Best choice

By Jim Elwyn from Missouri on June 1, 2023 Music Background: Semi retired pro

I own 3 short scale basses and have tried numerous brands of flats. The Roto monel flats are my first choice for strings. They fit better, play better and sound better than other sets. Save some time and money … just get these.

Great strings!!

By Edward Cannon on September 17, 2022 Music Background: former professional/recording artist

I was having trouble finding a good set of flatwound strings that I really liked for a short-scaled bass. Someone suggested that I try the Rotosounds. None of my local music stores carried them. Then I tried Sweetwater. Voila!! Great strings and excellent service. They arrived a lot sooner than I expected and are perfect for my short-scaled bass. Thanks, Sweetwater. I look forward to doing more business with you folks.

What a difference!

By Jan from East TN on April 14, 2022

I read the reviews on these Monel Flatwound strings and changed the strings that came on my beautiful Fender PJ short scale. I was having trouble both getting the tone I expected and also was only able to play for short periods of time before carpel tunnel on my right wrist stopped me. These are easy on the hands, sound great, and I now can enjoy playing. New to the bass and did not want to give up. Highly recommend these strings and thanks to the reviews from others that lead me to them!

Flatwounds!

This may be a personal preference, but I love the feel and the sound of flat wound strings on a bass guitar. They go together like a hand and glove. Why play anything else?

I just love these Monel Flat Wound Strings. They last and last & sound very warm with super easy slides.

Rotosound RS77S Jazz 77 Monel Flatwound Short Scale Bass Strings

By Ron Gardner from Delaware, Ohio on January 23, 2021 Music Background: Playing bass guitar since the mid 60's. Started in a high school garage rock band!

I recently installed a set of Rotosound RS77S Jazz 77 Monel Flatwound Bass Strings on my Gretsch short scale bass guitar. They appear to be of excellent quality and fit my guitar very precisely. They are of 40-50-75-90 dimension and play very well. A good lighter weight string if you have old arthritic fingers! So far so good. I highly recommend them for anyone who plays flatwounds and desires that old school 1960's deep warmer tone!

Love these flatwounds

By Bev from Indio, CA on November 24, 2020

Makes playing bass even more fun & easier on the fingers. They sound great & make my inexpensive bass sound more full & ready for action.

Classic Thump

By Sweetwater Customer on November 5, 2020

Great feeling and great sounding strings. I purchased these to put on a Squier Bronco, and they have improved its sound dramatically. It now has that low end thump short scale basses are known for. It's been hard to put it down since I changed to these strings.

First time user.

By Joe from South Jersey on April 29, 2020 Music Background: Gigging musician.

I have an Ibanez TMB30 bass that I really enjoy playing. IT feels so much like a guitar it's almost scary. Wanted to warm and fatten up it's sound more though so I gave these flat wounds a try. What a difference they made on this short scales overall sound. Fatter and deeper but still can pull up a nice bite when needed. The thing that was the strangest was getting used to the absolute smoothness of them. Have always used roundwounds and still do on my other bases but for my TMB-30 these are my new go to!

Rotosound short scale flatwounds for my Fender Mustang

By Christopher M. Listorti from CT on October 22, 2018

These strings sound excellent for the sound I want out of my bass. They feel and look great as well. Doug Wimbish turned me on to them when I met him years back. Used them ever since. I have regular scale Rotosound flatwounds on my Jazzz Bass as well.

Great sounding/feeling strings

By Joe McConaghy from Naples, Florida on April 26, 2018 Music Background: Lifetime musician, keyboards, bass guitar, vocals

The Rotosound jazz short scale bass strings sound great on my Fender/Jaguar short scale bass guitar. For a flat wound string, the sound Is very alive with a great presence. These strings are very useful for all types of music and especially for the blues and R & B that make up a great deal of my repertoire. As flat wounds, they are very smooth and easy on the fingers and seem to play faster than the round wound strings that came standard on the bass. For jazz, they sound very good and especially with a short scale bass, they are fast and smooth. They would probably be ideal as well for a fretless bass. Bass guitar is my second instrument, being primarily a keyboard player, so for those of us whose finger callouses are perhaps a bit underdeveloped compared to hard working full time bass players, the Rotosound RS77S Jazz Flatwounds are great way to go.

Beatles/Motown Sound

By Phil on January 2, 2018

Just got one of the new Fender Mustang PJ basses. I love the feel and sound of short-scale basses, but I didn't like the tone I was getting from the factory round-wound strings. I bought a pair of these and now I LOVE it. Use just the P pickup and you totally get the sound of Beatles and Motown (think "I Want You Back"). Thump for days.

