JHS PackRat 9-way Distortion Pedal - Black Reviews

Rodent-style Distortion Guitar Pedal with Volume and Filter Controls and 9 Modes - Black

The JHS PackRat aims to solve the riddle, "How many rodents can you stuff into a single stompbox?" The answer is apparently nine, because that's how many rodent-style tones you can coax out of this distortion pedal. Like the Muffuletta did for fuzzes and the Bonsai did for green overdrives, the PackRat supplies you with a myriad of Rattus norvegicus-style sonic textures. This flexible stomp really burns, able to churn out mild overdrive, metallic grind, and cacophonous fuzz with equal aplomb, leaning on four decades of tried-and-true — and some quite rare — ratty tones. Best of all, the PackRat doesn't use digital modeling. Rather, it boasts the exact same components as the source units. So, when you select a mode with the PackRat's rotary control, your guitar signal actually passes through a replica of the original pedal's circuitry. Just about every pedalboard has a large-mouse-like stompbox on it, but with the JHS PackRat, you can have all the rodents.

Love me options

By Daniel E. from SAINT CHARLES, MO
Music Background: Old school Metal Head

Great pedal. I love the 9 effect modes it has. My fav so far is the LA mode. Nice and thick. JHS killed it with one. Ill be getting the Bonsai pedal they have as well. Its also a 9 mode pedal. So, overall, Packrat is amazing. Grab one and make some killer riffs!!

Fantastic pedal, with one little gripe

By Maximillian G. from Oakland, CA
Music Background: Semi-Professional

This thing totally delivers what it promises. A hugely versatile array of RAT variations that all sound great.

My only complaint is that the filter knob changes directions depending on the model you select. Sometimes turning the knob to the right cuts high end, sometimes turning it to the left cuts high end. I totally understand that they're trying to be authentic to each circuit, but they easily could have just wired the filter knob backwards for certain circuits to standardize this. I don't think anyone would complain that the filter knob is different for a particular circuit if it's still functionally identical.

The filter changing directions is just annoying when you're trying to dial in a sound. You turn through the different circuits and you not only have to match output volume (an unavoidable side effect of having different circuits), but have to then adjust the filter to match the setting you just had. It just adds unnecessary friction. In my opinion this was a superficial design choice instead of a functional one.

Still a great pedal that I love using! Just couldn't resist the opportunity to give feedback on the one thing that bugs me

Fantastic sounds at almost every setting

By Michael from Maryland
Music Background: Intermediate/Advanced Guitarist

It's hard to make a bad sound on this thing. The rats here are varied enough to justify their existence, and the sounds are usable across the entire span of the distortion knob. Turning the filter one or extreme or the other can get pretty ice picky or muddy, but it's probably better for that knob to have a wider band of sounds. My favorite so far is the Turbo Rat, as it cleans up the best with light picking, but gets heavy when digging in.

My only real complaint is that it seems very susceptible to interference when using non-isolated power supplies. I tried with two basic single-plug power supplies that came with other pedals, and both gave me a nasty high pitched sound while the unit was on. It was the only pedal in the chain. My Boss OD-200 on a higher distortion setting doesn't have that issue. However, plugging into the isolated power supply on my board completely fixed it, and I was planning to have this live on my board anyways. So maybe be aware of that if you have some dirty power.

It Rats

By Sweetwater Customer

I can't make any claim as to how well the multiple versions match, but as someone who has used the standard proco rat for 20 years, this is it. You get the same low end "mush" with the ability to add bite over the top. I'm sure someone can tell a difference, but I can't.

I've really enjoyed the LA model, as it seems to be very dynamic and allows for a lot variation. It's definitely more than I wanted to pay for a new rat, but after many failed proco units over the years I decided it was time to see if this version will hold up better.

My only complaint is the major volume differences between each mode, and having to adjust each time. The volume variances are more than expected. As others have stated this is not a knob I'm turning during a performance, so it's not a major detractor for me, but it's good to know in case your dream is to strum a chord and roll through rat models.

packs a whopper

The rat pack is everything you need to explore a variety of possibilities. The overall value is legit and I couldn't be happier for the purchase.

