Guitar Overdrive/Distortion Effects Pedal with Independent Soft- and Hard-clipped Sections

The PlimSoul mkII is an upgraded take on Fulltone’s original distortion pedal of the same name and still offers that priceless and revolutionary individual soft- and hard-clipping control — but now with a plethora of improvements. An increase in the input impedance sharpens leveling precision, while new germanium diodes within the hard-clipping control circuit mean vastly improved tonality at all intensities. Sweetwater guitarists are also digging the new brighter Treble control as well as a 3-way Bass switch that injects loss-less body to your distorted tone without hindering the signal quality. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Whether you’re a fan of cleaner and more rounded-off distortion or prefer the intensity of clipping that cuts hard, the PlimSoul mkII supplies the versatility to craft a distortion effect that matches the vibe of any tune at hand.

Run a Fulltone Ranger into it and it. You may not need any other pedals.

By DjMc from The Great White North

Let me preface this by saying that this is not my favorite pedal.
I purchased mine when they were supposedly closing these out for good, thinking it would be unique somewhere down the road.
I did the same with the Fulltone Ranger with the same philosophy.
Now, I have absolutely got on great with the Ranger. It is an incredible treble booster.
The Plimsoul on it's own however is just good. Better than a lot of other drive pedals due to its versatility. But kind of sterile in a way I can't put my finger on.
I have a couple other pedals like that and I've found, as many others have, that stacking pedals is sometimes the key to opening up the sound of one or two pedals that just work very well together.
This is one of those situations in my opinion.
You can see plenty of video reviews on this pedal and depending on the amp, it may sound pretty great.
But a trick I ran into over the last several years if you are a pedalboard junkie and like to run into a clean channel or one right on the edge of breakup, is to get a good treble booster.
In this particular case, the Fulltone Ranger into the Plimsoul Mk II is an exceptional combination.
Its like putting a supercharger on an already quick car.
It just pushes it right over the top into sonic territory that has great tonal capabilities and exceptional sustain and flexibility.
I've had a King of Tone. It's great. However. I believe you can achieve sonic greatness without waiting 4 years by obtaining other combinations and finding your own sound. I use 3 different amps with completely different sonic qualities.
A Mesa Mark V. A Fender Super-Sonic 22. And an Orange Rocker 15 Terror. All sound great on their own, and different depending on the guitar and pickups you are using.
That said, you can go outside the boundaries those amp designers had in mind by bombarding the input with unexpected analog waves of sonic goodness and create things that maybe haven't been created before by simply opening yourself up to the possibilities and potential of gain stacking. I see it talked about in forums regularly, but rarely do I see Fulltone pedals in the conversation.
Break the mold and take a look at both of these pedals. Consider grabbing both. It will be money well spent.

Sounds nothing like the original Plimsoul

By Stan E. from San Francisco, CA

I've had the original Plimsoul on and off my board since they first came out. It's a very warm drive pedal. My only complaint was that it was a little "bass heavy". So the 3-way bass roll-off switch on the MKII was a welcome design change, along with all the jacks being moved to the top of the pedal to save space. However, the MKII doesn't have as much bass as the original, even when not rolling it off, so the switch doesn't seem to be as needed. The tone seems to be considerably brighter and grainier also. I've read similar internet reviews before buying, but decided to try it anyway. I plan to keep it for the time being, and maybe try it with an EQ pedal, but it wasn't the upgrade I was hoping for. Sweetwater's service was stellar as usual, tho, and I can recommend them.

PlimSoul

Awesome pedal! Makes my small 1-12 amp growl like a vintage Marshall.

AMAZING!!!

By Rick V.

Purchased this pedal and it's great by itself, but amazing when stacking with another overdrive. Thick, rich, midrangey -perfect!

Further Review Required

I hope I can give this a five star review.

I only have a Vox AC30 to test the pedal with. I also live in a house crowded with people with varying schedules. I loaned the pedal to a friend who prefers his Tube Screamer Mini.

He told me the Plimsoul Mk2 is the most versatile Distortion/Overdrive pedal he has ever used, referring affectionately to the Clipping controls.

Once I get some alone time with the pedal and my new AC30, I'll leave a personal review.

Meh

By Sweetwater Customer

I'm underwhelmed. Noisy (and not the good kind of noise,) over-priced and unreliable.
