Little Labs Redeye 3D Phantom Direct Box & Re-amp Device Reviews

Direct Box/Re-amper with Through-chain Monitoring, Two UTC Transformers, and Phantom-powered Buffered and Passive Inputs

At Sweetwater, we're gratified to be seeing serious products that make guitar re-amping an easy, high-fidelity endeavor. At the core of the re-amping process is the direct box, and Little Labs' Redeye 3D Phantom sports a high-quality one with phantom-powered hi-fi buffered and passive inputs. The Redeye 3D Phantom features two UTC transformers - similar to those found in many classic pro audio units - for simultaneous direct box and re-amping use. Comparing your direct and re-amped signal is a piece of cake - one button gives you instant "wyhiwyg" (what you hear is what you get) monitoring. The Redeye 3D Phantom also lets you effortlessly interface your professional +4 gear with instrument-level equipment.

Can't use DI and Reamp at the same time

By David H. from OAKLAND, CA
Music Background: producer & eng

It deserves 4 stars. But I'm marking 3 since everyone else gave it 5 stars and I bought it for a specific purpose that it can't perform that sort of makes it about half as useful as it could be. IMO.

To start off the thing sounds amazing. I'm tracking guitar and bass DI through this into an LA-610 mic pre. Losers will say "just run it through the LA-610 DI?" - look man the mic transformers just do something different for me. It's like the perfect DI sound. Honestly most of the time my clean guitar tones are like 70% DI now.

I've also got a "0" latency ADAT interface that can route output directly from an input while recording. My hope was that I could capture the DI, and also dial in the awesome 610 DI *through* the reamp at the same time. Unfortunately it's just not possible. I of course can route the high z signal from the "through" into the amps which I do...sometimes it gets phasey, sometimes it sounds great, sometimes I sit there and reamp the same tone from the 610 DI because it's like 25% better.

It still is 100% great for what it does and I would recommend this to anyone who's got budget and doesn't care about the super specific thing that I cared about. And I still use it so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Perfect Solution!

By Anthony M. from Riverside, CA
Music Background: Guitar Player

I wanted a better solution to the Creation Audio Labs MW1 which I was unsuccessfully (for years) trying to make work as guitar front end/signal splitter/DI (always ground noise and knob/button/input problems). I went with a Pepper and a Red Eye 3D and instantly my problems were solved as a front end/splitter/DI. No noise added to my signal path with the earth lift and the Pepper has a very cool pedal loop in/out. This works so good and I'm so happy with the results. Worth every penny. This is something that every guitarplayer should have as their front end who needs to split their signal and use as a DI/Reamp. Through email, Johnathan Little was very helpful in finding a solution. It's nice being able to talk to the designer of a product for advice.

This is it

By Ben from New York, NY
Music Background: Professional producer and guitarist

I'm using this to Reamp high gain guitar and bass. I've tried several units before this which have given me either weak signal or too much noise. The Red Eye just works. I've got more signal than I'll ever need and it's dead quiet. I wish I would have tried this sooner!

It seems like most Reamp boxes are not designed to replicate the output of guitar pickups geared for modern metal. This box solves this problem with a 20db gain boost. It's actually so much output that you can use a parametric EQ in your DAW to tighten your low end and forgo a boost pedal when crafting modern metal tones. Even with something like a rectifier.

Bravo little labs!

As always Sweetwater was amazing with fast shipping and a bag of candy! Thank you Ben Robinson!

Does what it says on the tin

By Carlos T.
Music Background: Artist / producer

The secret to reamping seems to be getting the right level on the DI recording to begin with, and this unit makes our lives easier for that. Finally, when reamping, I was able to get a very similar if not identical sound to what I'd get directly from the guitar.
Comes in a sturdy frame, seems pretty well built.

Great Device

By PAUL from Long Island City, NY

This DI/Reamp device is great; I tested at various mic pre-amp levels and, unless you have ridiculous gain, the signal from DI is identical to the one being passed through the amp. I A/B'd using the same effects chain once live and second using the DI and it sounded identical.

A reamp box that never disappoints

By Fernando G.
Music Background: Musican, producer, guitar tech, and recording engineer.

I've tried several reamping devices with mixed results -some quite disappointing. The only two boxes that have never let me down so far are the Red Eye Phantom 3D and the Two Notes Reload, which is a completely different beast. If you're looking for a simple-not-so-simple solution, the Little Labs is the right way to go. Just watch the demo I did many years ago. It's in Spanish, but you might find it helpful to see how good this box sounds.

Expensive, but worth it.

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Home studio user

My application: Using my UAD Apollo to capture a dry guitar performance via the instrument input, so that the signal can then be sent to the line outs for re-amp and re-capture using Fryette load boxes instead of mics on cabs. This application has a potential for ground loops and hum to develop between the line out of the PC and the instrument input of a tube amp. This problem is further compounded through the use of FX hardware that connects to the amp via "4 cable method". This device is one of VERY FEW commercially available black boxes that will enable you to do this 100% passively and it is arguably the best engineered solution for this purpose on the market today.

Why is this device useful? It uses custom wound transformers of a high-end make, to cleanly deliver a pro-level signal at proper impedance, to an amplifier or your pedalboard, while breaking the potentially hum-inducing grounding path that would typically be a part of an unbalanced cable run.

For best results, use one of these on a +4dbu line level signal (gotta use XLR on the back), and plug the unbalanced instrument level output in to your amp. Done deal. No need to power it, unless you want to use its onboard preamp to overdrive your amp or something. This device is produced to a greater degree of quality than the equivalent Radial product (superior componentry). It can be used as a passive or active DI as well, if you need to plug a guitar in to a line input, be it balanced or unbalanced.