Meh

By Sweetwater Customer

I was going to return this but the packaging got thrown out accidentally. If I were to do it all over again, I'd probably have gotten the pro co rat, which is a lot cheaper and less complex.

Ludicrously good

By Yoshi from Orlando, FL

I can't believe how amazing this pedal is. I have several other drive / distortion pedals and I might as well just toss them now that I have this. no need to chain drive pedals anymore - just use this - the sound quality is fantastic and the options are huge.

Probably not what it was designed for....

By TW H. from Grand Rapids, Michigan
Music Background: Weird Rock

This pedal is awesome. I used the Whiteface setting as a boost in combination with the Keeley Dark Side pedal, add in a Catalinbread Echorec and a Dawner Prince Pulse... and the "Sorrow" tone is there. As a boost, I used it on every song on Evolve Sound's album "Sputnik Chronicles."

Versatile Rat

By Mike from East coast

It's a Swiss Army Rat - really. Love having the flexibility b/w OG and the JHS, and many in between - and love having the filter to tweak. My ears like it. Enough said, go play.

The Brat is my favorite?

By Kelvin M. from Indianapolis, IN

That weird pink pedal from the 90's is my favorite Rat? Who knew? Well, Josh Scott, maybe. It really is cool to try a bunch of RAT pedals. Definitely worth a t!

JHS Pack Rat

By Steve E. from PA

Solidly built pedal that can produce just about any Distortion tone you would ever need. The kind of quality I've come to expect from JHS. I currently have 9 JHS pedals.

Awesome pedal

By Jason H. from EAST LIVERPOOL, OH

As soon as I saw this pedal I knew I needed it. When I finally pulled the trigger and bought it, all I could think is why did I wait?

Each of the settings are unique. The OG, White Face, Brat and LA all pair very nicely with my OR15. This is not an amp that most would describe as a pedal platform.

When using it with my AC30, all 9 options sound great.

I love my Ratpack and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a pedal that can do multiple things.

Now my dilemma is deciding if I should buy a second one.

JHS has created a monster!

By Evan W.
Music Background: There are simply too many notes.

I love what JHS is doing with these best of pedals. I wasn't a Big Muff or a Tube Screamer guy but did own an Original RAT and ended up selling it because I needed to eat and wasn't thinking about how 30 years from now all the pedals I currently own would become sought after collector's items.

I remember using that pedal with my Peavy Special 150 that had a gain section but not like the RAT, just saturated and raunchy. My favorite settings are the OG and the DIRTY with honorable mention going to the TURBO and BRAT sections.

So if you'd favored a RAT in the past you can hardly go wrong with this offering since there are literally nine pedals in one.

So much rat, you’ll need some cheese and a group of turtles.

By daniel c.
Music Background: 25 years guitar, bass drums, home recording.

Amazing pedal, so many options. Authentic representation of all different rat distortion pedals. It sounds great In front of my vox ac30 with my gibson sg, not so much with my majesty 7 in front of my mesa boogie mark v. I suspect some minor tweaking is all it will take to get it dialled in with that combination though.

If you don't know what rat distortion is, check it out. Gritty, loud, versatile, awesome.

Simple and Deep

By Sweetwater Customer from Ohio
Music Background: Old, Old, Old guy with a Tool-Gilmour-Fripp fetish.

I was there when they first came out and I bought one of these the day of release. It covers territory you will never know you wanted until you have it. The stupid level of usefulness will convert you ... or you need a Metal Zone. At least you'll KNOW for certain. Just buy it. Amazing achievement.

Ratastic!

