The JHS Punchline Bass Station Is No Joke!

The landmark bass recordings captured on the West Coast during the 1960s may seem challenging to achieve without truckloads of bulky, expensive vintage gear. But with a little help from the all-in-one Punchline Bass Station and the soldering artisans at JHS, you can enjoy the benefits of iconic bass tone inspired by the late-’60s sessions of The Beach Boys and their talented hired guns from the LA studio scene. Conceived in celebration of “The Beach Boys” documentary on Disney+, The Punchline is named for an unreleased track from the group’s early instrumental days, and it supplies four ways to shape output: a VCA compressor, an overdrive tailored to bass, a vintage amp simulator, and robust 3-band EQ. Together, these effects elicit musical results faster than you can say oom bop bop! Footswitch controls for Compressor and Overdrive sections enable quick dynamic shifts, making the Punchline Bass Station pedal an excellent choice for live performances. Moreover, your clean tone can be blended with the overdrive, which allows sculpted cleans with just a hint of vintage breakup, all the way up to the roaring heft of a vintage bass amp growling with tube-like punch and ample harmonics. Two-way switches for adjusting the compressor and amp sim add four ways to tweak the Punchline’s signal order to suit different needs. And, like any proper bass channel strip sold these days, the Punchline has an XLR DI output for sending the signal to mixing desks, audio interfaces, or other devices. The Punchline by JHS is available only at Sweetwater for a limited time — enjoy the last laugh and good (bass) vibrations when you grab a JHS Punchline Bass Station here at Sweetwater!

Four ways to mix and match dynamic sections on the fly

Compressor: A studio-grade VCA bass compressor that shapes dynamics using ratio and threshold controls, plus a gain range of +/- 20dB. The LED on the pedal’s top-right corner will illuminate when the signal meets the compression threshold to let you know the circuit is active. “Comp Pre” mode places the compressor first in the Punchline’s signal chain, which is perfect for thick studio cleans. “Comp Post” slots the compressor after the Drive and Amp Sim sections for a vastly different sound.

Drive: This drive pushes clean sounds into vintage-tinged breakup. The added “Clean” control is a killer feature that mixes clean signal back into the overdrive, which often leads to sweet spots and perfect balances between grit and articulation that help highlight technique.

Amp Sim: Analog bass amp simulation that’s particularly effective when sending the signal directly to mixers, interfaces, PA systems, or FRFR speakers. The gain knob adds tube-like harmonics and gritty color. The Presence control adjusts high- and upper-midrange content and is an indispensable tool when your tone needs an extra push to cut through the mix.

EQ/Master: An always-on mastering and EQ center, this section stays active even when the pedal is bypassed. You get a flexible 3-band EQ in the Baxandall style, which is among the most musical-sounding EQ styles you’ll ever experience. Since this section is always on, it plays a critical role in the Punchline’s core sound whether you’re using the amp sim or not. The Master Volume control affects the overall output and is highly interactive with the other volume and gain parameters.

Sweetwater's Exclusive The Beach Boys Studio Effects Collection

Of all America's musical exports, few artists can match the enduring influence and legacy of The Beach Boys. Launching May 24, 2024, exclusively on Disney+, "The Beach Boys" documentary is an all-out celebration of how Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, and Al Jardine forever altered the trajectory of popular music. The thrilling film traces the band's journey from a sun-bleached California surf group to their standing as a cultural "teenage symphony" touchstone. From Surfin' Safari to Pet Sounds and beyond, viewers will learn how The Beach Boys developed their signature sound, explored new horizons in the recording studio, and raced neck and neck with the Beatles' most acclaimed artistic achievements along the way.

Still, here at Sweetwater, the documentary is only half the story. Much to the pleasure of our gear-obsessed fanatics, the band reached out to resident pedal expert/historian Josh Scott of JHS to curate a set of pedals and effects sonically inspired by the group's most iconic records. Josh then recruited Chris Benson of Benson Amps and Robert Keeley of Keeley Electronics into the fold. The resulting The Beach Boys Studio Effects Collection comprises five Beach Boys-themed pedals that are only available at Sweetwater. From a splashy tube-driven spring reverb/optical tremolo unit to 12-string simulators and Wrecking Crew-inspired bass channel strips, this collection will take your tone straight back to the days when "Good Vibrations" and "Fun, Fun, Fun" ruled the airwaves!
