It’s an active Ray on a budget.

By Tom V. from Texas
Music Background: Wannabe Extraordinaire

Fit and finish are what you'd expect for a bargain instrument. I'm not the biggest fan of satin necks, but it's a beefy c shape and comfy. The electronics and hardware are pretty great. It is hoped to find where they cut corners for the price point on this.

Out of the box it does not sound like a stingray; this is because the Pick Up is wired in series while the original is in parallel. If you open it up and find a 4 conductor pick up this is a super easy mod to do and voila! Stingray tones.

Best bass I've owned.

By Randy from BELLINGHAM, WA

After careful research, I chose the Stingray RAY4. Terrific bass, solid build, plays great, with great tonal variety.

So versatile and great build quality. Maybe the best budget bass around?

By Michael from New York
Music Background: Gigging Bassist

I love my RAY4 in this beautiful finish. It sounds amazing, records well, and can do A LOT of famous tones like Flea, Rage, etc. Awesome for rock! I also put a low pass on it and it is a DUB MACHINE!

If you are on the fence (and Sweetwater has one in stock) just get it!

Amazing.

Workingman's Bass

By James H. from Cape Cod, MA

Stirling by Music Man Stingray Ray4

I am reserved and do not review anything usually. I have a good stable of bass guitars and I like to do setups, repairs, finishing and builds. I bought this bass as a "mod-platform" project. Anyhow, when I got this bass out, it was in perfect tune. I know that is meager but, it tells me the tuners held their tune since the last setup. The wood and stain are a warm burgundy that does not pop yet, it is reserved and conservative like a good piece of furniture. The body is Basswood, not too dense or heavy. It is in the middle of my heavy basses and my light basses. Due to the 3&1 tuner configuration, the bass is not neck heavy. It feels good to hold and comfortable like my favorite jeans. Although I have a selection of maple, rosewood, or ebony fingerboards, I have always liked the feel of rosewood. This Jatoba fingerboard, looks and feels like rosewood. Sonically, it is not too bright or muddy for it's particular tone. Fit and finish are wonderful. There are no "fret sprouts", no dead spots on the fretboard. It is an attractive bass! I plugged it into my Ashdown CTM100 for the first time to hear it through a valve amp. Although the amp has input for an active guitar, I just put it in the conventional input. Reviews of this bass on other forums report that "the ceramic pickup is too hot", the "…two-band pickup is the same as on the RAY24!" I had no problem with the pickup as it is just right for classic rock. Through my amp, this bass made the room shake and drop a few pictures. It dials up any tone that I want. It is perhaps the best bass for your money. At this time, the only mod I have done is to put an Albridge case aluminum bridge on it. I like them because they are fat, light and transfer vibrations through the wood. It makes the bass growl. I might do the pickup, but it is not a priority. I would want to push the mids more with a replacement pickup. So… my recommendations? Get this bass…. It is the Goldilocks bass! It is your "workingman's bass!" It can be all that you ever need…. and then some…

Right place, right time

By RC C. from Glendale Az
Music Background: Home recording, hard rock/metal, I do everything but the drums, Boss DR-670's a great drummer, don't drink/smoke & always on time.

Purchased this bass for $ on a scratch/dent deal. Never noticed any flaws on the bass. Since then I've recorded many songs with it as it's my main bass for recording. Feels, sounds & most important, plays great! Gotta mention Zac Coleman, always makes sure I get my gear fast & that I'm happy with it. I buy all my gear exclusively through Sweetwater for well over a year now. No need to shop anywhere else, cheers!
