MXR CSP101SL Script Phase 90 Pedal
MXR CSP101SL Script Phase 90 Pedal Reviews
Add an MXR Custom Shop Script Phase 90 to your pedalboard and instantly transport your tone back to the early days of rock, when shimmering chords and warbling leads were giving creative guitarists the fuel they needed to redefine modern music. True to the specs of the original Phase 90 model that MXR made up until the late '70s, the Script Phase 90 gives you both the expansive headroom and exceptional clarity that made this such a popular effect, plus the warmth and smoothness those old circuit designs were known for. Top it off with an original orange paint job and script logo, and the only way you can tell the original apart from the reissue MXR Custom Shop Script Phase 90 is the handy status LED.
We expect more from MXR in just a few days. Order today to reserve yours now, risk-free. Estimated by May 11.
One Knob, Zero Bad Tones
You truly cannot go wrong with this pedal, so much versatility without needing several controls to get confused by. Set it really low to sound like Eddie Van Halen, set it more moderate to sound like David Gilmour, and set it really high to get experimental and almost rotary-like. The Script version is slightly more "classic" sounding and it's only $\ more (as of me writing this), so it felt worthwhile to me to get the "vintage correct" tone, but if you want to save a few bucks I'm sure the block-logo will do you just fine. Get some version of a Phase 90 and thank me later.
Great Phaser
What can I say... it's the Gold (er... Orange) Standard!
This is the way
I had the EVH Phase 90 but sold it because I am an idiot. So when I decided to get a new one I got this. As far as I can tell it's the EVH version in script only mode, for the same price. The only questions were "why pay the same for one less mode? Why not get the red one again and have block mode too??" Three reasons:
1) I never used block mode on the EVH except when I accidentally hit the button. Now that won't happen.
2) I did not like the glaring blue light. This has a red light.
3) Orange.
The other option was the 74 vintage script but that has no LED, no 9V, sounds the same, affects tone, and costs more. I don't give a crap about hand wired vintage.
This is the way.
Simple, Warm, Vintage Phasing
It doesn't get much simpler than one knob, and that's the way I like it. From what I understand, the Script model lacks the resonance/feedback of the block model and other more modern phasers, and has a less extreme whoosh. I play anything from funky blues to stoner doom, and this pedal works phenomenally for the sounds I want. The sound is warm and gooey, and there are nice formant (vocaloid) sounds when it sweeps. It's an inspiring pedal. It stays out of the way and just *works*. The only thing I would change is to be able to disable the LFO and sweep the filter manually, but other than that, it's a winner!
Love It
Great sounding phaser
Really?
The best of the best. Simple.
Less is more
After trying other more adjustable phaser pedals and still not being happy, I went back to the basics by retrying the MXR. I had the block lettering version in the past did like it, but eventually sold it. With this script version, I found the sound that I was looking for right out of the box. It sounds better than I remembered, really clear and intense, especially with a lot of gain. In a world where pedals have more and more knobs, sometimes you only need one. Give the script a try! And thanks to Damian at Sweetwater for all the help that he's given me lately, you rock man!
Orange creamsicle
I use this on my bass guitar with the rate at 10 o clock. So cool! So very musical, thick, lush, creamy. Just such a classic sound that works great in a mix on absolutely anything. Keeps bottom end really well for a standard guitar phaser and is just such a vibe without being typecast. Love MXR, love this pedal!
It's the best
I have been playing for 30 years and tried everything. This is the best.
Mxr script logo
Bought the demo model. Sounds great and though everyone talks about EVH and getting his sound, that's cool but not what I was after. I wanted a Waylon Jennings ( are you sure Hank done it this away) sound. Waylon used phase a lot for his sound. And it's going to meet my needs.one disappointment was, I took the back cover off to remove the battery if it came with one. It didn't. But noticed that the switch is soldered to the circuit board
The original 74 models used a stand alone 3dpdt hand wired switch. So it isn't an exact replica of the old pedals. The circuit board mounted switch can fail over time and sometimes Crack the board itself. Still I'm going to keep it. It will most likely last a few years.
Great phaser
Excellent phase. Would highly recommend
EVH Tone
This is the pedal for the early Van Halen sound, at about 3 or 4 you have that classic swirly sound that adds so much texture without dominating your tone, it sounds so good. It's subtle at that level but makes a huge difference. If you're wanting a more in your face phaser sound just dial up the knob. And thanks to Tiberius!!!
A Classic Pedal
Instantly a recognizable sound in rock music's hayday. Has its place in modern rock as well, and on my board. Cool vintage color too.
