I have no experience using any equipment like this before and it was quite easy and fun to get most of the basics and effects. Still learning about the memory mechanics but it seems pretty straightforward. This is an incredible piece of equipment. Im very pleased and impressed with it. Thank you

Not for Professional Performance

By Narayan from USA
Music Background: Professional live/studio musician

This product Freezes at any moment! Must unplug to make it work again. Any unsaved music is deleted.

The Mark Back(undo/redo) option for tracks does Not save correctly. It combines all tracks as One after saving it. Cannot even undo!

The input effects and tracks effects do Not turn on and off effects everytime. One must mess around with turning everything off & on and levels to zero etc to get it to work again. Can NOT depend on a correct sound. Will kill your sound and flow of show; very unprofessional.

NOT a professional tool to depend on for live looping shows.
Great fun TOY for the home; if it was $200 max!
Will return this ASAP.

RC-505 Hands free.

By Damon from Sacramento CA

I bought the rc-505 before the rc-600 came out so you should see which best fits your needs. Being a guitar player, I needed a hands-free solution. Since the RC-505 speaks MIDI it has worked well for me. I originally set it up with a Behringer FCB1010, but later switched to the Nektar Pacer for its added functionality.
I really liked that I could play 1 track while recording another, making it the perfect practice tool.

Had mine over a year and love it.

By Zach from Los Angeles
Music Background: Artist, Producer, Songwriter

I bought this from Sweetwater and the shipping was flawless as usual. I did research on the bugs in the first few firmware versions, but after it seemed to stabilize and the youtubers I followed said it was working well now, I went for it. I had an original RC-505 for a while but sold it. So I can compare the two a little. And overall, while there are tradeoffs going with the new one (lack of input gain knobs being the main one) I whole heartedly think mkii is better. The sound quality on it is way better too.

So for my live performances, I don't need a mixer now, because it has 2 mic inputs, 2 stereo or 4 mono instrument inputs and 6 outputs plus headphone out. The output routing is very flexible in so much as routing a particular input to a particular output, or which track goes to which output. You can not include things in the main output such as the rhythm/metronome, but you can't adjust the volume of individual inputs/tracks differently in the main and headphone outputs, but dealing with that is still better than lugging around another mixer.

The range of effects you have at your disposal is vast. I was very happy to see parametric EQ, compression, and noise suppression all included for each input discreetly and simultaneously. Then separately, you have the input fx which are actually really high quality. I've extensively used the G2B (guitar to bass), stereo chorus, synth, electric, transpose, and delay effects. And for the track effects, I mainly use the beat repeating ones. I kind of wish you could hear the track effects as you're recording, but you can't until the recording is finished. Then still yet, you have master effects which I have to say I was excited to have a master limited and compressor, but I get a phasing artifact when I have them on, so I can't use them. (I'm not taking a star away for that). The core functionality of the unit is totally stable.

I've recently started using a nectar pacer midi foot controller with it. I can mostly get away without one, but if I'm really trying to minimize the time I let a loop play before overdubbing, I need to use my foot to start recording or turn on/off a track. I still don't regret going with the 505 over the 600, because I still think I'd want the midi foot controller with the 600. The 505 has vastly more hands on controls than the 600.

There is quite a learning curve to using one of these creatively. But I do think it pays off as a solo performer to be able to use it on a few of your songs and keep the audience from getting bored.

My Experience

By DUSTIN S. from Black River, NY
Music Background: Music Producer for Movies

I recieved the unit quickly. Sweetwater has always been beyond amazing and very helpful. As far as the unit. The setup was easy straight forward. I like the build of the unit. Feels solid. A little bit of a learning curve for navigation and programming loop settings for my style. No big deal. My problem with the unit is this. I had two of these units and both of them froze in mid performance. Multiple times. I lost a 1200$ gig due to it's issues. Only way to fix was to unplug. Called BOSS directly. They had me backup my files. And update firmware for the 4th time smh. By doing this I lost everything. All loops were gone and the unit acted like it factory reset. And BOSS was unable to understand why the unit would not let me transfer the files back onto the unit. Beyond pi$$&! At this point. Called BOSS again they can't explain it. I do not recommend this piece of gear. There have been no updates or anything to fix the issues. And hundreds of cases worldwide with the same issues. I usually don't like to give harsh reviews. But I deeply regret my purchase. I will be returning the unit again. Beware. It may happen to you. It may not. Just keep this in mind. The unit is not stable.