A truly spectacular product that does everything it claims to do, and a lot more if you get creative. Boutique grade build quality and more features than it actually needs. The "secret sauce" in these comes from the pro grade transformers. It's 3x more expensive than other DI/reamp products and worth every penny if you need something which is designed to convert +4dbu to instrument level and don't want a lot of coloration in the signal.

Super Transparent

By Keston from Fort Wayne. IN

I tested this unit thoroughly between each output and mode, and it sounds great. I was using passive pickups to test the DI so the active output sounded best to me. If you want a great DI for a reasonable price you've stumbled upon the right one.
I've watched a few comparison videos on DIs and a lot of them colored the sound; with the redeye I wouldn't have been able to tell each test apart if it weren't labeled. 10/10

I love this thing,

By Dante from Los Angeles
Music Background: Rock

The review above is not accurate or factual, there are no problems with the re-amping whatsoever. The XLR input needs a standard +4db line input to function properly. This thing is a dream, specially for metal heads like myself, I can push the re-amp switch to drive my amp into uncharted territories.

Highly recommended.

Works as it should!!

By Jeffrey T. from Nashville TN
Music Background: Engineer/Producer

I have always had issues with other reamps sounding even close to what the original source sounded like, thankfully, those days are gone!! I have been working with a client that does not have the number of amps I do and it has been a problem as it limits their sonic palette. Finally I have found something that works!!! We can now record a DI signal and I can get it back and manipulate it as needed. Thanks Jonathan Little!!!

Check your interface specs before ordering!

By Mitch

The Redeye 3d is a fantastic little DI/Reamp box with a glaring flaw that forced me to return it: the signal attenuation on the reamp out is just too drastic.

I am using an Audient id14 interface and the line outputs are +12db max output. Even with the reamp overdrive circuit engaged (which adds 10db) my reamp signal was too weak to match the DI signal (easy to toggle back and forth with the DI/reamp button). This was with a healthy amount of preamp gain (levels peaking at -10db). I had to increase the hardware output levels in my DAW by about 6db to get unity, but this started clipping my converters.

I spoke with Jonathan at Little Labs and he confirmed that +12db max output is too weak and that this device was designed with things like analog tape machines in mind with upwards of +24db max output. Long story short, check your interface specs and make sure the outputs can do at least +18db. Just trying to save you some headache!

Excellent DI, Excellent Re-Amp!

By Mark J. from Fort Worth Tx

This device has transformed my recording process.
I purchased it primarily to use for re-amping, but the added DI ability won it out over some of the dedicated re-amp boxes at similar price points.

In use, I I have noticed increased dynamics and clarity on my DI guitar/bass tracks, with bass tracks being improved drastically over going straight in on my Focusright 18i20.

The re-amp function works as advertised, and the added TRS in/out jacks on the rear of the unit make it easy to connect everything up however needed.

Does exactly what I need it to do

By Sweetwater Customer

Bought this to run DAW tracks through pedal fx. Works perfectly and the build quality seems top notch. Very happy so far!

What I Needed

By Devin from Indianapolis
Music Background: Producer, Engineer, Guitarist, Bassist

I got this because I wanted to be able to focus on playing when I'm recording and making stuff in my little home studio, then focus on dialing in the gear, setting up mics, and capturing the sound afterwards. I was first looking at the Little Labs Pepper, since it's probably the best reamp/DI on the market, but the price was kinda ridiculous for me, plus I wasn't going to be using half the features in it, like the blend for instance. When I found out Little Labs made the Redeye, which is nearly the same thing but without the stuff I didn't need for roughly the same price as a Radial DI and a Radial Reamp box, I couldn't not grab it. The only small thing I don't like is the plastic covering on the top and sides, and I'd be more inclined to use it as a DI on gigs if it were entirely the aluminum casing that's on the faces and bottom of it, but since I exclusively use it at home right now, it's not like it'll get beaten up anyway. The switches and connectors seem pretty high quality.

Sweet

By Josh from Muscatine Iowa
Music Background: Artist

this devices is pretty dope ! I mean just look at the name . When I first got the redeye in the mail i thought that the way it was packaged was nice and neat. I tried the active Di first using passive pickups and the sound seemed cleaner then if I were to plug strieght into my mixer . I noticed I had more head room before clipping ! Which is awesome . After trying out the active di I whent ahead and tried using the passive di with active pickups and was simply blown away at how my guitars tone was so clear and open. After recording a segment of some heavy shredding I decided to send the dry signal out and back into the redeye for some more fun . I was able to get a noice and clean non sterile heavy guitar rhytem in stereo using the same source / signal / mic , but different speakers and amps . Way awesome !

Three for the price of one!

By Alejandro from Florida
Music Background: Recording engineer, producer, composer and educator

Excellent little box! I was looking for a high quality active DI when I stumbled upon this box. Although I already have a re-amp box, I decided to give this one a try. Instantly blown away! I didn't realize that this box allows you to listen to your recorded direct take through your existing amp with just a button push away! Pass through to your amp and playback from your DAW through your amp with a button press. Genius! The transformers are awesome sounding as well (and yes there are two transformers: one for the active DI and the other for the reamp). The reason this box is a 3 in 1 is because it has a passive input on the back as well (for guitars or basses with active pickups). I'm proud to be the first one to review this box and I hope that others will venture into this unit because it is incredibly functional. Considering that a good ramp box costs around $200 and a good DI around the same price as well, this is a bargain.
