Oh my goodness

By Hinterkaifeck

Let me preface, my favorite tones are late 60's British Invasion and American Rock: Syd Barrett, Beatles, Love, Pretty Things, Kinks, Byrds…
I love unapologetically bright jangly guitars. I've tried everything on my Custom Shop Telecasters and no matter the hype, something was missing. I played an AVII 51 Telecaster special edition with Texas Specials and I couldn't believe it, the best Tele tone I've heard in person.
I tried these pickups about a decade ago and they were bass heavy and dull. I'm convinced that Fender updated them. I bought a set for a Blackguard reissue and it's just as the AVII, the best pickups I've ever heard for a Telecaster.
What makes them special is that they are powerful while remaining bright and chimey, no annoying bass content. Usually powerful Tele pickups compromise high end frequencies but that's not the case here. If anything, they're brighter and more authentic sounding to a real vintage guitar.

I'm totally impressed with the sound of these. They completed my Partscaster build. Very high output and clean, rich tone.
I had so many pickup choices, but glad I chose these. You won't be disappointed by the clean and loud output

Awesome

By James from Texas

The only other pickups I'll buy beside these are the twisted tele and these again. They have an awesome sound and it's exactly what I wanted as for a sound.

Amazing tone

By Cody K.

I installed these in a Squier project guitar with a four-way switch, the installation was super easy, and they sounded great, with a really twangy tone on the bridge and a warm neck tone!!

Doesn't come with screws for mounting in pickguard.

By Kevin I. from KY
Music Background: I'm 59 and have been playing music since 3rd grade.

These pickups sound alright, but they only have wood screws and tubing for mounting the bridge pickup directly in the body as in a vintage telecaster. They don't include machine screws or tubing for mounting the bridge pickup in the pickguard, like a normal, modern tele pickguard has holes for. This delayed my partscaster build by 4 days and I wasn't happy about that at all and had to make it work and I'm still not happy about it. So no, it doesn't come with the hardware that is needed.

Fender Texas Special Telecaster 2-piece Pickup Set

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Former drummer for 40 years. New on guitar. Operate home recording studio using Pro Tools 12.6 DAW.

Haven't installed them yet. I'm happy that they come with all wiring pre-soldered so that I don't have to add any wires. They're a bit pricey and although I'd try them again I should have used good but less expensive pickups in the guitar I bought them for.

Very good sounding pickups, need .022 mfd cap

By Sean from NJ
Music Background: Hobbyist

I put these pickups in a Warmoth telecaster I built. I consider them pretty well built, maybe not quite as well built as Lindy Fralin pickups I've used, but these have the overwound tone I was looking for. Speaking of which, overwound pickups, are a bit darker sounding than normal wound. Chords were a bit muddy with the 0.047 capacitor that came with the Emerson 4 way pot kit I used. So, I swapped out the Emerson .047 cap for a .022 (yellow label) and that really added a lot of sparkle. I'd say a must have for overwound pickups like these. Very satisfied with the tone of everything.

Amazed at the improvement!

By Lee G. from Tennessee

I just got my MIM Telecaster back from tech this weekend and was blown away. My good guitar became a great guitar with the addition of the Texas Special pups and a 4-way switch. The versatility in tones (I mainly play blues and old rock) is amazing. Well worth the money, and by all means include the 4-way switch; the bridge and neck pups in series position is delicious!

Fender Custom Shop Texas Special Telecaster pickups

By Len from Orland Park. Illinois
Music Background: 50 years of hacking away

Replaced stock pickups on my 1998 MIM Tele with these. Unless you"re looking for a vintage Tele sound ( which is nice but a little thin sounding), these are the ones you want! They"ll handle anything you throw at them. from clean to to heavy overdrive. Set them a bit low to get the most out of them. Very pleased!!!!!

Love love love

By Babul M. from San Antonio, TX

I purchased this along with an Emerson Custom 4-way Prewired Kit for Telecaster Guitars - 250k Pots. All of this going onto a Squire Custom Vibe Tele, that I just was never happy with.

I handed the parts over to my favorite guitar tech, and a few days later VOILA! The most amazing Tele I have ever played! I could not be any happier. This is the most versatile tonal guitar now - it's happy clean, crunchy, dirty, brown, gnarly, fuzzy and everything in between. I've never had tone or volume pots which let me fine tune my sound to such an amazing degree. The pots turn like you always imagined they should :D Noise or hum is not an issue - aside from the usual single coilness. I've had a few other guitarists come try it, and all are equally amazed.

I took an expensive gamble, and it worked out beyond what I imagined. It's like MY perfect Tele. I can't imagine finding a guitar off the rack, under $1500, anywhere near as nice or as versatile as this. This is my new go-to guitar.

Texas Tele Pickups

By Sweetwater Customer

The pickups sound fantastic. One step dirtier than the stock pickups on the American Standard tele, they do a great job of ranging from a decent clean to a decent overdriven sound. In that sense I think they are more versatile than the stock American Standard pickups which more heavily trend towards the clean.

Excellent sound! Blues, rock and that Grand Ole Opry twang!

By Rich from Denver, CO
Music Background: retired musician

Put a set of these in a Squier Telecaster and it sounds exactly as I had hoped, and was expecting from the name. I'm very familiar with Billy Gibbon's Tele sounds and these babies will give it to you. That "Blue Jean Blues" sound is captured perfectly.

Just the right amount of heat in these, overdrive sounds very good too on the bridge pup. But the neck pup (and the combo of both) is where the magic is.

I wasn't sure if it would be there, but yes you still get the Tele twang big time. Setting your string action very low has a lot to do with that sound too and this rig pulls it off. So if' you're thinking about this too, I have no regrets spending this kind of money for the results I've gotten.

Don't raise the pups as high as you might think you want to, you'll get a muddy sound. Lower them and they ring like a bell, there's definitely a sweet spot for both.

My only complaint, the replacement screws they give you for the pickup height adjusters were slotted screws, not phillips. And no you can't use the screws that came out of the factory pups. I hate slotted screws close to fine woodwork. It's has to happen, a slip and a nick. Other than that I love these pickups, can't stop playing!
