Pignose Amps Pignose 5-watt 1x5" Combo Amp - Brown Reviews

5-watt 1-channel 1x5" Guitar Combo Amp - Brown

The powerful little Pignose, with that distinctively funky Pignose sound, has become an on-call staple of countless recording studios, rehearsal studios, dorm rooms, dressing rooms, and backyards around the world since the '60s. The ultimate in portable amplifiers, the legendary 7-100 is the original "go where you want to go" amp. A 5" speaker in a rugged, metal-cornered cabinet moves the air for this amp, while a preamp output jack lets you take advantage of its great distortion in the studio, into a PA, or with a larger external amp. Powered by batteries or with an optional power supply, you can take this little screamer anywhere!

Pignose Amp

By Brent Palmatier from Meridian Idaho on March 27, 2024 Music Background: Professional Harmonica player

This amp is amazing!! I use it for my harmonica, it is portable and works very well. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a small, portable high quality amp that works well with an electric guitar as well. :-)

Put my boutique amp on the market.

By Dante D'Ambrosia from Supply, NC on January 4, 2024

In a world of 15 knobs on amps this hog only needs one. Great purchase and highly recommend. For the best clean tone treat it like a fuzz and crank it to 10 and use your volume on your guitar to mold your tone.

It is fantastic

By Phil Morrell from YUMA, AZ on December 19, 2023 Music Background: Hobby

I just received my PigNose yesterday afternoon and played through it most of the night. I have a modeling amp with tones of effects but I have to use headphones because the amp is too loud for the apartment. I shopped around and found it at several places. I have bought several things from Sweetwater including a new Fender Ultra Stratocaster and all shipping and customer service has been 5 stare.
Ivan Salazar, emails confirming order and even follows up with a call after delivery.

Great upgrade to your Pignose.

By Jack Bales from Texas on October 17, 2023 Music Background: Bluegrass picker.

I have had Pignose amp for 30+ years and it still works great.

I recently upgraded it with 3 9vdc USB rechargeable batteries (each 6800mAh).

Also added wireless mic and wireless guitar. Works great for either.

Next I am adding an effects module internally for reverb delay and chorus.

Energizer bunny has nothing on this little powerhouse.

Pignose!

By Randy on April 23, 2023

My main purpose for this amp was to use with my Cigar Box Guitar, and so far I really like it. Small enough to take anywhere and sounds swampy.

It’s got the mojo

By Ben from Indiana on March 7, 2023

This amp drips mojo. I play harmonica and it sounds killer. I even played this in a small bar with a country band and it kept up. Great stuff.

Since the 70s

By James on January 8, 2022 Music Background: Been playing a long time. Not well. But for a long time.

I've been using Pignose amps since the 1970s. Play them in the park, in the basement, in a dorm room, on the porch, in the car…. Busking. Gigging. Rehearsing. Recording. Friend of mine described the tone as "a Marshall stack from three blocks away."

Really cool and useful little amp. Every guitar player should have one in your bag of tricks.

I love my Pignose

Nasty, dirty, push the sound out raw! I Love My Pignose!

Pignose

By Kurt A Stuckey on May 28, 2021 Music Background: Played in bands off and on for years.

I bought the Pignose to take in my camper van for road trips but it also happens to be a great little practice amp for my small apartment. Amazed at the sound variations you can get out of this little amp, depending on the volume control on your guitar and/or on the amp. I'm having fun with it!

The Real Deal

By Sweetwater Customer from IL on January 30, 2020 Music Background: Playing guitar for 28 years.

I've wanted one of these since I saw a pic of George Harrison and Eric Clapton playing one when I was a kid. I finally picked one up from Sweetwater and so glad I did. This thing rips! Turned all the way up it has a fuzz face, Black Sabbath sounding distortion. There's not much of a clean tone, but if you turn the volume down on the amp and your guitar, you can get close to a clean sound. Also, the thing just looks cool. Recommenced!

The Must-Have Pignose

By Sweetwater Customer on December 2, 2018

Year ago I had one. It got away from me somehow. l will have 2 when the 2nd one I just ordered arrives. Hands down my favorite practice amp and on some level I dare say amp with my Strats. This is tremendous for vocals up front accompaniment, a kind of New Orleans street singer vibe, not just for the in-studio 70s sound that it's more commonly known for. Deservedly legendary and classic.

My Pigno amp

By Steve Andersen from Oceanside, California. on August 31, 2017

I love my Pignose amp. Use it everyday (week days). Had to get this new one because the batteries leaked in the old one. I use the a/c adapter primarily and now I keep the batteries in containers in the amp so I can use them when I need them.

