Rode Procaster

By Sweetwater Customer

I love the quality. It really brings out the bass in anyone's voice and does a great job silencing background noise that may be around you.

For me it was perfect!

By Michael C. from Mc calla, AL

I have many many microphones, including the SM7db. Now that's a fine mic for sure but it is just really not for me. I've also had the sE dynacaster dcm8 which was also great. But for my purpose which is vocal and spoken word, this Rode Procaster microphone is simply perfect. It smooth and balanced and for my voice, it shines above all the others. So much so, I'm considering buying another. If you're on the fence about this one,I hope you will give it a try. You won't be disappointed!

Rode Procaster

By Warren D.

I've been using this Rode Pro caster since December of 2020, at the time I wasn't sure what mic I needed but I was sure I needed a mic that had better off axis sound rejection than the condenser mic I was using at that time which was a mxl 990, which used phantom power. Over the past 2 - 2 1/2 years the mic has been in different positions and orientations, and some of those mounting choice's were bad because it made me use way too much gain and compression on my now retired Yamaha mg16xu audio mixer which had a gain of 64 Db. Now when the gain is set really high you everything in the room comes in including any air/heating systems you may have, with High pass Filter enabled, which is a feature on my former audio mixer. Moreover, I've read that sweetwater says the mic has a low cut filter which can be the same as a high pass filter, depending on how it's configured, however there isn't one on this mic and it's not a internal feature, I verified viewing this mic on rodes on product page, so sweetwater please fix this over sight. Over the past 2 - 2 1/2 years I've used this mic from skype call's to video production. and it hasn't let me down yet. The quality of this mic is metal construction, which makes it heavy, but durable. additionally, I have the wind shield installed on it which cut down on a lot of background air noise from my heating/air system, plus I have it mounted to the rode shock mount and rode boom arm. which have all stood up so far knock on wood. Now my current set up is a yamaha mg12 standard mixer, and I've got the mic now positioned correctly by using the heil fl-2 mic desk flange, too bad rode doesn't make a flange like the heil fl-2, this allowed me to mount the boom so that the mic and boom didn't obstruct my view of my 5 monitors and allowed it to get close enough to me so I didn't need the gain turned up past 50 db. The gain is currently set around 30 db or less depending on what application I'm using. and this allows the background not to be picked up by the mic and is even helped by the high pass filter on the yamaha mg12. All and all I'm well pleased with this mic and I hope I get many more years of reliable service out of it.

Awesome Value

By James O. from San Diego

Bought a few Podmics and love them. But, once I got the Procaster, it was over....I love this mic. Sounds, to me, just as good as an RE20 or SM7B...in all fairness, all 3 of those mics sound different...but the quality is the same. I fell in love with the Procaster when I started my Podcast. The magic combination...Procaster into the Rodecaster and the Podmics for my guests. Rode really out did themselves and has proven to be a great audio company.....AGAIN!!

This mic is everything they say it is and more. Sturdy with great sound. Mine is plugged into the Rode RODECaster Pro using the Rode PSA1 Pro Studio Arm and it is solid. The sound of the mic is great and exceeds my expectations.

Excellent Mic - be sure to give it gain

By Andrew M. from Londonderry, NH
Music Background: Drummer, full time in B2B software development

I use my Procaster primarily for the many Zoom calls I am on. Yes it is probably overkill but I love it. It is a very solid, heavy mic. Be careful how you support it. Also, if it has a high pass filter I wish someone would show it to me cause I can't find it. A HPF is not mentioned on Rode's website either, just Sweetwater's.

Anyway, on Zoom I started with the laptop mic, then a condenser mic, but the ambient noise was occasionally a killer for either, and I live in a quiet neighborhood. One example, folks were asking "Do you have construction going on there?" when my neighbor mowed his lawn. I went with dynamic mic -Procaster- knowing I might have to boost the gain. Now, one coworker often says I sound like I have a radio voice. That is just what I was shooting for! When I got the Procaster, my Evo 4 (entry level audio interface) was able to drive the mic signal but I had to turn it way up. I didn't notice any extra noise in the output but didn't like running the preamp at 90-100%. I added an inexpensive mic booster (Klark Teknik) and eventually a DBX 286s which also has a preamp among other goodies. The mic booster was cheap and was really all I needed. Honestly a little higher end audio interface probably wouldn't even need that.