A bit of warning...I thought I had to cut off some excess length when I got them, but now the strings only have one or two windings around the tuning pegs. The low E string is particularly troublesome. It doesn't have much tension on it, so it's very hard to precisely tune and doesn't have the right tone. I just bought a second set and won't cut the strings at all and it should be fine.

Another great experience

By Greg Burke from South Carolina on October 17, 2017 Music Background: Retired touring bass player

I received exactly what I ordered. Ryan responded to a question that I submitted and I ordered the strings instantly. I received extremely quick shipping and a perfect transaction. Then Ryan followed up to make sure that I was satisfied. I get a big kick out of the little package of sweets that is sent with each order. It may be something small to some but it shows you care.

Too Long for Hofner

By Marc Morgan from Yakima, WA on September 13, 2017

These strings are awesome for most short-scale basses. For those who have complained about their fit on Hofner basses, try the Labella Flatwounds that are made specifically for the Beatles Bass!

These Strings really bring the Bass

By Noah A. from Tennessee on May 23, 2017 Music Background: ro Audio Technician (concerts and professional shows), Bass Guitar player & Enthusiast

After purchasing a Fender Squire Short-Scale Jaguar Bass with stock [roundwound] strings, I was disappointed in the sound I was obtaining from the strings played through the guitar. After reading reviews of these flatwounds, I decided to go ahead and give these a try to make my bass more suitable to my taste...
Boy do these flatwounds make a difference! I was not getting nearly as much low end from my stock roundwounds as these! Along with a plentiful amount of Jazzy low-end, these flatwounds blew me away with the amount of attack they produced! A very impressive thumpy, solid, and clear attack (almost like in Jazz records). This is by far the cheapest, best sounding upgrade I could have made for my bass!

Strings that fit

By Sweetwater Customer on March 25, 2017

These fin my short scale Epiphone EBO like a glove. Love flat wound strings and these play great with a nice rich sound.

Great strings!

Turning junk into pretty good!

By Fred Schmidt from Lindstrom Mn on December 9, 2016

First, I know what you're thinking...This is likely the cheapest bass there is ... I know. I have a Epiphone EB 0. Came with round wound strings. sounded bad and played worse. they were also set a mile high. I installed these Roto Sound flat wounds and lowered them, ....what a difference. Plays really nice and sounds great too. Its just kind of a toy, but its a decent playing and sounding toy now!

The best IMO

By Rob F. from nh on December 7, 2015 Music Background: Rock, Blues, whatever for 40yrs.

I used these on my P Bass and J Bass. I was a little reluctant to use .040-.090 strings on my Allen Woody short scale bass. Don`t worry, they`re great! I love my old Fenders but that Epi with these strings may be my new #1 pick. It has just the right touch of a woody sound that rocks! Easy playing background or really aggressive. Easy on the fingers and never sticky. No more experimenting for me.

Get 'Em

Made my cheaper Squire Short Scale Bass sound twice as good. Best and cheapest upgrade you can make to the sound.

Went to flat wound over round wound...what a great mellow tone and silky feel.

Best of the class

By Steve Kuykendall from Jamestown, ND on April 6, 2014 Music Background: 40+ years of gigs in most styles

These were purchased for my short scale Fender and the net result has been a substantial increase in output, a more defined, up front attack than other flat wounds I've used and a tone that is simply more pure and beautiful !

Smooth and Light

By Phil Purdin from San Luis Obispo, CA on October 25, 2018 Music Background: Over 50 years pickin' and grinnin'.

While purchasing a short scale Squier Jaguar bass, I had Sweetwater install these strings and do a setup for me. I prefer the sound of flatwounds on bass so these were their go to set. A little lighter than I usually play, they are ultra smooth and a perfect tension for my new bass. No disappointments.

VERY NICE!

By Sweetwater Customer on July 17, 2018 Music Background: 50 years in and still going strong

Excellent short scale bass strings. May try heavier gauge later on. Right now they play and record out very well on my new Gibson SG Bass.

Perfect length, feel and tone for my short scale Fender bass. Quick delivery and top notch service provided by Sweetwater.

Rotosound RS77S Flatwound Short Scale Strings

By Serge on January 9, 2018 Music Background: Playing bass for decades.

