3-channel Guitar Preamp Pedal with 12AX7 Tube, FX Loop, MIDI I/O, and Analog Cab Sim

The Two Notes ReVolt Guitar is a 3-channel amplifier simulator with an all-analog signal path, complete with a 12AX7 preamp tube — run at a healthy 200V — for added warmth and bite. The ReVolt Guitar's three channels deliver the full gamut of tones, from high-headroom cleans to hard-rock crunch to searing high-gain leads. You also get an integrated OD-Boost circuit to bolster your spotlight-stealing solos. An analog speaker simulation ensures a polished, miked-cab sound, both onstage and in the studio. Integrating the ReVolt Guitar with the rest of your rig is a cinch, thanks to a 4-cable mode, an FX loop, and MIDI I/O. This guitar preamp pedal also includes a collection of ten DynIRs for situations where you need more DI flexibility. Guitarists searching for a robust, made-to-move solution for their pedalboards and fly rigs will get tons of mileage out of the Two Notes ReVolt Guitar.

Amazing Sound!

By Philip P. from SPRING, TX

This is an amazing preamp/amp simulator pedal. I keep swapping this in and out with my Tone King Imperial, and frankly prefer the tone from the Two Notes, which is about a 1/3 of the cost. I swapped the stock tube for a Genalex 12AU7, and it dropped the noise floor, really cleaned up the high gain channels, and still has tons of headroom. Having said that, the tone is fine with the stock tube, just that there is a little hiss at baseline. If I weren't playing primarily in worship, where a background hiss is easily heard, the stock tube would have been fine. This preamp is fantastic for straight to FOH. The only drawback is that there is only one option for cab sim.

Liked it so much I bought another one

By Sweetwater Customer

Bought one when they first came out and fell in love with it. Recently a buddy needed to build a lfy rig and already had a CAB M so I hooked him up with a Revolt. He couldn't be happier. Well worth he money.

Sheer joy for this beginner/intermediate player

By Sonny R. from Waltham, MA

I had only used solid state amps until I got this unit and I have a ways to go to understand tone in general, but I am in love and I don't care how I got here. I like the simplicity of the three options presented on this unit. The tones are so giggle-causing awesome that I contracted extreme GAS immediately and spent cold hard cash on another tube amp (monoprice 15-w, which is also a GREAT find) and made my own MOD102+ amp from kit and woodworked a nice amp cabinet from a 12-inch celestion. Now I am awash in tube tones. This thing—led me to the enlightened state I now am in. Phew!

Buy if you want to enter nirvana, but do not go gently into that good night—will likely cause GAS.

I frickin' love it

By craig v. from SAN FRANCISCO, CA

I've had too many digital modelers, expensive stuff. I really think this is the way to go. I don't wanna give up the pre-amp to a digital model. I'm currently using the Revolt in a four cable method, but I've also bought the Opus. I look forward to getting that rolling. ...I was making the digital modelers work feel-wise with a high-voltage tube drive, and even better might be a high-voltage tooob boost, but I also own an embarrassing array of time-based pedals, so sticking with the digital modelers, because they're all-in-one, was unnecessary for me, since I'm not in love with the digital preamp experience anyhow. This pedal is a steal to me. I think an eq pedal is helpful with the clean clean channel. I use a tilt and a low-mid soft Q notch. It's pretty bass rich. I wonder about other preamps too, like the stuff from Victory. But, I think this is a Great Product, absolutely, and the price is nice. (I have spent no time with the analog cab model in it, so I can't speak to that.)

The best preamp pedal I've found so far.

By Sweetwater Customer from AZ

I've been running a setup using tube preamp pedals into my Fryette Powerstation as a power amp for years now, and I've tried a number of preamp pedals to varying success. I have to say, as a whole, this is the the most solid, all-around pedal out of the 6 I've used. It has all the features I'd want, including three channels with very intuitive controls, midi, and--this is important--a hard switch for the cab sims!

Side story: Another tube preamp pedal from an "elite" company (you can probably guess) has a terrible system where the cab sims are switched on and off by holding a footswitch and there is no indicator light. It also doesn't remember your prior settings when you turn it back on. Did I mention that pedal is twice the cost of this one and the sound quality isn't as good?

