PEAVEY 14AT, 14BT RACK KIT

By SC from PA
Music Background: I've been a semi-professional musician for nearly 50 years.

Purchased to use with a brand new Peavey 14BT mixer. Waited months for the rack kit to be back in stock (not Sweetwater's fault, more a Peavey production issue). First off, the generic instructions stated the following: "Remove screws from each end of the mixer at the location shown and remove end bells. Align holes in rack ears with holes from which the screws have been removed. Reinstall the same screws and tighten securely, but do not over tighten. Remove the highlighted screws and replace them with the screws included in the rack mount kit as instructed. NOTE: While the mixer end bells are completely off try and avoid touching any internal components." You got that, right?! For starters, the diagram in the instructions was for a Peavey 10AT. The screws shown in the 10AT diagram were in DIFFERENT LOCATIONS than the end bells screws on a 14BT. Furthermore, the holes in the rack ears did not match the instruction diagram's highlighted screws nor did they correspond to the screws removed fromthe 14BT either. Basically you are on your own, and you MUST remove ALL the screws to get the original end bells off, but can only guess WHICH screws to reinstall WHERE to attach the rack ears. Why would THIS be a problem? Have I mentioned the screws originally taken off the mixer are shorter AND have a different thread size than the screws included in the rack mount kit? After shearing off one of the longer rack mount kit screws (I guess that is how you learn where to use the shorter, original screws) and then through much (frustrating) trial and error, the rack ears were finally attached to the mixer. What should have taken 10 minutes took nearly an hour. Installing my new rack kit equipped 14BT mixer into a $ SKB mixer case, I then find the holes in Peavey rack ears are just a mm too narrow to fit the 19" standard rail width. (And it is not the SKB as every other piece of rack gear in the case fits perfectly.) The rack mount kit box said "Made in USA" but I am thinking they may just be talking about the box, not what is inside. At $ this kit gets very low marks. Frankly, the rack ears should have been included with the mixer. At least then there would have been reasonable assurance that the same people who built the mixer would have probaby made the rack ears as well -- and the parts and screws provided would fit properly. And for Pete's sake, correct the instructions and diagrams provided. NEEDS BIG IMPROVEMENT.
