Sequential Prophet Rev2 16-voice Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer Module Reviews

16-voice Analog Synthesizer Module with Per-voice Dual DCOs, Sub-oscillator, and 2/4-pole Resonant Lowpass Curtis Filters; Bi-timbral Operation, Waveshape Modulation, Onboard FX Engine, Polyphonic Step Sequencer, OLED Display, and USB

Sequential ups the ante (again) with a module version of the REV2, the 16-voice analog synthesizer that takes over where the legendary Prophet '08 left off. The REV2 is an absolute beast that boasts dual DCOs, a sub-oscillator, and a 2/4-pole resonant lowpass Curtis filter per voice. Other features include bi-timbral operation, waveshape modulation, a beefy onboard FX engine, an advanced polyphonic step sequencer, a crisp OLED display, and USB. Synth geeks here at Sweetwater are excited about Dave Smith Instruments' REV2 module. Dave has delivered another killer synth — and it's an amazing value.

Seriously underrated synth

By David H. from OAKLAND, CA

Bought this about 5 years ago and was thinking about selling since it was basically collecting dust. I get NGB (new gear brain) sometimes and during one of my NGB episodes I was looking at the Prophet 6 thinking the grass is lowkey greener. And yeah if you specifically want *that* filter sound (and the first-class high pass filter) then you'll probably be happier with the Prophet 6 or 10?

Reason I personally was looking at the Prophet 6 with envy was that Rev2 just feels sooo dense sometimes. I never really put in the time to learn the Rev2 and every time I pulled up presets it would take me 5 minutes to turn off some weirdo lfo that was ruining the otherwise great sound. The A/B layer definitely doesn't make it easier.

I was watching some of Anthony Marinelli's stuff on youtube and kind of re thought how I was using the synth. I have a million billion awesome sounding presets on Serum. I started just going to the prophet and setting the init patch. No layers, one oscillator. I even mapped the filter to the volume envelope so it was kind of a Juno-style synth. Set to a square wave and started dialing in PWM with the aux envelope. Dude. There's a million variations of just synth bass in this thing. And you can really build super dynamic, Dave Smith sounding patches without getting too deep in the matrix. I like that it's there if I need it though. Like it really feels limitless.

Maybe it's just that this was the synth I had when I really started understanding from an artistic level how to use analog sounds (insert second shoutout to Anthony Marinelli). I've always been a "find a preset and tweak" guy but I think there's something to be said for sticking to classic analog sounds and just dialing them to fit in the track. Rev2 excels at that and I'm having the most fun I've ever had with an analog unit on this thing.

Prophet Rev2 desktop

By Dan M.

This is an amazing polysynth in a compact package. The stackable and bi-timbral modes make this a very flexible instrument. The addition of a sequencer and built in effects rounds out this full featured Prophet synthesizer.

Many possibilities but could have been better in quality

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Noodler

1) Dave Smith synth
2) 16 voices
3) the vast user-friendly, easily-assignable modulation and lfo options

If you're doing research on this synth I'd check out some videos of JP3O and listen to what he can make this thing do! There are lots of options and hours will definitely melt away. It does have a 'cleaner' sound and is modern but there are ways to dirty up the sound so I wouldn't let it discourage you. Get some fun mean sounds with the Rev2s DCOs if you run it thru some gnarly distortion pedals! I got the 16 voice but after almost a year I found I wouldn't have been troubled had I gotten the 8 voice so something to think about for sure.

I had a minor thing I needed addressed by Sequential (focusrite) support. They did address what was needed but it wasn't the best experience. I'm sure it was a one-off situation so no biggie.
While this synth wasn't for me — I absolutely know there are others that can really utilize this incredible instrument in amazing ways.

It doesn't quite have the low end I was looking for, I found that I prefer VCO's compared to the Rev2's DCO's.

While I don't regret getting it I do regret the hiccup with the support and sucks that I've since sold it for way less than I could have sold it for (due to the background situation that required support) even tho it didn't have any defects/issues when I sold it I figured nobody would want to buy it for its rightful fair price if it had any support ticket history. So I begrudgingly sold it for wayyyy less to be fair and because i was ready to move on.

Sweetwater is great and I will always return as a Sweetwater customer. If you are thinking of getting the Rev2 get it from Sweetwater!

Excellent Update to an Amazing Synth!

By Brian H. from Woodbridge, VA

The Prophet Rev2 module is awesome. I"ve owned a Prophet "08 and there is a bit of extra character in the Rev2. The Sub Octave is not as "in your face" as found in the Tetra and Mopho. The addition of the 64 step polyphonic sequencer is awesome, although I do miss the LEDs on the "08 for the gated sequencer. Editing is breeze as always and I appreciate having the 4 banks of user presets in addition to the factory ones. Currently there is no separate manual for the desktop version so some of the shortcuts and button presses differ than what is explained in the included manual (like Initialize Patch for example). Overall I"m super pleased with this and expect many years of joy and discovery from this synthesizer. As always Sweetwater service was amazing. Tom always makes sure I get my toys in time for weekend jams!

Nothing Short of Flipping Glorious

By James S.
Music Background: Sound Designer for Mobile Games & VR Experiences

I've been working with synthesizers for over 25 years, and this was my first Prophet. Beyond the build quality and excellent design, I was floored in particular by two things.

First the filter has an extremely unique character with magical 'sweet spots' that occur from finding the right resonance and filter envelope settings. Sweeping the filter with higher resonant settings to find those sweet spots and then designing your filter envelopes to hit those areas at different points in time yields some amazing results.

Second, the modulation is crazy flexible. I found myself coming up with ideas and easily executing them with all the available routing slots. Great sounding patches just about fall out this thing. In fact, I found myself saving incremental stages of each patch design to different slots just to explore other avenues later (because so many great sounds occur along the way to a planned destination).

There are many other fantastic features that make this thing both intuitive and addictive as an instrument, but right now, I just want to get back to playing it!
