4-string Electric Bass with Mahogany Body, Maple Neck, Rosewood Fingerboard, 2-band Active Preamp, and 1 Humbucking Pickup - Toluca Lake Blue

The StingRay Classic RAY24CA revives the original StingRay Classic for today’s players. This bass is loaded with vintage-correct appointments that make you feel like you’re back in the ‘70s. It features a vintage-style flat slab mahogany body for resonance and midrange warmth. The body is loaded with an H-1 humbucker with a ceramic magnet for a high-output tone with a strong treble response. Meanwhile, you also get a 9-volt active preamp for tons of headroom and a 2-band EQ for simple tone-shaping. The body is bolted to a hard maple neck with a vintage-style nut width. Measuring in at 38mm, the nut is slightly narrower than normal — a feature that bassists here at Sweetwater really appreciate. If you’re looking for your new favorite bass, check out the StingRay Classic RAY24CA.

Better Than Some US Rays

By Benjamin

Just bought this and sold my US made EBMM Ray. Don't even regret it. This thing plays better and feels better. A simple mod or two and you can get the same tone anyways. I use pedals so the tone is totally fine for me. I got one with a beautiful fretboard and a nice heavy body. No neck dive at all. The neck still seems nice and strong though. I accidentally wacked my elbow on it and it wasn't so funny. The bass was undamaged of course, but my funny bone took a good shot. So far I raised the action a little, and tightened down the back screws the slightest bit. No need to do anything else, because this thing rocks. Thank you Sweetwater!

Extremely pleased!

By Brian E. from Austin, TX
Music Background: local shows and light touring

I've had my StingRay RAY24CA bass for about a month and I'm waaaaay beyond pleased with it. The glowing online reviews and videos sounded too good to be true, but they were actually spot-on. Here comes another one...

This instrument looks absolutely fantastic. It's a serious salute to the original '76 StingRay bass. It feels and plays excellent under the hands. It's a tiny bit heavy, but certainly no problem. Mine is 9lb. 7oz. The price can't be beaten (seriously-you won't find a comparable bass at this $ price-point). I've handled dozens of comparables, but this is the clear winner for me. The quality is truly impressive. Every inch of this thing is solid. I can't see where Sterling skimped or cut corners on any parts or pieces. Chrome is perfect. And, the best for last, the various tones this bass produces are INCREDIBLE! This thing will hold its own, anywhere, any time (ala: Joe Dart). Obviously, a lot depends on your amp set-up, pedals etc., but in my case, I give this bass 10 of 10 on tone. Will I change the pick-up and pre-amp? -- of course I will. But hey, that's just me. LoL!

Great Guitar!

By Samuel S. from Tualatin, OR
Music Background: Worship Band

I've always played Jazz basses but I wanted to try something new. I was looking for an active bass with retro looks and this one fit the bill. It plays like a dream and the pictures don't do it justice. It's a very nice looking instrument. If you're not a pro and therefore not interested in paying a lot for an instrument this is the bass for you. I play each weekend in a worship band and this is perfect for me. Sweetwater's customer service was excellent (as always) and the bass came ready to ply out of the box. Thanks!

Intended to be a nod to the classic 70s 'Ray...not quite

By James C. from Strafford, MO
Music Background: Playing bass since 1990: live music and studio work

This bass is very nice for the price! Relatively light weight, great fit and finish on all parts. The bridge and tuners are pretty dang good for this price point. The classic 2-band preamp sounds good and has plenty of variety in tones. No problems with the frets, and the action out of the box was right where I like it. As an aggressive player, super low action results in too much fret buzz that annoys me. This action was perfect for me.

The 70s Stingrays had a pickup that had Alnico magnets. This pickup has ceramic magnets. Does it work? Yes. Is it the correct pickup for a what they are trying to produce? No. Also, the pickup should be wired in parallel. It is not. It is wired in series. A quick fix for someone handy with a soldering iron, like myself, but not technically correct for what they were shooting for.

I fixed the parallel wiring situation and there was a noticeable, and expected, drop in volume. I will most likely replace the pickup with the correct Alnico magnet pickup. The preamp, for now, seems very nice for what it is intended to do.

Overall, I am very happy with the bass. It scratches my desire for a classic 2-band Stingray without the devastation to my bank account. The tort pickguard had to go (tort does NOT belong on blue!), the pickup rewired for parallel and straplocks added, but so far I am very happy with it!
