The RAT Tail Distortion cable boasts a 3-position switch at your instrument’s input — a very handy location. At its lowest setting, the cable is in true bypass mode, which doesn’t color your tone in the least. Click the switch up a notch, and you’re in distortion mode, which is great for adding extra grit to your tone. Click it up to its highest position, and the cable adds a 3dB boost to the distorted signal, which is ideal for taking your solos over the top.

We really ran the RAT Tail Distortion cable through its paces here at Sweetwater. During this rigorous testing, we compared it side by side with a RAT 2 pedal. Here’s what we found: the full-sized RAT pedal is a versatile beast. It covers all the ranges — overdrive, distortion, fuzz — it does it all. The cable, on the other hand, replicates the common practice of dialing down a RAT pedal’s gain and putting it in front of an amp as a dirty boost. The RAT Tail Distortion cable doesn’t supply full-on distortion like the pedal. Rather, it delivers just enough grit to make your already overdriven amp bark. It’s a cool sound, but if you’re trying to achieve the trademark RAT tone, then you’ll want the pedal.