Overall, this pedal is a God-send, as it does everything I need and it works very well with comps, ODs, and dist. pedals (unlike what another reviewer stated). I will warn that it has a distinctly "modern" voicing, but I think that makes it a great base for other pedals. If you aren't running pedals, though, a vintage sound is difficult to achieve.

Almost terrible

The only usable tone is the plexi channel. And it doesn't take any boost pedal well.

Excellent product

By Tom from Ashland, WI
Music Background: Old Rock and Roller from the 70's still doin' it.

I was looking for a preamp to play Classic Rock basically into the house mixer. I stumbled across the ReVolt on Sweetwater's website. Being skeptical, I contacted my sales engineer, Alex Campos. He assured me that Two Notes built solid, quality gear. He was right! I have on my pedal board, a Fender, a Marshall, and a Soldano amp, with boost function for each "amp". I added reverb, modulation, and delay pedals. I can copy just about any sound I need in the realm of Classic Rock. The cab emulation is great. The only downside of the unit is, I also play acoustic guitar. The acoustic guitar does not work well with tubes. When I use the bypass function, I lose the effects loop (but I retain the cab emulation). I run the reverb before the preamp, so I have something to perk up the acoustic. Other than that, I'm very, very pleased with this unit. I use a Bose L1 Compact for a stage monitor, but any small powered speaker would do the job. Highly recommended!!

Instant AC/DC sounding crunchy plexi sounds!

By Eric D. from Ankeny, IA
Music Background: Middle aged cover band lead guitarist

I think the crunch channel sounds amazing after adding your own IR. Very plexi sounding. AC/DC sounds all day long. The bad: I really don't understand why they don't give you more options with IR's on each channel and the ir that it comes with is just ok. It does have a lot of hum as some have mentioned but it has a tonnn of gain so that should be expected with analog. With that being said, I would probably give it 4.7 only because I think they nailed the plexi when you add it to the right IR. Also the price… what can you really expect? For 350 that plexi alone is worth it! I personally can't get plexi sounds like that with my 1500 dollar helix. The lead channel is ok, but the plexi channel sounds better with a tube screamer in front of it for leads and you get less hum that way if you want higher gain. If you are on a budget and looking for something to get you started with direct amp sims. I think this is a great option. Also works great combing with other digital modelers or ampless pedal board.

Replaced a Le Clean with the Revolt

By William A. from Indianapolis
Music Background: Old Days: Hard Rock Currently: Country/Bluegrass/Midwestern Rock

My use case is to use this as an easy ampless electric tone for small live gigs. Before this I was using a Le Clean for a few months, and a Mesa Road King/Soldano cab before that. As the gigs get too small for amps- the pedal sims with tube pres became a rather nice option in almost every way.

The Le Clean (the past): The Le Clean has a better punch in the 100-150hz range than the Revolt, but it is basically a 2ch amp with no boost function. That's great until you need either that push button ability to defeat a sleepy FOH, or you would like to set up a 3ch sound with Clean/Semi Clean/Dirty flavors. It is a 2ch rig that sounds like the same amp or shall we say contiguous. If you aren't in need of more gain than clean and semi clean/moderate OD (Summer of '69 if ya strum it real hard) it is a great rig

The Revolt (the now): The Revolt is 3 different amps (Awesome)...and it is also 3 different amps (so not very contiguous EQ profiles or tone contours). It is a highly versatile 3ch setup with the ability to cover tones from country spank to fairly heavy rock and nearly all of the in betweens. The Ch 1 clean (fender Bassman) for me sends out quite a bit of 'subwoofer frequency' that is below the typical usable frequencies of a guitar. I see quite a bit of 75-100hz come off my G&L ASAT with mfd's. Thick sounds are fun- but I think I like the way the Le Clean was geared to 100-150hz (just above the subwoofers) usable frequencies. That is nitpicky and an HPF and a notch or two of EQ will help. Ch 2 (the plexi) I run low gain hi post 'volume' and it as a nice feel to it as a medium tone. There is significant reduction of the 'Beef' that you get from Ch 1 (which is where I feel like some cohesion between the 3 channels might be missing). Overall, Ch 2 is very usable and has a wide range of play between Mid OD to Marshall thrash. Ch 3 (Soldano SLO 100) brings back some of the low guitar frequencies that 'die off' in Ch 2. It is easy to make Ch 3 sound tasty, the knobs can point in a variety of directions and it never sounds too out of sorts. Plenty of gas in the tank to make a metal head give you the 'headbanging frown of approval' in my opinion. Finally the boost function- I find it to be less of a volume changer and more of a 'presence' boost (think 2khz or so as the other reviewer so astutely noticed : ) ) There is some added volume but be careful, as even if they claim it doesn't I still sense a little added saturation if you run the boost up to 12oclock- and I'm sure it gets more as you climb the boost knob. VERY servicable solo boost but if you are in a crowded FOH mix, they will probably still need to lift your solos a little on their end as well. (I'm still clinging to my old Mesa Road King where I can set the 'solo' knob to be a massive shot in the arm for leads I probably shouldn't be playing.)