GREAT, Classic Amp

By Stupidscript from Los Angeles on January 28, 2016 Music Background: Lots of it ... and then some ... !

This little guy kicks butt.

If you want something clean, keep it mellow, about 25% max, in the Volume Department, and you'll be fine ... on the beach.

If you want something amped, you're good up until about 40% for a light combo situation, but you'll need a PA beyond that.

For a casual great amp, get one of these. You simply can't go wrong.

IT HAS GUITAR STRAP PEGS!
IT'S COVERED IN PIG-LEATHER!
IT HAS A SUPER-CUTE PIGNOSE KNOB!!
IT'S LESS THAN $100!!

Dang.

Couldn't be happier!

By Laurie Habegger from Ft. Wayne, IN on December 29, 2014

The amp sounds great for our beginner guitar player. However, customer service is what really blew me away! I received a phone call and several email checking on my product and satisfaction! Will definitely use Sweetwater for our musical needs!

Great sound in a small package

By Dan Attoe from Washougal, WA, USA on August 19, 2013 Music Background: Dabbler - teaching my three year old appreciation with harmonicas

It's pretty amazing how much character and volume this little amp can bring to a session! It's a great deal for what it is.

This allows me to travel with my guitar

By John from Austin Texas on August 4, 2012 Music Background: I Play blues guitar

I bought this amp simply because it was small and easy to travel with.No other reason . I had already consigned myself to thinking I was going to have to sacrifice in sound quality . When I received the amp I could not believe what I was hearing . It sounds as good as my other larger amps . The volume is completely adequate and when you use it as a preamp the sound quality evan gets better. I am 100% satisfied with this little amp.

Piggin' Out On Tone!!!

By Rob M. from California on November 15, 2011 Music Background: Guitar Player.

At the price these are now, everyone should own a Pignose... I knew what I wanted in a practice amp and this couldn't be better. Most people refer to these as one trick pony's... Compared to all of the modern features found on amplifiers these day's it's easy to agree with them.. However, the reason I chose the Pignose is because it does exactly what I want it to, it amplifies the tone of my Les Paul and allows me to practice at "Non-Wall Shaking" volumes... I own a Peavey Vypyr 15 and a Fender GDec, both great for practicing as well, but they always tempt me to incrementally raise the volume until the house is filled with GUITAR!!!... Even cranked, the Pignose hardly achieves annoying volumes and everyone is happy... In fact the other night I had the urge to play at 1 in the morning, wound up playing for two hours in the living room with great tone and all the while not disturbing a single sleeping soul in the house... It's simple, practical, portable and offers a great solid state tone... Cleans up by rolling back the volume on your guitar... Who knows, I may even do a little busking around town... Anyways, Great little amp! Classic!

Great backyard amp!

By Aka alias unknown from VA on September 26, 2019 Music Background: Extensive background, with lots of ground to cover yet!

I purchased one of these after reviewing this and the black star fly "stereo", Mason Bouvier recommended this, knowing my "style/preferences" after being a dedicated customer 17 months! I use it extensively in the backyard and up on the skyline drive, with a faded cherry Gibson Les Paul junior, when I'm in an "electric mood" or my fingertips get too tender for an acoustic! I prefer to keep the sound clean and the only fault I have is getting volume without distortion? Thinking about purchasing another and running my guitar thru a ABy to get the stereo sound and more volume. I and all who experience the sound of this tiny beast are impressed and amazed! Would highly recommend it to anyone for whatever reasons you may have for a small portable tough little amp!!

after researchin, chose the pignose!

By Chris from Las Cruces, NM on June 17, 2016 Music Background: Six year guitar veteran

so i wanted to buy a portable amp to take with me when I go on walks, so I looked up, reviewed, and compared several other models. I chose thise because all I read and heard was positive things. people complained there isn't a clean channel, there is but it isn't as oud as id like it to be, where as the distorted chanel was louder. over all very happy for my purchase from Sweetwater, an awesome Co.

Little Pignose does a fine job

By David from Houston Area on March 30, 2015 Music Background: Old timer

These little amps sound amazing with the distortion they provide. They get surprisingly loud for their very small size. I had one many years ago and finally decided to get another one. The old one had a spring piece that kept the power adapter in it's place. This new one does not and the power adapter flops around inside. I added some Velcro to the adapter and the little place where the adapter fits and it worked just fine, it was an easy fix. I have hooked up my smart phone to it and somehow it does not sound distorted? I find this amazing too. I still wish they were more quite when turned on and not playing music. It's a great deal for those guitar players that have little money and little space . . . oh that's most of us! Sweetwater got it to me even before they said it would arrive. I think the power adapter should be included when it's sold, just charge ten dollars more and be done with it.