My current audio setup is Procaster>Mic Booster>DBX 286s> Evo 4 >Stereo amp> passive monitors. The Procaster's excellent off axis rejection lets me use my monitors instead of crappy laptop speakers (or headphones) with zero feedback. The compressor in the DBX allows me to raise the low level sound so the mic is less sensitive to me moving back or turning away from it. I'm very happy with my purchases and a shoutout to David Ashley, best Sales Engineer Sweetwater has.

I hope this long winded review helps out somebody on a similar journey. Great mic, you'll love it.

Best Regards,
Drew

SUPER MIC, REALLY

By Adlai A. from NC
Music Background: Engineer, studio musician, songwriter

When I got this MIC, I was actually looking to buy just the boom stand to use in my home studio, but decided to give it a try. WOW! It sounds really good, I am so impressed Im actually considering re-recording some of the stuff I have done with other mics. Of course, there's no "magic-MIC", yet for every type of voice there's a particular mic that may sound better. I must say, for me, it sounds very nicely. Have not tried on a female vocalist yet, so I may come back and do another review. But the fact that with the boom I can position it where I need it when recording demos & playing the keys- I give it stellar review. GIve it a try, won't regret it.

And cant say enough about Sweetwater; they delivered in about 1/2 the expected time, Awesome!

Fantastic Mic

By Adlai from NC, USA
Music Background: Musician, Producer, Recording Engineer

First let me give Kuddos to Sweetwater, I ordered the mic not expexting it for at least 5-7 days. Got it within 2 days. Amazing! I got this mic with the Desk boom to have when I'm writting demos; being able to place a mic in front of me without having to turn my head had been a challenge in the past. Opened the mic- very well built. Placed the boom and started recording right away- this mic has a very nice sound to it (for my voice I have a hard time finding that "niceness" w/other mics). I have a baritone-like voice that I have to tweak with plugins, But with this one, I'm using very few plugins at all; extremely nice. Cant wait to test it on female vocals. I think I found my new favorite mic. Recommend it for those on a tight budget.!

Great Broadcast vocal mic

By Patrick from Florida
Music Background: Hobbyist, Podcaster, MI Sales

This is a great mic for the price. Well worth the money and can fit most podcasters budgets. I disagree with the last review, this mic doesn't need "A LOT of gain" if you have a good interface. Cheap interfaces like the M-Audio Fast Track series don't have great preamp circuits and as a result need more gain on the signal. So if you are planing on getting this mic with a $70 interface you can expect lower quality, over gained results. However if you put this through a decent interface of a similar level of quality then you will be very happy with the results. I have used this on a Presonus FireStudio as well as a Mbox2 Pro with no need to crank the gain up. I was also lucky enough to have the opportunity to use this on a Presonus ADL600 at a friends studio and was amazed at how clear and accurate the mic was on a higher end Tube Preamp. Moral of the story, don't sell yourself short by getting this and a cheap interface. You would be better served by the Rode Podcaster if your budget is $300 for mic and interface. Get a good interface and the Rode Procaster and be happy!

Great mic for Podcasting, broadcasting and training videos, but needs lots of gain!

By David from Ashland, Oregon
Music Background: Training video creator, podcaster, avid recording engineer

this is a a great mic for voice recording. It does an amazing job of rejecting side and back ground noise. The only problem is that it requires A LOT of gain to get a usable signal into the computer. I've paired it with an ART TupeMP with USB. I have to set the gain to max, add the additional 20db of boost and then set the output to 90%! But, when I do the sound is amazing. I have a dull voice normally, but this combination brings my voice way out in front, adds definition, presence and clarity. Though, at that point there is a bit of noise and ambient bleed that a little broadband noise reduction clears away easily. I've tried a dozen condensers and lavalieres and the Procaster is by far the best for voicecasting into a computer in a not-so-perfect sound environment (noisy fans, traffic outside, etc.) It delivers what Rode claims.