By Timothy B. from Raleigh, NC

45 years of guitar and somehow I missed the Rat. So JHS releases the PackRat and I am intrigued. Josh really sells the Rat. He says if you can't afford the Packrat, the ProCo Rats are cheap. So I got a ProCo Rat and loved it. I then sold a pedal to help finance the Packrat. I am floored. I never imagined any electric guitar could sound as good and powerful as the Landgraff MO'D patch. But they are all usable. The original Rats models are best if you want the more clean edge of break up sounds. Wow. This pedal does it for me. How many of us have been conned into using Screamers for years just because Stevie liked them? Rats rule. This pedal is infested with them. It is hard to describe how hard it is to put a guitar down once you start playing through this pedal. Thanks to Patrick Cobley and Sweetwater for getting this to me quick when it was on backorder.

Bubonic plague

Nasty, dirt, vermin at your finger tips. Great for heavy and stoner rock. Somewhere between distortion and fuzz and every mode has a different version of it. Great!

You need this pedal!

By Frank B. from Happy Valley, OR
Music Background: Mas rapido, toothpaste 2000, cowboy&spin girl, the riff doctors.

This thing is freaking great! I had the original big box rat and the white face back in the 80s& they're both restored here with 7 more mutations. Combining 9 different pedals into one is sheer genius. They're all different& they're all great! Great job!

Amazing Distortion Pedal

By Sweetwater Customer

If you like the RAT pedal, you will love this pedal. Having nine different versions of the RAT in one box is great for the studio and live performances. I find that certain guitars sound better with certain versions of the RAT. This is absolutely a great addition to any pedal board or studio rig.

You can buy a lot of rats or just buy a Pack Rat

By Dwayne M. from Phx, PA

There are a lot of pickup combinations and arrangements and they don't all sound good through the same pedals. You can buy all the rats or just buy a PackRat and spin through all the settings to achieve that amazing rat overdrive drive and voice on each of your guitars and settings. Ya, this pedal is worth it!!!! If I want to make a dedicated board for a given guitar, I may start with this or the bonsai to get the sound I need and then sometimes buy the real pedal for less to make that dedicated board; or just use this pedal. The Caroline setting can make some amazing washy mid freq overtones when driven hard; amazing tone (your milage may very)!!

Brilliant!

By Andrew from Orlando, FL

Just flat-out amazed with what JHS has put together in this one. It's history in a box, and it's modern.
No wonder the preorders are deep! It sounds absolutely fantastic, from some low end smooth cream tones to that rat-tastic crunch. The sustain and sonic nuance you get through the PackRat is nothing but impressive too. Very. Well. Done.

Versatile

By Sweetwater Customer

If you are someone who does not use distortion all of the time; this is the only distortion pedal that you will ever need. If you always use distortion, it is a perfect addition. Fabulous ... no issues.

Amazinnnnnng Pedal

By James T. from Lutz, FL
Music Background: Hobbyist, jam parties.

First a shout out to my sales rep Kent. Awesome guy. I snatched up a demo pedla when the new ones were out of stock and back ordered for a long time.
Well I received the pedal and it sounds soooooo gooood.

Im playing through a prs se standard through a carvin Belair and this pedal was a great addition.

Admittedly I've never owned an original rat before but have owned a ds1 for awhile. The demos had me sold on this. High gain distortion and fuzz in one pedal. Sold!

Out of the 9 modes my favorite so far is the white face. It suits my current gain stage and tone I'm seeking for perfectly. My favorite sound on this setting is setting distortion to about 1 to 2 and tone at noonish. Very articulate distortion. With a coil tapped neck pickup this thing sings!

I played through the other modes and all are good but my favorites are white face, brat, dirty rat, LA and jhs mod.

The only downside is that you get a noticeable popping sound when switching between the modes. This doesn't matter as you are not going to perform and switch modes at same time.

This is my second jhs pedal and am totally enamored by it.

If you are on the fence call your sweetwater rep but im going to tell you to just buy it and buy it now!

Well played

By Sweetwater Customer

I've been wanting to try the Rat pedals but didn't want to invest in all of them just to hear what they're like. I think these multi pedals by JHS are so great for that. The build quality is great and the sounds are awesome. I love it and would definitely recommend it to others looking to get those classic RAT sounds.

