Sonor PB-STANDARD Jojo Mayer Perfect Balance Standard Single Bass Drum Pedal Reviews

Linear Ballistic-fiber Strap-driven Bass Drum Pedal with Hybrid Round Cam/Beater Hub, and Longboard Layout

The original Perfect Balance kick pedal was all about simplicity and economy of motion. And what could be simpler than a noncollapsible design and a standard hoop clamp? The Sonor Perfect Balance Standard single bass pedal picks up where the Jojo Mayer signature model left off. Its strap-controlled round cam and beater hub mechanism provide a smooth, linear throw and lightning speed to pull off those Mayer-esque triples and heel-to-toe sixteenths. New for the Perfect Balance Standard is a redesigned heel plate bearing, which reduces play and further increases smoothness. If you’re looking to cop some of Mayer’s flair and panache but don’t need the collapsible design or self-aligning hoop clamp, then be sure to check out the streamlined and well-priced Sonor Perfect Balance Standard bass drum pedal through Sweetwater.

Sonor PB-STANDARD Jojo Mayer Perfect Balance Standard Single Bass Drum Pedal

By Bob A. from Hebron, Ct

Over the past 50 plus years, I have tried an endless number of pedals. This one, is by far the fastest pedal I have ever used. Light to the touch and great for heel down players. Easy to feather and simple to adjust. Great investment.

Perfect kick pedal, questionable spring quality

By Maximus M. from Sturtevant, WI
Music Background: Very experienced

I love this pedal more than any other that I've played. I would confidently say that it helped me develop my playing and it was perfect for every style. However, the thing died on me after 7 months. The spring broke in such a way that was entirely unfixable. The spring can't be removed from the pedal itself, so I couldn't even replace it if I wanted to. I'm absolutely heartbroken. It's a good pedal, but don't expect it to last forever.

Great pedal!

By Slate from Myrtle beach
Music Background: Professional drummer over 40 years

I've waited Almost a year to write this review. I wanted to make sure it was accurate.
Right out of the box it was perfectly dialed in. It's been about 150 gigs and it's still doing great! I love the simple design. It's built very well. Just buy it!

50 gigs into it

By Michael F. from Surfside beach, SC

I needed a main bass drum pedal. I picked this sonor because I liked the simplicity of it. Plus sonor makes good stuff. Right out of the box it was perfect. 50 gigs in it still is excellent. I play
outside near ocean all the time. No sign of any weathering. I do recommend tightening (included)
Once in a while. Just get it! It's well worth the price.

Poor quality Springs

By Rico H. from Seattle Wa.
Music Background: Drummer

I have two of these Sonor pedals. I like them. The only issue had is with very light springs that don't match the weight of the beater even fully tension imho. I had to replace springs with Tama regular Iron Cobra springs.

Simply...awesome!

By Jay from Hartsville, South Carolina
Music Background: Playing since 1986 in all styles

I write this review 3 years after my purchase. I've been playing since 1986. I've played most brands. This pedal, to this day, absolutely knocks me out. It's simple design is also attractive. No need in fidgeting with countless adjustments because it's not necessary. It's fast, it's smooth, it's like you're playing nothing at all, like it's an extension of your body. My doubles are lightening fast now (and honestly fairly effortless). This is an awesome piece of equipment. Simply...awesome!

Quick and Smooth!

By Thomas K. from Long Island, NY
Music Background: Drummer for 40+ years

I just received this pedal and immediately wanted to try it out. One adjustment and it was good to go. I have some high end pedals so I wasn't sure how this one would perform in comparison. I cannot believe how smooth and how great this pedal feels, I'm amazed and thrilled! Totally glad I decided to try this one. I absolutely recommend it!

Buy this pedal!!

By Austin H. from Swartz Creek, MI

TLDR: if you're thinking about getting this pedal, or on the fence for the 'signature' or 'standard' version - get this one, the standard!!

I don't usually write reviews, but this is a great piece of gear. I bought one right away, and didn't regret it. Pedal is smooth, super sensitive, but can put out whatever you put into it. Pedal beater close to the head, super tight spring - ultra fast/quiet. Beater further away, looser spring and I can get a huge sound. Actually a -perfect- pedal for my needs.

Completely Transparent

By Kevin from Nashville
Music Background: Professional live/session player of 15 years.

I bought the original version of this pedal about 7 years ago, and it immediately became my favorite piece of gear. I've owned pedals spanning various brands and price points, pearl, dw, iron cobra, etc. none of them have felt as natural as the perfect balance. All of them had compromises, namely being an accelerated stroke. The exception to this rule was ironically a $60 pearl pedal that felt pretty similar. If you've ever played an old can I pedal, this will feel very familiar.