All of this said- my final thought is that the Revolt is an absolute Banger and I am thrilled/thankful they did so well at $! You really find out how much color cheap dynamic mics and expensive condenser mics put on a tone when you use this in a studio setting. I used it for half of the last record I tracked (STRAIGHT IN I might add) and we were not lacking tonally. It covered all the needs with a clarity that cab mics don't (or don't easily) reach.

Good luck and happy hunting all!

fantastic foundation amp tones

By Paul from standing right behind you

I have to say when I first tried to listen to the headphone out on this I was thinking it was not very good, but when I rigged it up as I had planned as my basic preamp and amp sim foundation into my power amp it became rather extraordinary.
Just some great tones and completely marvelous unit. I use other boosts and whatnot into it and it works exactly as I had hoped. My Dept.10 into it gives me all the ranges of uber gains one could wwant or use. The unit itself has all three good channels and you can adjust them to have a great foundation platform to build on. Seems most I saw in the demos did not really understand the boost and how it is not a flat or colorless boost but imparts a clarity and mid peak around 2k to the tone so I found it best to have it on but one doesn't need but 9-11 o'clock, they were max'ing it out and really that is not the best tone. Unit works extraordinarily well as a foundation for other drives and gains. I am extremly pleased with it. It is exactly what I had wanted and planned on. By the way the genius demos guys who were showing the unit made me laugh when they did not even know how to shutoff and bypass the unit (you press both channel 1 and 2 switches together) although I can see why they did that as typically you are not going to want to shut it off. It is like killing your basic preamp tone and fidelity. So easy to get great amp tones and any level of usable gain. Everything I tossed at it worked great and sounded better. Two Notes is an amazing company.

Best of class in features, feel, tone and function

By Vermont B. from Johnson, VT
Music Background: Home recording enthusiast

I purchased the Revolt Guitar to use on my living room "upright" pedalboard. I am running it with a few pedals into headphones for silent practice and also for dialing in patches on my Eventide H9 to save for later use in my home recording studio. The feel, touch dynamics and response to compression are truly the best I've felt in any such pedal board amp, and I have tried the Quilter Superblock 45, Simplifier, UA Dream 65, Strymon Iridium, as well as several reactive loads on my tube amp. Love the Revolt. Interesting name - in French it means uprising, revolution, overthrow of tyranny. In English, it means to disgust, lol. Being of French descent, I enjoy it even more, because I get it, and it gets me. I actually purchased this on Amazon through Sweetwater's subsidiary Gear Nuts. Quick delivery, hassle-free interest free financing, and free returns within 30 days. Unbeatable convenience and service. Kudos to all involved.

A pedalboard go to

By Don from Malvern, AR
Music Background: 40 years playing, gigging musician.

This thing is insane with what it can do. I'm running it on a board with the Two Notes Cab M+, an SD solid state amp, and a TC Plethora X5 and that one rig can do almost everything I'll ever need. Two Notes never fails to deliver and Sweetwater makes sure I get it fast.

Utterly amazing!

By Matthew S. from Holland, MI
Music Background: Hobbyist, musician in training

My purpose behind buying the Revolt was to have a plug and play setup in my man cave that sounded good with a set of powered monitors. I wanted a simple setup and got way more than I bargained for. The Revolt is a powerful, powerful tool to achieve professional sound.