THE PIG

By DON JENNINGS from DECATUR, TX on December 20, 2014 Music Background: Garage Band

The best little amp around. This is my second one. Durable, compact, versatile, and fantastic sound. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is my first AC adapter didn't last very long. Also, what can I say about Sweetwater? They're the best! Fast and easy! I used to buy from another popular internet company that had pathetic customer service. Once I tried Sweetwater, I was hooked. Thanks Sweetwater!

Ideal travel amp

By Michael from Arlington, VA on November 16, 2012 Music Background: Ex professional musician, now a hobbyist

As everyone is aware, the iconic Pignose amp is an ideal travel/practice amp. A very loud 5 watts! Put this in my personal carry-on bag when flying. I use either a Line 6 Verbzilla or Echo Park with this, works great.

Pignose amp

By Bill on September 1, 2021

I Love it. Nasty snarl and sounds mean. I use the AC adapter. I have tried it with various pedals and works great. I would give it 5 stars. I love the mobility of it. I was reminded of it from the Ralph Macchio and Steve Vai movie CROSSROADS. In the movie ir is mobile because it does have Guitar strap pegs. Nobody sells a shortened strap to wear it while playing Sweetwater, Guitar Center and Sam Ash dont carry small straps. I dont want to pay full price for a strap that I have to alter to use. I also from time to time use the batteries. Anorher cool thing is you can store batteries and an adapter inside the box. 4 1\2 stars only because no one sells a proper strap.

Nasty!!

By T Sandwich on May 9, 2020

Just got it today and gave it a spin with a Les Paul. It's a wonderful amp.

I had difficulty opening the unit up - after unlatching it, I was looking for some other mechanism to pry open the box. I realized it was just freshly manufactured and a bit sticky. I got a and knife and popped it open. The box is much heavier than I expected (not sure what I expected) and sturdy as hell. Any worries that the unit would be flimsy definitely vanished.

I plugged in the power supply I'd bought for the unit and my a guitar with humbuckers (Les Paul) and was immediately disappointed with how noisy the unit was. It was plainly too loud for recording, and even offensive for a practice session, with a noise floor well above either of my tube amps. It was dead silent until a guitar cord was plugged in, at which point a nasty hissed emerged from the unit. I hadn't noticed any noise issues with that guitar.

I swapped the power supply for 6 AA batteries. The hiss was immediately, greatly reduced. It's still a touch noisy compared to a soulless Line 6 practice amp (to my memory - I sold one years ago and bought this to replace it for some late-night practice with the hope I might use it for recording as well). But if you crank it a bit, it's not much noisier than an overdriven tube amp. 100% useable and will probably record with it soon. In other words - forget the power supply. Invest in AA batteries.

I haven't got good clean sounds out of it yet, but I cranked it and my guitar knobs and it instantly produced a biting, beautiful distortion that immediately brought to mind classic rock records I grew up listening to.

Cranked, it's insanely loud. I couldn't believe how loud it gets! It packs a much greater punch than I expected, and sounds like an amp with a much larger driver than I expected. I haven't used a solid state amp in a while (hence my need for a quieter practice amp) and was surprised by how "tube-y" it sounded, but it has a bite that that definitely isn't in the tubey amps.

Opening the box gives a better sound than closed, and it's certainly an effective and weird way to control the EQ of the unit. It definitely will give me a wide variety of tones based on mic placement and I will definitely end up recording with it. The next time I'm taking a trip, it will be good to know I can practice - in fact, quite loudly - with this little number without having to pack something which takes up a lot of room.

Loved it.... Long ago

By Jonathan from Iowa on February 21, 2018 Music Background: 25 years of guitar

I bought this amp in 1995. By the photos here it seems identical to that era of pignose in speaker and circuitry chassis. The cabinet gives it surprising bass response. Worth the $ but not a perfect score for reliability. A friend dropped mine on concrete and the magnet broke off from the speaker basket.

Brown Pignose Amp.

By Jim R. from Texas panhandle on April 4, 2013 Music Background: Hobbyist. Play in Church.

It is great for what it is. I think it breaks up too soon, but you can easily get clean tone by turning the volume control on your guitar down. The distortion sounds more like a bad speaker with single coil PUPs. I haven't tried it with humbuckers yet. I believe the tone will get better when I hook it up to a larger speaker cab. To be fair, it's brand new and the speaker is not broken-in yet. It is pretty amazing for a practice amp. I read somewhere that Jimi Hendrix recorded with one, so I might be completely wrong about it's ability with single coils. I do recommend this amp. It is versatile, very portable, and worth every cent! I don't know why I took so long to try one.