The Rat you didn't know you needed

By Dan P. from Grand Rapids, MI
Music Background: Dabbler in the Acoustic Arts

This pedal is now my go to pedal for dirt for both guitar and bass. On bass is just wants to kick me in the head and take my lunch money it's so aggressive. Yet, it doesn't get muddy at all. All of the various "flavors" of Rat circuit are there and the nuances are at your disposal. I really like the Carolina setting. It's different enough to really set it apart and it has a killer tone.

Get it. You will NOT be sorry.

More Rats than the NYC Subway

By Pul
Music Background: Singer-Songwriter, home hobbyist and home studio recording

Do you need a Rat? How about 9? How about all the flavors of Rat you could ever want? The classic distortion has seen Josh Scott's obsessive treatment and he has provided exact analog reproductions of some of the coolest Rats and their variants asking with some amazing modded versions. Each one is amazing, has a unique feel, and will get those perfectly distorted tones. Amazingly simple and perfect sounding. For reference I play through a Morgan AC20 (think Vox AC15 tones) and it's everything I want in a distortion. Highly recommended!

King Rat

By Jae from Connecticut
Music Background: Active performing band.

Context: I have a Whiteface Reissue and Big Box Rat. With all the OD/distortion/fuzz pedals I have, I had forgotten about my Rats, but when I saw that JHS was coming out with a multi-version pedal, I broke out my Rats to see if I'd want to bring a Rat forward. When I started using Rats way back when I started playing, I used it for a distortion box, just cranking the distortion and using it that way. Over the years, I became a Fuzz Face fiend and got into dynamics and use of the guitar's volume control to clean up and get a range of tones from a single pedal. This is how I am reviewing and using my Rats now and the JHS PackRat.

Although I probably will never A/B the PackRat against my Whiteface or Big Box, I can say that the PackRat has a wide variety of Rat flavors and responses. I've compared the various settings with the intent of getting the most musical clean up possible with my volume knob (currently using PRS Core 594s). My favorite settings for now are the JHS and Dirty Rat. With knobs at noon or 1 o'clock, they give me exactly what I'm looking for: edge of breakup clean up and heavier drive for rhythm/lead. I play it like I would a Fuzz Face and it works great in that regard, to the point where it currently the only drive on my pedalboard.

If you play Fuzz Faces the way I do, or simply like Rats, I recommend this pedal without reservation. Best pedal purchase I've made in a while.

Very good just not for me

By Rob

I love JHS and the build quality is spectacular. I've never owned a Rat pedal and figured this was the best way to give it a shot. The tone is very good but I just don't think it's my sort of sound. If you love Rat pedals I think you'll love this one but it's not going to work for everyone

All the options you’d expect from 9 modes

By Nicholas W. from New York, NY

Having wanted a Rat for a while, I took the plunge and decided to go for something that would (hopefully) give me the Rat sound and beyond. Couldn't be happier with my decision. Each of the modes brings something different to the table, it really is like having 9 different pedals.

Despite all it's rage....

By Nathan from Ellettsville, IN
Music Background: Hobbyist/tech

Still just a bunch of rats in a box.

Let me get the 'bad' out of the way. The switch is a 'momentary' switch which defaults to off. I hate when pedals do this verses using a latching on/off switch. I use a multi-pedal switcher, so I really want my pedals to be on by default. This one is off by default which means I have to press it every time I power on my rig. Yeah, this sounds nitpicky, but it's annoying to me. The JHS Bonsai and Muffuletta both use latching, so I'm not sure why this one doesn't. AND ANOTHER THING... why don't the eyes glow red. Missed opportunity of the year.

Now the good.... literally everything else about this pedal. I won't go into too much details on each of the modes as Sweetwater/JHS already did, but I will say the LA is easily my favorite so far. It's such a full/cutting tone that sounds fantastic rhythm or lead. The rest all sound fantastic.

There are some other multi-rat pedals on the market, but this form factor and design is fantastic. Easy to use and sounds amazing. I can't really ask for more.