I got a couple Presonus 5 inch powered monitors, awesome by the way, plugged my guitar into the Revolt and hit a chord on the clean channel. I was rewarded by crystal clear, sweet tones that sounded great with all my guitars, including my ultra budget Harley Benton Les Paul. Added a little reverb and delay and spent the next hour playing every blues lick I know. Beautiful.

Moved on to the British Crunch channel and immediately reached for my Les Paul. I swear on everything Holy that when I dialed that thing to my liking it is a straight up near perfect Plexi sound. Normally I'm a big pedal guy, but honestly it sounded so good that I didn't even start adding any overdrive until the next day. Once I started incorporating my pedals I can get virtually any dirty tone you can think of from rock, metal, dirty blues, etc.

The modern lead tone is completely awesome. I originally thought to dial it in to a high gain rhythm tone but I liked it so much for lead that I only use it strictly for leads and leave rhythm to the British Crunch channel.

Though originally intended for just a simple setup, I plugged into the power amp section of both my Boss Katana mk2 head and my Blackstar tube amps to run through my cabs. Using it as a true three channel preamp section yielded incredible results. The clean channel becomes a perfect pedal platform while the other two just sound fabulous.

I was so beyond impressed with this unit I took it to show my guitar teacher. He runs his own audio/visual business and has forgotten more about dialing in tone than I'll ever know. When I ran through all three channels into his rig he was highly impressed. When I added the Two Notes Torpedo C.A.B. M+, I haven't even played through my cabs. I've been running direct into either my monitors and my Headrush powered speaker. The tones are just that good. Running through an amp and cabs is just the icing on the cake.

If you're on the fence about the Revolt, jump off, get one, and be happy. Believe me when I say you will be happy with this beast. I recommend getting the Torpedo CAB to go along with it. Put them on your pedalboard and you're absolutely ready to plug into house speakers or PA system. You'll have everything you need.

Tube swap brings Revolt to life

By Hadley K. from North Port, FL
Music Background: Retired Pro Guitarist (70yrs old)

I traded the stock Chinese PSVANE ECC83 out for a spare JJ ECC83S Gold Pin I had laying around and the result is a smooth and silky tone... I have used this tube in other gear before and didn't notice that much difference, however here it actually really makes a difference... It warms up everything (especially the Lead Channel) and totally gets rid of the fizzy edge while gaining clarity... I know you are probably thinking "placebo effect", but I do not think this is the case... I have it on my pedalboard replacing both a Bogner Uberschall and a Bogner LaGrange... I have a PRS "Mary Cries" optical compressor at the input and have it set to max compression with the level half way which is a slight boost... It is possible that I could have used one of my normal JJ ECC83S spare tubes and garnered the same result, but I am not experimenting with this unit further as I am in tone nirvana as it currently is... Anyway I totally recommend this unit - and recommend a quality tube swap to boot...

Compatibility Issues w-EHX MIG-50

By Richard N. from Charlotte, NC

Depends on how you use it

By Sweetwater Customer

I'll break this down into four use cases for this pedal:

1 - Direct to Audio Interface with IR: 5 stars. Using the balanced out into my audio interface at +4 dB, then applying an IR in my DAW, this thing sounds phenomenal. This is my preferred use case.

2 - Direct out to power amp and speaker cab: 3 stars. Running into a Fryette Power Station and a Mesa Mini Rec cab, I spent a lot of time fiddling around with EQ on both the ReVolt and the Power Station. I never could get a tone I was satisfied with. This may have a LOT to do with the speaker cab. Using a different cab might have made it easier to dial in a tone.

3 - Headphone out: 2 stars. It does not sound at all like an IR is applied; rather it sounds like an emulation and is too "direct" sounding (yes, the cab sim was switched on). Disappointing.

4 - Four-cable method: not tested. This would add channels to an existing amp. I imagine the power amp and speaker cab selection will have a huge impact on the sound so I would expect the experience to vary depending on which amp and speaker can it is paired with.

Overall - 3.5 stars. For my preferred use (Direct w/IR), this is a keeper. To use it live, find a good power amp and speaker cab combination. Don't bother with the headphone out.