Excellent
I chose the Script after watching a shootout video comparing the various models. Extremely happy with the choice. Does exactly what a Phaser should do. Iconic sound. Perfect
One knob and the truth
Im not really a big pedal guy per say however I love the classic effects from the 60s and 70s as that's primarily the style of guitar I play. I don't have an actual pedalboard I more or less run either guitar cable amp or will just grab a couple pedals at a time and run them Hendrix style daisy chained in front of amp. anyhow I always wanted a phaser and this one sounds really nice. has a deep almost dark like quality. On another note every MXR pedal I have bought so far has been amazing build and performance quality. Ive owned the phaser, chorus , and the carbon delay and all have been visually, sonically and physically up to snuff!
The MXR Phase 90 is a great addition to the pedal board.
The MXR Phase 90 is a great addition to the pedal board, particularly for someone just getting started with effects. This essential pedal is a classic. It provides basic phase features at a reasonable price. The MXR pedal is constructed using a durable metal box. The knob, switch, and I/O jacks appear to be high-quality and built to last.

MXR Custom Shop Script
I listened to them all, and decided on the Script. It think it sounds warmer, and is more subtle than the Block. I'll seldom use this... but when I do, quality sound is there!
Excellent
This pedal is great. my bass blows kisses at it.
Looks cool too.
Phase 90
Makes me want to bring back the Doobie Brothers
MXR Phase 90
I had one of the MXR Phase 90 that I bought back in 1970's when it was first released and had traded it way in a deal for a vintage tube amp to help reduce the cash amount needed to buy the amp at the time. Since I have gone through a variety of chorus boxes trying to recreate the ease and comfort of sound I had from the Phase 90. None of them even came close to capturing the unique sound quality I got from this simple and beautifully designed Phase 90. I am very happy to have this sound back in my gig bag. It is just a classic color tone in a well constructed package that is easy to use. 5 Stars.?
Script Phase 90
I've avoided the modern version of this pedal because it just sounds too harsh. When I got this one, the first thing I did was run it through a Boogie Mark III. It totally nails the effect I was hoping for. It has a lot of presence, but it sounds natural and smooth through the amp, definitely setting a tasteful mood. Night and day difference from the contemporary version of this pedal, which dominates the signal in an overbearing way.
The phaser for me
I had a block script mxr 90, mr. black Gilamondo and OBNE dweller. This script MXR takes the best of the Gilamondo and makes it cleaner and perfect for when I jump off of heavier metal tones through my orange dual dark. Clean channel usage, in front of the amp. Sometimes I'll pop the script phaser on during a distorted solo. When I read it has that "have a cigar on me" tone, I bought it and quickly became my favorite phaser.
Deliciously musical!
This was on back order, and totally worth the wait. The single knob is deceptively simple; it's more like a dial for a whole palate of moods. This has to be my favorite modulation pedal ever! Thanks to Jimmy Itela.
The gods made pancakes and MXR brought the syrup!
Just A Solid Phaser
For the price I'm impressed. I'd call this version of the Phase 90 a little less "gooey" - a little cleaner than it's vintage counterpart that I've used, but that's an advantage for some people. This thing sounds clean, works with your core tone and other pedals really well. You can also use it for an acoustic guitar rig and it ads some cool flavor. The best thing probably is that it just sounds good and is easy as they come to use. Turn one dial and make music.
Phase 90 Script
Just what I was looking for my David Gilmour inspired pedal board. Easy to use and sounds great. Very good quality.
The Holy Grail of Phase
Smooth, beautiful phasing! I had the block logo for years and loved it, but I have been in phase heaven since acquiring this script reissue. This thing literally always sounds good... Slow setting= early VH, fast setting= Jimmy Page a la "Achilles Last Stand," etc. Buy this pedal!
Great Addition to the Pedalboard
If you're searching for that vintage phaser sound, look no more -- this is the pedal for you. Feels well built and durable, like other MXR pedals. With just one knob to control the speed, it's super easy to use. Just kick it on and bask in the swirly, phaser-y goodness.
Love it
Love this pedal got it a day ahead of time, Van Halen's atomic punk is why I wanted it but Ive already applied it to a few of my own things, I just love it!
The phase you want
Simple, not costly, and the best sounding phase you will ever own. Just warm, sweet, phase deliciousness.
Classic Pedal
Best phaser ever. Simple but effective.
Warm tone and not overbearing.
Got it at a good Sale price from Sweetwater.
Fair pricing and the customer service is excellent.
It’s THE SOUND
It’s the sound I‘ve heard in my head and on recordings for years! Waylon, James Burton, and many others. It’s perfect.
Just the right amount
It has just the right amount of phase I was looking for. Great vintage\warm sounding pedal. This would be a great addition to any guitarists pedal board.
Get one
Chewy,just right. Waylon at 1:00,Eddie at 8:00
It's A Phase 90
It sounds exactly like all the hype. Syrupy, warm, etc.. Absolutely nothing to complain about. It's simply a great phaser.
Simple
I've had a number of phasers over the years starting with the ROSS Phaser from the 70's. All have been good, and while I like having the flexibility to control depth and mix, the Phase 90 simplifies use by keeping it to one knob for speed. That makes it the easiest to use and easiest to remember settings on.