Technically, a 32" scale bass is short scale. These are will fit 30" scale only (and will not fit my 32" scale bass). They may sound awesome, but I'll never know. I gave a 4.5 because I don't want to ruin it for the next guy.

Flat wound Bass Strings

By Sweetwater Customer on December 11, 2017 Music Background: Experienced Player

I don't know why round wound strings come on new Basses. I got a Fender a Mustang bass recently for the short scale and switched to these Rotosound strings and love them. 5 stars if the last well.

Short Scale Jazz 77

By David from Houston Area on May 30, 2017 Music Background: 40+ years of playing

These strings play and sound wonderful, however the short scale length is really short. I put a set on a friend's short neck hofner bass and the colored fabric came onto the neck's nut. barely long enough to work properly. Use caution when you are purchasing these, the regular length may be more desirable.

Smooth feeling strings

By David from Houston Area on April 10, 2017 Music Background: 40+ years of playing

These strings are very soft to play. Your fingers simply slide up and down the neck with ease. The sound is very warm. I strongly feel these are the best bass strings available. Sweetwater will get 'em to you quickly and at a good price.

Rotosound flatwounds

By Doug from Louisville, KY on November 25, 2022 Music Background: Former trombone player until 1967. Bass guitarist since 1964.

I've used Rotosound roundwound strings for years to get that John Entwhistle sound. I decided to try the flatwound 77s about a month ago and was pleasantly surprised with their sound. I've used them now with a Fender Jazz bass and Gibson SG bass and they work very well with these basses. Not necessarily the Entwhistle or Jack Bruce sound but very good.

Nice Strings...

By VonBach from Arkansas on July 19, 2020 Music Background: Faster Than The Speed Of Love

Haven't used them yet...sorry. Sent them to a friend for use on a new short scale Ibanez that came with round wound strings. She wanted to get away from that "piano sound" so we're trying these.
Nice package...right gauges

Not All That

By Sweetwater Customer on May 6, 2021 Music Background: Church musician

In spite of some of the reviews about these strings I decided to try them, mainly because of the light gauge. When I first put them on I was very disappointed. The G and D strings both sounded good; however the A string sounded more like a round wound than a flat wound string. To the other extreme, the E string just went "thud"; no musicality to it at all. 2 weeks later, the strings have settled in somewhat. The G and D strings still sound good, the A string has mellowed a little though it still sounds metallic, and the E string is sounding more musical, still not what I hoped. I will try some others before long.

Bad overtones on low E

By Jordan Sitkin from OAKLAND, CA on May 9, 2022

The tone of the A, D and G strings is great, however no matter what I did I could not rid the low E of an out-of-tune sounding overtone that muddied the sound. I replaced the strings with a set of La Bella Deep Talking strings on the same bass and now it sounds great.

Almost, But Not Quite

By Stew Simon from Detroit on February 20, 2018

Had bad E strings with two sets on two different basses.
Horrible odd overtones and trouble with setting intonation...

Be Advised - These are too short for Squier CV Mustang Bass

By Rick Hoffman from Ballwin, MO on April 16, 2024

These are supposed to be for 30" scale length basses (which the Squier Mustang Bass is listed as 30" scale length). However, the wrapped part of the strings end up resting in the nut and over the fret board. Looking on line, it appears that others have had the same problem with RotoSound short scale bass strings. This really sucks because now I can't use my bass until I get a different set of strings.

I think this is my first disappointing purchase with Sweetwater. I hope it's my last.

SNAP!

By Holly R. from Phoenix on May 4, 2021 Music Background: Bassist for 50 years

DO NOT USE on the Ibanez Mikro GSRM20 short-scale bass guitar! The G-string will break at one step below proper tune. I tried 2 sets with the same result.

Rotosound Jazz Bass strings

By Tommy Hart from Smyrna, TN on November 15, 2017

I have never been able to get theses strings to stabilize or not stretching. They are terrible. They are currently in the trash can.

Seriously...

By Julian Romero from Santa Ana, CA on August 12, 2017

With my first time trying these strings, I am very disapointed. I bought these strings for my Hofner bass. The feel of these strings feels nice. However, with regards to the Low E string, it is by far too short. The silk wrapping goes right past the nut about half an inch. This just cause anoying muffled and detunned sound with this particular string. The rest of the strings sit perfectly fine a line up perfectly together. I have a feeling that maybe I just got a deffective set of strings. This has been my second attempt with trying to find short scale bass strings that I will at least be satisfied with.
