Excellent starter set

By Slip K. from Illinois
Music Background: playing drums for 60 yrs

I'm a drummer, playing since grade school. I have an acoustic set and electric set at home and all my grandson wants to do when he's over is play drums. I purchased this Pearl set for him on his 2nd birthday. He absolutely loves them! Working bass and high hat pedals is a bit of a too much of a reach but he's growing fast so it'll be fine before long and this set should last him into his early teens. Honestly I wasn't expecting high quality at this price point, but must say I'm quite impressed with these, the toms and snare sound pretty darn good with the supplied heads, and that little bass has some punch. The cymbals could be improved but I've got plenty of extras. I feel for the money spent this is a really good value. Assembly was fast and easy (though I've been doing that for years) I think even someone that has never put a drum head on will not find it too big of a challenge.
I'm going to give this a 5 star rating as I feel it's a great starter set, especially with some better cymbals added.
Also a 5 star for Sweetwater! Super fast shipping and ease of ordering. Quite pleased with everything.

Drums

By Sweetwater Customer

The 5 piece Pearl drum set is a nice product. I got the set to learn how to play. I have no musical background. I'm 44 years old, 5'4". This is a Jr set. The seat is not that comfortable but good for kids or small adults like me I actually switched the seat out. But overall not bad for practice. Took me about a week and a half to learn a beat now working on timing.

Pretty good drum set

By Ethan b.

This was my first drum kit ever. I got it when I was 6 years old and that's when I knew I was gonna play the drums forever and I have played since. A perfect kit for your first drum kit. Looking back now i think it's pretty bad because I've had it for 7 years the heads wear off quickly and the cymbals are pretty bad but when I was 6 it was the coolest thing I owned. Parents, buy this kit!

Big sound little box

By Quentin T. from North Carolina

Well made kit. It says Jr. on the box, but not a toy. I have a couple larger kits, and was looking for something a little smaller for quick gigs. Definitely impressed as soon as the box was opened. Quick easy setup. Everything you need right out of the box. Would recommend using Tune-Bot if inexperienced at tuning. I did switch out the heads for Evan Hydraulic heads. Wasn't a necessary swap, but the tone on those heads are incredible. Kit fitted perfectly in the backseat of a challenger. Would recommend for all levels. Actually just played it outside at a wedding gig. Used a couple Behringer BC1200 mics, quick easy setup.

I'm a lousy drummer so take what I say lightly

By Josh from New Jersey
Music Background: Best campfire guitar player ever

I'm a mediocre drummer at best. What I know, I learned when I was a teenager/early 20's playing in my old band.

My 5 year old son hounded me for drums for 3 weeks. I basically sought out a trusted name in the drums world and pulled the trigger after reading reviews myself.

First impression out of the box: the shells look nice. Seem to be solidly constructed. The finish is beautiful. The hardware is solid. There are no assembly instructions, but there is a video you can Google. It explains in 5 minutes how to assemble the drums. I think I had them altogether in just under an hour.

The bass drum is a little boomy. Most people would probably chuck a pillow in there to mitigate that. I haven't done that yet, but still sounds acceptable to my ears for practicing.

The smaller toms were pre-assembled. They're a little high pitched, so I tuned them down.

I think the drum heads are probably lacking a bit, but what do you expect for what's included. I'll replace them after my kid beats the snot out of them.

The cymbals are also meh, but everyone knows good cymbals cost good money.

The snare is pretty darn good. Exceeded my expectations.

Bass pedal is nice.

The included throne is nice.

If you're considering buying this, know upfront that (I believe) you are getting excellent shells, and excellent hardware.

If you want these things to really shine, new heads and cymbals will be needed eventually. What's included is good enough for the initial investment of seeing of your kid will actually stick with it.

If for some reason my house was robbed tomorrow, and all they stole were these drums, I'd def buy them again.

Awesome!!!

By Allen C. from Omaha, NE
Music Background: 20+ year bassist

Got this set for my kids since they're interested in music and wanting to be like me, I couldn't find any bass guitars to fit them so I figured I'd give them some drums to try out. Setting them up even as a non drummer wasn't too hard, a few YouTube videos on tuning them and they're sounding great. Definitely feels like a set that will last and not like a toy.

I bought a Pearl Roadshow JR and started a DIY electronic kit A2E conversion! kit is finished.

By Derek F. from Bellevue, NE
Music Background: almost 40 years of drumming, piano, DIY, and audio technology experience.

I took a few days to custom convert this lil' kit into a fully-functional electronic kit with better trigger technology than Roland or Alesis. Custom Piezo element soldering, wiring, cymbal and shell conversion the works!

while this project turned out awesome, I won't lie. THIS KIT IS CHEAPLY MADE!!

You can stip a tension rod without even trying so be VERY careful. Most times they don't even line up.

cheap made-in-china junk and I don't think PEARL even makes this kit as there's so many other kits just like it with the same parts on other sites etc. HOWEVER

It's still a great purchase if you're looking for a tiny/compact lil' kit for an A2E conversion.

If you want a compact kit, I'd not buy this one, even if it's for your kid! buy the smaller Pearl Roadshow 4 piece, or some other compact jr kit as these are REALLY physically cheap.

Great kit for young kids!

By Sweetwater Customer

This is not a toy, its a legit set (for a kid) that you would expect from Pearl. We received ours last Sunday and the setup was about 1.5 hours for an experienced drummer. Everything was packed very neat. My son is 8 years old and is loving it! I hop on it from time to time as well! It comes with everything you need... seat... sticks, drum key etc. We are very happy with this drum kit. The service from Sweetwater was excellent as well. Highly recommend, for the price you can not go wrong.

Tiny size big sound!

By james d. from Ocean springs, MS

Can't believe the sound for the size. Got this set for my two year old. Had our first jam session and I can't believe the sound quality. He can't reach the pedals yet but this set will last! Nothing but awesome reviews for niche our Sweetwater rep of four years now. Love the drums love Sweetwater!

Sweet Little Kit

By Patrick
Music Background: Music Producer & Engineer/multi-instrumentalist

I bought this kit for my 4 year old son for his birthday. This thing is gorgeous. I stop by and look at it everytime I walk passed my sons room. It's pretty much a mini version of a standard kit with all the bells and whistles. Very good quality. Sounds very good, especially the snare. I would use the snare in my kit. I pitched down the two rack toms that came tuned, they sounded like timbales. The foot pedals for the kick pedal and HiHat stand are a good size, they look like they're the standard size or close to it. I've been enjoying myself with it probably a little more than I should. Lol

Great buy and as always great service from my rep Aaron Regenold and Sweetwater!

Great for limited space.

By Trevor from Maine
Music Background: Drumming for 12 years

I recently moved into a small living space and could not bring my Pearl Decade Maple. I needed something to practice on and this fit the bill perfectly; price point and foot print. I'm a 6' 2" male, so I needed to upgrade the hardware (including drum throne) for it to be proper sized as this is a "junior" drum kit. After purchasing mesh heads, larger bass and floor tom legs, bass drum riser, and a set of Zildjian L80 cymbals, this kit is perfect for apartment practice. It took me about an hour to set up out of the box without instructions. I would recommend this to friends for themselves and their kids!