Fun in a box

By David C. from Chepachet, RI

I got this device to help me land a tricky beatbox session. I had the rhythm in my mind, but every time I pushed record in my DAW, i'd fall apart. I took this device out of its box 4 hours ago, and I kid you not, Ive already recorded the most incredible rahzel level beatbox champ of the world sounding FIRE FLAME, ever... Im talking, worlds dopest beatbox in the planet, hands down. I video'd myself using the device, and the playback was incredibly cringe. there I was, headphones on Whispering into the mic, making wild jerking noises, airplane swooshes... I looked like a complete fool... but i loved it.

Those sporadic beeps and boops, the mouth guitars, even the weird groaning thing at the end, it came together to make beautiful music.

This device is a 10 out of 10.
Buy it. Buy it twice.

Monster of a looper

By Glenn from NC
Music Background: Hobbyist player of multiple instruments with hopes of writing at least one good song.

I am still very new to this MK2 looper and it is a beast. The options are overwhelming. It will take me a while to figure this out and be able to use all its capabilities. Out of the box, I was able to create several loops and they turned out great but it is a little different than my RC-500 looper. Getting my timing correct after first loop was a little off putting at first but finally started getting the hang of it. I had to start very simple with vocal counting into the mic (1,2,3,4) until I started hitting it correctly on all 5 channels. I have used the effects sparingly so far as I am trying to adapt to this new piece of gear. The biggest issue I have is the instructions and reason I left off a star. It explains the menus and buttons but there is nothing really intuitive on how to tie it all together. Videos/tutorials are still rather hit or miss with the MK2. There are plenty of videos for the 505 MK1 but not the MK2 and they are different in a lot of ways. I am running version 1.21 and so far have not ran into any problems. All this thing needs is better instructions and tutorials for noobs like myself. Right now it is trial and error on my part to figure out what works and what does not. I am going to purchase a midi pedal in the near future for my guitar and violin playing. This was an expensive purchase for me but think it will pay off in the end after much research.

Beatboxer's Paradise

On day one of owning this I was able to make awesome complex beats with ease. So many possibilities with the ability to add input effects and output effects to each track. If you're thinking about getting this, stop thinking - just get it!

Wait! Don’t buy the mark2. Yet.

By Professaa from Portland, OR
Music Background: singer-songwriter, electric harmonica

The audio quality of the RC-505mk2 is so much better than the original - more headroom, more clarity, more volume range. The individual EQ preset for each input is great…but they released this machine before they worked out major bugs.
And then, even after 2 firmware updates (as of July2022), there are still weird bugs. The Boss Tone Studio software, that must be used for 'puter to looper transfers, is clunky and not reliable - on my iMac, anyhow - and it looks like it's still an early 2000's version.
Wait for at least one more firmware update - especially if you want do serious live looping. There's a major glich when you make short loop, ala a quarter note or half note loop. This is a common trick for loop artists in the mark 1. In the mark2, so far, a short loop wil degrade into horrible noise over a minute or so. This one of several unfortunate problems in the machine. I've owned the mk2 for months, and still won't play out with it.
I would love to mothball my 505 mk1, and use the far superior audio of the mk2, but I am gonna wait for Boss to release hopefully another bug-fix firmware update that will make the machine usable in a live situation..
I suggest you check the Rc-505 FB pages for news on updates…and the problems loopers are having with the mk2. This is NOT the review I wanted to write.
C'mon, Boss/Roland, fix this machine.

A looper that does so much!

By GRK from Midwest USA
Music Background: Virtually none, LOL; but, I am learning. Retirement can be fun. So it is me, my large Eurorack Modular Synth, ASM Hydrasynth Deluxe, Behringer Deepmind 12, and many software synths on a Mac OS with a NI Kontact Komplete S61 MK II keyboard and Ultimate s

I have always wanted to incorporate a looping device into my synthesizer setup; but, did not know where to turn to until I started listening to Reinhardt Buhr in Cape Town, South Africa. He is an absolute virtuoso at looping compositions using guitar, synth, electric cello, drum pads, didgeridoo, and a shofar in his compositions performing live which is known as "busking". It is amazing what he can do with these instruments and his voice using the Boss RC-505 MK2 and a looping pedal. He is on Bandcamp at https://reinhardtbuhr.bandcamp.com/.

So this was my introduction and motivation for trying looping myself. Now it is me and the new Boss RC-505 MK2 on another journey up the music learning curve.
