Yamaha Recording Custom Brass Snare Drum - 5.5 x 14-inch - Brushed Reviews

5.5" x 14" Brass Snare Drum with 1.2mm Beaded Shell and 2.3mm Triple-flanged Hoops

Yamaha's Recording Custom snare drums have been at the heart of countless records since the late '70s. And now, thanks to a partnership with session icon Steve Gadd (Paul Simon, Steely Dan), these snares are better than ever. Each Recording Custom represents a different generation of some of the most celebrated metal snares in the industry. Choose from the dark intensity of brass, the dynamic woodiness of aluminum, or the cutting crack of steel (each sold separately). Shells are expertly formed to just 1.2mm thick with an external center bead — a first in Yamaha's history — and treated to a sumptuous brushed finish with updated lugs and an offset badge.

Sweet Snare

By Claudio Sanchez from Menifee, CA. on April 2, 2024 Music Background: Advanced Drummer and Band Member

My newest favorite snare. I used the optional 10 strand snare springs and the Remo Ambassador top and bottom heads. Amazing sound that cuts through the other band instruments. My fellow bandmates all commented on its quality sound and attractive brassy finish. Very pleased with the price and quick delivery. I read a lot of reviews and researched brass snares and Yamaha along with Steve Gadd have produced a great snare drum without breaking the bank. Very pleased with this purchase.

Warm, wide range & superb build

By Erik from Indianapolis on May 18, 2021 Music Background: Country

If you want something lower-pitched & warm, but still has good sensitivity & musicality, this is it. I tightened up the reso just a little bit m & put a CS black dot on the batter. Open sounds, with a good slap and, with the snares at medium loose, good jangle for the Nashville shuffles.

The hardware, especially the strainer, is top-notch. The drum sounds fantastic with brushes/bundles as well. You can really crank it up and retain a good low-end. Worth every penny.

It’s amaaaazing

Tighten up the bottom head nice and tight and tune the top head medium and this snare cracks so good! The rimshot is killer as well with a beautiful warm ring from the brass shell. I'm currently playing in a rock band with this snare but I imagine it could be great in any genre of music. Also something cool to mention, it comes with the Steve Gadd snare wires which is like 12 wire I'm pretty sure. With those on you get plenty of sizzle but also you hear more of the tone from the brass shell. I still have the 20 strands on right now though I might try the Steve Gadd wires soon. Sweetwater shipping was super quick. If you are looking for a brass snare, look no further. This snare is top notch!

Yamaha Recording Custom Snare

This snare has exceeded my expectations in playability and sound. I could not be more pleased with my purchase.

Incredible Snare

By Austin from Ohio on May 23, 2019 Music Background: Drummer

Honestly, I've never thought it was necessary to spend more than $600 on a snare drum. This snare is the perfect example of that. It has a ton of tone and crack and cuts through any mix you could imagine. I like to leave it wide open with no muffling at a medium high tension and the rim shots sound INSANE. It's got a great tuning range in general. Sounds great with muffling on it too if that's what you like!

Sounds great with the snares on and off. I haven't gotten a chance to try out the Steve Gadd 10-strand wires it came with yet.
