AtlasIED QR-2 Quick Release Microphone Stand Adapter Reviews

Quick Release Adapter for Atlas Sound MS10C, MS10CE, MS12C, MS12CE, or Similar Microphone Stands

The Atlas Sound QR-2 microphone stand quick release adapter is serious touring timesaver. When every second before the show counts, the QR-2 is absolutely invaluable. The way the QR-2 works is extremely simple. Just attach the base into the threads of your mic stand base (we know it works with the Atlas Sound MS10C, MS10CE, MS12C, and MS12CE). Next, attach the other end to the stand itself. Once you've set up the QR-2, breaking down and setting up your microphone stands takes only seconds. You're going to love the convenience and ease of use the Atlas Sound QR-2 quick release adapter gives you!

Awesome concept, great for reducing stage space area

By F
Music Background: Guitarist/Vocalist

PROS:
-reduces space on stage by using this along with a pedalboard mount
-nice locking mechanism with Atlas mic stands

Cons:
-not universal, needs to be used with an atlas mic stand (which is a bummer as I have plenty of mic stands I could have used instead of buying a new one for this!)
-not 100% firm, has some slight wobble, this is a non issue, and possibly a side effect of using this on a pedal board as the mounting point

Broke with very little use

By Eric H. from GA

First, I want to say that Sweetwater is great. I just wanted to follow up on this product. The adapter failed. Since I am out of the Sweetwater warranty, I reached out to the manufacturer. They communicated within hours to asked for additional information. After I didn't hear from them for days. I just sent an email following up on the warranty claim. They replied almost immediately to tell me that it was out of the 1- year warranty. I think it speaks to the quality of the adapter as I never abused it and only used it about once a week.

Off-brand use, but still serviceable

By Sweetwater Customer

I affixed this to a generic round mic-stand base. The threads don't screw in all the way, but enough that the mic stand I have is stable and usable. There's still a little bit of a twist you have to give it to make sure the locking mechanism engages but it's still far quicker to set up then trying to screw in the stand.

GREAT IDEA !

By bruce m. from Crown Point, In.
Music Background: Sound Engineer

This is a great invention. I remove base quite often and protecting threads is important. The price of a Tap or Die to repair threads is more than the stand itself. This stand adapter will protect internal and external threads. I would recommend this product to anyone being that situation. Regards Bruce McKee

Great device

By Sweetwater Customer from Texas
Music Background: Post-nuclear acid bluegrass gospel sex-punk singer-songwriter and part-time jazz guitarist.

I have floor mount mic base mounted to a custom pedalboard. The quick disconnect makes setup a breeze. Based on a previous review, I soaked the base in Coca Cola overnight and lubricated it with WD-40. It was tight, but installed with no problem. The mating end that threads on to the mic stand works like a big Dunlop Strap-Lok. Works great!

Quick Mic Set Up.

By Bryan from Nashville

The durability and quality are great. It's wonderful to be able to just pop the mic stand in and out without having to worry about a base or tripod taking up space. My only reason for not giving it a perfect 5, is that even when tightened down, there is a bit of movement that comes from where the joint goes into the base. It's about 95% stable. But I'd still buy more and use them.

Great product!

By Paul E. from Doral, FL

I use this to mount a mic stand in my pedalboard that has a base integrated to it (custom made) It has been working for sometime now. So far so good!!

Great little accessory

By Mike from Michigan

Bought these for my shorter round base mic stands to make setup/breakdown/transport easier. Atlas round base stands are terrific but a major pain to unscrew when it's time to pack up and travel. These little guys are very solid and well made...typical Atlas quality. No wobble, at least on my shorter stands. Not sure how they would work on taller stands. Wish they made them for the MS20 series!

Okay... So

By Allan from Oklahoma City, OK
Music Background: Performer

It does exactly what it's says, but it doesn't say that it's super wobbly. I like the solid feeling of the Atlas stand the way it is, and this kind of undoes all that... A great idea, but not as good as you'd think

Very Solid Piece

By John H. from United States
Music Background: recording engineer, musician

OK, so here's the deal. I ordered this piece from Sweetwater because their service is always top notch and they carry a lot of Atlas Sound's products...among the very best for mic stands. As always the adapter arrived promptly and the price was (of course) competitive. What I wanted to do here was to mount the adapter on a 3/4" thick plywood keyboard shelf that sits on my organ, so a boom stand could be mounted/dismounted. After years of hassling with booms needing a very heavy base to prevent tipping (although, Atlas' boom stands have been by far the best), I wanted a convenient solution that also would make my rig more compact.
The Atlas QR2 is a beautifully machined piece, made entirely of steel and finished in what appears to be a black anodized coating. If you know something about machining, you will immediately appreciate the quality and the price! Here's where the rub comes in. The QR2 upper "male" section is supposed to lock with the three steel balls popping into machined recesses in the lower "female" section. Releasing it is as simple as pressing down on the upper sliding ring. The problem is that you can also release it by simply rotating the mic stand shaft that's screwed into it with not much pressure/torque, and then simply lift the mic stand out. For my application, the keyboard shelf has a slight angle on it (about 10 degrees or less). This slight angle with a boom arm attached is enough to rotate the boom by the very slight force of gravity alone and release the upper section! In other words, even the slight angle of the upper keyboard shelf makes it impossible for the boom arm to stay in place. Even when mounted in the normal way as part of a regular mic stand, it would take very little pressure to rotate the stand and release the locking balls. Because of leverage, it becomes MUCH easier with a boom arm attached to a mic stand. The whole locking system is pretty much "besides the point" when you can simply (and very easily) twist and lift the stand to release/decouple it.
Since there is a lot of depth to the female/male attachment, I was able to modify the QR2 to work perfectly. I punched out the drift pin that holds the sliding ring mechanism and removed all of it from the upper male end. The leaves you with a straight male/female connection. I drilled the upper section for a new 1/8" drift pin that is a little less than a quarter inch wider than the section and ground matching grooves in the flange of the lower female section that the upper section can simply drop into and locate solidly. Now I simply lift out the upper, yet it cannot rotate with a boom arm mic stand inserted.
Atlas' product is made to very high standards (as always), but the engineering (and prototyping) could have either gone a step further...or even in the opposite direction where the stand just drops in as in my case. One way would have made the product a bit more expensive, but more functional, The other way would have made the product much simpler, less expensive and still more functional. This is a long-winded "review" for such a minor product, but I didn't want to criticize Atlas so much as to offer thoughts that might help both Atlas and consumers. So beautifully made product that doesn't quite function the way you would think.