I chose the Phase 90 Script over the standard Phase 90 because I thought it reproduced those 70's and 80's phase sounds best.
This is an excellent pedal that is well made-as are all MXR products-and I expect to get years of easy use from it.
Stick to the script!
This is a great sounding phaser pedal. I had the regular MXR Phase 90 and I didn't really like how that one sounded. -To my ears, it added an abrasiveness to my clean tone. The Script Phase 90 is a lot smoother, and doesn't color your tone. I like that this version has a LED so you can tell it's on at a glance. I can't say how it sounds compared to an actual vintage MXR Phase 90, but I do like how this pedal sounds. Highly recommended.
Back to the 70’s
The mxr script phaser is super easy to use with one knob that selects mild to wild outer space tones and sounds.. really cool.
Great quality as usual from mxr and small footprint.
This pedal is quite and does not color your tone.
Nice addition to the pedal board.
Sounds Like The Ones From The 70s
This has THE sound you"ll find in the ones made in the 70s. Plus, you can hook up an external power source instead of taking it apart when you change the battery.
Flawless
Like stepping back in time.
Classic
Classic and for good reason! Killer tone and that vintage phase we all love.
MXR Phase 90
Works great for my needs.Great sales support!
Great Phase Pedal
The Script MXR Phase 90 pedal is awesome! Subtle, yet very noticeable effect that exudes that classic rock sound....easy to use, well built and a steal at $99 with free shipping! Thanks, Sweetwater!
MXR Phase 90
Love this product. I also own the MXR Phase 45, however the 90 is much more transparent.
Durable No Frills Phasing
I have gigged 4-6 times a month and practiced 2 times a week for over a year and this pedal is just as good as the day I took it out of the box. It is a nice smooth phaser and is a little more subtle than its non-script counterpart. Wish it had a mix or volume knob as well but its a good old analog pedal so you get what you get.
Better than the regular phase 90
I was going to pick up the regular phase 90 but my sales engineer Joe Schafer (Ext 1393) pointed me to this custom shop script version and I’m happy he did. The Phase 90 is a great sounding pedal but this script version is much more transparent and lush sounding. Give Joe a call and pick one up for yourself.
Phabulous Phaser
If you're looking for classic tones This is the phaser for you, it's warm, full, simple to use and it looks classic as well! Discussed several different options with Clint Brantster and decided to go with Clint's recommendation and he nailed it. Thanks Clint!
Fantastic Phaser
I was looking into getting a Phase 90 because of its watery phasing and the great number of pros that also use it. (Gilmour, Page, & Van Halen among others.) I was comparing model this to the standard "block logo" and the script model without the LED. I settled on this one (CSP-101SL) because it offers smooth, subtle phasing at a good price, plus it has a power jack! I mostly play it clean with the speed set around noon, and it sounds great. (Have a Cigar sounds fantastic.) With distortion added, you can go from a slow phased EVH Brown Sound to a faster faux-Univibe Hendrix sound. With the exception of a tiny bit of noise added to the signal, this pedal is sure to please.
See my existing review for a correction
The pedal I bought is the MXR CSP026 '74 Vintage Phase 90 Pedal that IS a "Custom Shop" model "Script" MXR Phase 90 - but the CSP101SL does have a DC power jack. My original review is for the The MXR CSP026 '74 Vintage Phase 90 which DOES NOT have a DC power jack. BTW, I took it to my friends auto repair shop, he got a pneumatic drill and gently carved out the right shape and gently moved the 9volt battery cable from inside the MXR to right outside the metal housing. He even found a small grommet that fits the new opening perfectly, so with the case back screwed on and mad stomping neither the case or my weight will strip or cut those tiny power wires. Now its just like Paradise! Thanks so much Jimmy D and Ray in Rockville MD. Sorry for the mix-up and happy jamming Y'all!
This is The One You Love
better than the plain phase 90
I've owned the regular phase 90 maybe 2 or 3 times in the past, had no clue this pedal was any better. Boy was I wrong! This little box of goodness blew me away the second I plugged it in. If you're looking for a phaser, stop. This is the one to get. Thanks Tyler Berggren for recommending this over the regular phase 90.
Breath
Great phase pedal! Killer tone warm and lush. Vintage logo is cool. Sweetwater is great. Luke your the man.
Nice Pedal
Can't go wrong with this pedal has a nice mellow phase. Great for Waylon. Solid and durable pedal.
MXR Script Phase 90
Great 70's vintage sounds per the original, without paying a royalty to EVH.
Phase 90
This pedal more than meets my needs. I use an Ibanez RG series guitar , run the pedal through the front of a blackstar ht studio 20H. It is positioned after the wah pedal and before the distortion pedal. The main purpose is for certain rhythm riffs and leads. It has a rich and full tonality.
Sweet, musical phaser