Tone monster

By Brett M. from Germantown, MD
Music Background: Professional composer and multi-instrumentalist

This is the best sounding amp sim I've ever used, without question. It's pure analog, sound, with an actual tube providing some beautiful vintage British crunch as well as a more modern super saturated sound, great for lead parts. The clean sound is also to die for, it's perfect. I like also that each channel has a boost option, for that little extra bit you sometimes need. No built in FX, but has an effects loop, so you can easily include this on your board. I am using this with the CAB M+ cabinet sim/IR loader, it's the perfect combo for both studio recording and playing live, without the need for lugging around heavy amps and cabinet, dealing with setting up microphones, etc. I know other option like Axe FX, Kemper, Line 6 Helix, etc can do this also, but sometimes those things have too much stuff and setting them up can be overwhelming... and this is a much more affordable option and fits right on my existing pedalboard.

Great things do come in small packages

By Donald P. from Malvern, AR

A simply amazing piece of gear. I've owned the original Cab, and have a couple of Torpedo Lives and a CAB M+ and Two Notes blows me away every time I get my hands on their gear. If you really dig into the menu system and midi implementation you'll find it's pretty versatile.

Good Start With Room For Improvement

By Andy Z. from PA

Being a big fan of the Captor X and Wall of Sound Suite, I had high expectations for this product. The unit itself is extremely sturdy, and the clean and crunch channels are simply phenomenal with every guitar I tried them with. However, the third channel is extremely hit or miss. Depending on what type of guitar you use, this channel either sounds like you'd expect a high gain amplifier to sound, or a Fuzz Face. Some other small drawbacks to note is the balance output signal is extremely loud, and the headphone out is really quiet. Overall, I think it's a solid first attempt, with a lot of room for improvement.

Really quite a good deal

By Nic from Ohio

This is quite a good preamp for the money.

Packaging: the box and packaging is very nice. While the packaging doesn't speak at all to the tone, it does indicate a focus on overall quality, which is always a good sign.

Feature set: the form factor is comfortable and fits in my pedal board with ease. Having an effects loop is handy, and the direct out is a plus. The built-in cab sim is actually quite natural and sounds good to my ears. While this will be subjective, I think you'll find it will work for a lot of applications. OF course, you can always just run your own sims via software or pedal.

Clean channel: this is why I had to knock a half star. The clean channel needs a lot of tweaking to get what I would call an acceptable tone. I've found the baked in EQ curve is too aggressive and the EQ point is a lot more manageable with the EQ at about 9 o'clock each. BUT you can overdrive it with both just the internal boost and external boost. I also was pleased to hear that distortions pushing the front actually sound good and not choked like I've experienced with other amps.

British channel: comparing to another "plexi" pedal (named after local law enforcement), this sounds very, VERY close in tone. It's a little brighter in the right places and not harsh, and the gain and EQ both are responsive. Boosted, it sounds very hot rodded. It sounds great in the mix, and in comparison, requires slightly less EQ to sit in a mix the way I prefer for guitars.

Lead channel: I was happy to hear that the lead and british channels don't sound as similar as they did in the demos online. The lead has me conflicted for now, I did not like the way it sounded at first by itself, because it is a little fizzy in tone. BUT for the right style of music it can sound pretty cool. I don't know if it would be my lead tone for most things, but for an effect it could be great. I did think this one sounded great for more grindy rhythm playing as it makes mutes snap. I took a half star off for this.

Minor gripes - I do wish there was a dedicated on/off button, as using this in 4CM as additional channels makes switching back to the amp a little difficult. Even the ability to add an external switch to perform this function would have been nice. I'm not the type that uses headphones or aux ins for these things, but both work just fine. The headphone amp output is loud and clear for me. I'd trade both of those ports for a master on/off.

Overall: I will admit, I am picky about preamps, and 4/5 stars might be look critical on the surface, but I actually think this is a good pedal, and the primary thing is how it sounds in the context of a recording. All 3 channels are great for their respective uses, and for the current price, it would be an excellent tool. While the clean channel takes some work to get sounding right, and the lead channel is a little fizzy, both channels are in fact useful and can sound good. The plexi is great in my opinion (not for "how close to a real plexi it sounds" but more for the "this sounds good in the mix" sound).