THE PROBLEM with that original version of this pedal, while I have to tip my hat to the engineering, the folding mechanism is a complete failure. Every single gig I took the pedal on, it would fold on its own in the middle of me playing. Usually multiple times a night.

THE FIX - I always wished they would release a simplified version of this pedal that retained everything great about it, and it's finally here. This pedal will put out whatever you throw at it. It will never accelerate your stroke half way through, regardless of beater position, foot board height, spring tension, etc. you will be able to effortlessly and accurately play with either the softest finesse, all the way up to the heaviest of playing. I'm over the moon to have this pedal back in my hands, and if you're tired of compromising feel, you'd be nuts not to buy this pedal. It will be replacing my Dw 9000, which I bought in an attempt to capture a fraction of the magic of this pedal (after my frustrations with the folding mechanism reached a boiling point). Buy this pedal and don't look back. You won't regret it.

DOUBLES!

By Jay L. from Hartsville, SC
Music Background: Drums. Berklee alum. Etc.

After MUCH back & forth, I bought this pedal. The rounded cam, lack of hardware post on the right hand side and long footboard are absolute GAME CHANGERS!!! It's MUCH easier to pull off more intricate patterns on this pedal with relative ease. Buy this pedal and forget the rest! You'll be glad that you did!

Amazing!!

By Devon from Collegeville, PA
Music Background: Drummer

Absolutely love it! This pedal is so perfect, hence the name. Very easy to adjust, and the belt is indestructible. The head bends before the belt does when I press down. It's just amazing. Very very smooth action, and it had way more power than I expected from a belt drive with a round cam. The bearer is great, the the drawstring bag is a nice touch.

It's a great pedal

By Jason from Maryland
Music Background: Hobbyist 30+ years

I'm not usually pursuaded to buy something just because a great drummer designed or endorses it but JoJo is purpose driven and I thought I would like it based on the description. The reported problems with the folding function kept me from getting the signature pedal but when the standard pedal was put out with a fixed post I planned to purchase.

Out of the box I didn't have to adjust much except the spring tension. After a minute of adjustment it was set. When I clamped it to the kick drum the round cam was practically touching the drum head. It was so close I had to kneel down to make sure it wasn't. I could back the pedal off a little more in the clamp if it was a problem but it was fine. Right away the pedal felt great. The action is smooth and quiet and I felt comfortable playing 1/16s quickly. It has more power than I expected since I read that was a problem for some drummers but I also play rock and funk so I don't have a heavy foot. The JoJo pedal feels like a bigger and better change than I expected coming from a direct drive pedal. I'm really happy with it so far.

Best feeling pedal on the market

By SG from Washington DC
Music Background: Semi-pro with 20+ years of gigging experience

I bought the signature version of this pedal last year, and the collapsible version is great, but it's a little inconvenient when playing on backline kits or kits in rehearsal studios that have drums of different makes. The hoop attachment on the signature is cumbersome to adjust in these instances, but the standard is a breeze. Both types have the same pedal action, which is the best I've played. The DW 5000s and Tama Iron Cobras I've used in the past are great products, but in terms of feel the Mayer pedals take the cake. Mind you, I'm not a super heavy player nor am I a touring drummer. If I was, I might go with a heftier pedal, but this product is plenty durable for this weekend warrior. Highly recommended

The pedal I've been waiting for

By Jeremy S. from Burlington, CT
Music Background: Drums 25 years

I had read some good reviews for this pedal and decided to give it a shot, and am extremely happy that I did. Perhaps the most telling thing I can say about this pedal is that it felt like it's been my pedal for years. Absolutely zero time to get used to it, and perhaps the first pedal I have used that actually feels like an extension of my foot. Oh, and it's dead quiet. Jojo and Sonor have built what I would consider a perfect kick pedal. I should note that I opted to get this version that does not fold because I had heard there are people who had trouble with the folding version. None of my other pedals folded, so I didn't see that as a necessary feature. If you are even considering this pedal, I would recommend to give it a shot.

Perfect balance standard pedal

By Paul L. from Potsdam NY
Music Background: Contemporary Christian, Rock, Jazz

I have to say that this pedal is the most fluid and sensitive pedal I have ever played. It's so smooth I have to refrain from overusing while I'm performing! I've used tama speed cobra, DW 5000 and Ludwig speed king along with many other brands, and they are not even close in regards to this pedals speed and accuracy. Even though I can't review its durability long term, I feel confident it will perform well because it is very well built and solid. I highly recommend this pedal. It's priced right! Go get it!
