom of the list for me. As much as I wanted to like the vocals, I couldn't force myself to. This mic has a dark, thick, and harsh sound to it. Which isn't good for hip-hop vocals.

I can record vocals with my Samson C01, run it through a Solid State Preamp and get a better sound than this microphone.

Folks. Don't believe the hype about this $ tube microphone. There are way better options at this price point and lower, such as the Lauten Audio Eden FC-386, which is my next microphone.

This thing rocks!

By Michael from Madison, WI
Music Background: Pro singer/songwriter with tons of tracks in the Film/TV world.

I've owned and sung on many high-end mics, from Manley ref's, (A great mic) to the obvious, greatest of the classic Neumann U47. This REDD mic is what I'd call the new go-to. First of all, you do NOT need a preamp, a Chandler pre is built-in. For a singer/songwriter like me, this helps me keep the creative waves rolling, or "wavs" if you will, because it's fast and easy-to-use. Yet, I LOVE the choices this mic has too; from "contour" which I love on acoustic guitar, to DRIVE if you want to really hit something, to the normal settings, where I spend most of my recording time, for in that setting, I just turn on the mic and go, no worries. It also has an Omni setting. The sound rises close to the NEUMANN U47 I used to sing on. It's great on my acoustic guitar as male and female vocals, as my 18-year-old twin daughters are doing their new EP using it, and sounding fantastic.

A Truly Magical Microphone!

By Paul S. from San Diego, CA
Music Background: Player, engineer, producer and mic junkie since 1971

This is an incredibly special mic! Sonically it has clear, round, deep low frequencies with no hint of "mud", the midrange is simply magical - clear, detailed, beautiful presence and the high end is smooth and detailed without harshness or excessive "hype". I have a very sibilant voice and always need a de-esser. Not with the Chandler! The platinum diaphragm and extremely short signal path to the preamp makes it very dynamic and responsive to even the most subtle changes, while generating very low self-noise.

Some of my clients are wanting to do single-mic, mono, live vocal/guitar recordings. I can set this mic up 30" from the talent and with a little care in positioning, it will capture all the emotion, detail and depth of their performance. This mic allows for distance without becoming thin and uninteresting.

Since it has its own vintage EMI tube preamp built in, and generates line-level output, it can be plugged directly into your favorite hardware compressor. (I have a Chandler EMI Opto 500 that pairs up very nicely).

I've owned most of the iconic classic mics over the past decades. What I was looking for is a mic that would deliver the "vibe" of a U47, C37a and 251E without all the headaches of 60 year old mics. I wanted a mic that would hug the performers ears and help them generate inspirational performances. The Chandler REDD does all of this and more. Its certainly not the most expensive mic I've ever owned, but it very well may be the best.

Hearing Is Believing

By john from california
Music Background: producer engineer

this mic is superb. future classic. the bottom is huge, mids are rich and the high end is detailed yet smooth. I was using ribbons for years and to me this mic has many of the thickness traits of my favorite ribbon, coles 4038. the difference is it gives you that extra dimension on the mid-high and high frequencies without ever getting harsh. I use it for everything and couldn't be happier with the results. due to the cost, there is a lot of debate online about its value but it appears many of those debating have no intention of actually investing to try it for themselves. hearing is believing so if you can give it a shot I am certain you will find that you will want to keep for life.

(Vintage and with a touch Modern) a new breed!

By His-Way from Woodbridge, VA

I am just totally blown away with the sound of this Mic. You can get a wide variation of tone with the preamp gain, the drive control in conjunction with the fader knob and the push pul phantom mode. The hand made build quality is also superb. No corners have been cut on this instrument. It has become my go to microphone for everything. It sits very well in the mix and there's not a whole lot you have to do to it. It brings a lot to the table. I used to do a lot of work with my Neumann Mic's to get the sound I wanted but this Mic surpass all that right from the start. If you can afford it, buy it, you won't regret it!

Amazing mic!

By Howie from Long Island
Music Background: Musician, songwriter, producer

So I took a plunge with this mic. Partly influenced by the sweetwater mic shootout and partly from some outside recs. Result: best mic I have ever used. Background: I've used a variety of mid priced mics -- mojave ma-200, some higher end ribbons, sm7b. Have lots of higher end pres. Redid vocals for a song I had just recorded with the chandler. Night and day difference: Very very significant improvement. New recording smoother, sat perfectly in mix, present but no harshness. Biggest difference was zero need to eq out nasal or whiny aspects of my voice and no real need or compression. And it sounded like me. It has a good variety of tones depending on output and pre settings, low contour, Omni vs. cardioid. I have definitely found my silver bullet for polished vocals! Highly recommend if you can afford the purchase.

The Modern Holy Grail Vocal Mic

By Dominic from NY
Music Background: Recording guy, synth nerd

I bought this mic from Sweetwater with serious doubts. I already own a few great mics (FLEA 47, c800, u87, Manley Gold, an original u47 with vf14 tube, and a few others) and bought this thinking it would be a great mic to travel with and use in the "B" room of our modest studio.

I literary bought this sight unseen, based upon the fantastic products I've bought from Chandler limited in the past. I could not be more delighted.

The Chandler REDD mic is officially my favorite mic now, especially for vocals. It's a new modern classic, up there (and even above) my aging u47. It now resides in our main room, and has the privledge of being the mic we never take down. Once you hear how sensitive this mic is ( while still being flattering. Hard to do ) and how versatile the tone shaping is... how extended it is in every direction... the sense of depth... never harsh.... warm but still clear.

I'd sleep with it if I could. It's seriously the best mic I'll probably ever own.
