That elusive sound found for me

By david o. from denver, CO
Music Background: Part time gigging musician

Ok, 4 strats in my arsenal. 2 Custom, 1 a parts caster, 1 the real deal. These pickups went into my newer custom - all my strats have ash bodies, 2 have maple finger boards, 2 are rosewood. The Tex Mex brought me the elusive 'chimey' sound (probably mostly due to how I play/pick) but none-the-less, these pickups brought the 'goods'. These are not thin sounding in the least but full with the high's that I'd been missing. I'm a big fan of these PUP's.

I like them

By Pedro W. from Florida
Music Background: country music

Overall I am pleased with this pickup set.

Side note:
I had ordered some from Fender directly (Deluxe Drive for Telecaster) and the wire on one pickup was literally one inch and a half long.
Disappointing.
So I am glad that the ones from Sweetwater came with proper wire length!
So I had to cut it and solder another wire I had laying around.

Back to the Tex-Mex for Stratocaster.
It is a definite improvement on my Squier Sonic series hard tail Stratocaster.
I'm not crazy about the ceramic stick pickups, they have a "plastic" sound to my ears.
So this upgrade makes it sound less like a "beginner" guitar.
I'm giving 4 stars because they are not as "good" as the Tex-Mex pickups for the telecaster.
I understand I am not comparing apples to apples, but these did not WOW me as did the Telecaster set of Tex-Mex pickups.
That said, these are a SOLID 4 star pickup set.
If I had to give them a grade it would be B+
And I am only giving it this rating because of my bias to the Telecaster as I mostly play country music.

So what would it take for me to rate it 5 stars.
Perhaps a punchier overall tone.

But in conclusion , I am happy with this set and I would recommend for this price point.

Very Good!

By Sweetwater Customer from California
Music Background: Music Enthusiast for many years

I can tell you many things about this pickups but judge yourself. I swap the ceramic stock pickups in my MIM Strat with this Tex Mex and couldn't be more happy. But watch my video attached and judge for yourself. There is some reverb and compression on the guitar nothing heavy.

Blown Away!!!

By FATTSCOTT from NJ
Music Background: Guitar 25yrs on and off playing.

I have a Squier Affinity Stratocaster, that I originally bought because it was a HSS. Long to short, I wasn't happy with the ceramic pups,so I did some research and decided to get the Tex-Mex loaded pickguard. It has a 11 hole pickguard, so it will fit in a Squier The pots are 500K,250K in the Squire which didn't do much on tone control! After a quick string change an swapped out the original pups and pots, She was a guitar: the Quack, Bark, Moan an snap, not to mention the amount of tone control. I recommend anyone who likes Blues and Classic rock, to give them a try. Also, I found this out after installing them that Fenders SRV Stratocaster model came with those pups an pots. That should give you an idea of the Bite this setup has.

Tex mex strat set

By Steven from Nashville

Fat tone... Can't beat it. I'll say you can buy the loaded PG for $ and if I do it again I'll go that route.

Good pickups

By Dustin F. from Behind Enemy Lines

I bought these just to try something different, and they sound great. I had them in one of my guitars for about a year, then I took them out in favor of some custom wound pickups that sound great but are too noisy. Today I put the Tex Mex pickups back in, mainly to quiet the hum. They sound fine except the bridge is too bright. Just roll off the tone knob a little. I may indulge in a little wiring trickery at some point to simmer it down. Neck and middle are fine, though.

Good upgrade

By Dr. R.

I put them in a squire I picked up for 10 bucks. It was certainly and improvement but also somewhat shrill. After reading that others had the same problem, since it has the plastic bobbins it is easy to just tap them down a little bit. Made a lot of difference. Now it sounds like what I expected.

They sound SO GOOD

By Sam from California

I know a lot about audio but not a whole lot about guitar electronics. I had never changed pickups before. I went out on a limb and put these in an old off-brand cheap pawn shop strat I had laying around. It now sounds AMAZING. Like so fat. Night and day difference. I'm still working on getting the pickup heights right but I can already tell that these rock.

Disappointing Cheap Pickup

By Sal L. from california
Music Background: Years of collecting guitars

Bright and thin, very cheaply made with a plastic bobbin. Unpleasant sound. This pickup is the McDonalds hamburger of pickups.

Re born

By Jerry from Mexico Mo

i bought these tex mex pups to upgrade a squier strat. was a crazy good upgrade. also did new pots and a 5 way switch and the jack. I cant believe how much better the old squier sounds now. Its night and day. In my humble opinion this is all thats needed to turn a cheap guitar into a serious player. I would gig with this guitar now with no hesitation.

Put these into a Squier Strat. The installation was simple. They sound amazing and they're affordable. I upgraded my pots and switch to ensure I was getting the best sound from these pickups.

Excellent upgrade

By joseph j. from breckenridge, TX
Music Background: guitarist 30+ yrs

I bought these for a cheap Strat replica with a good body and excellent neck but cheap electronics and pickups, and I have to say WOW!! I paired these with a Emerson 5-way blender Strat kit, simple install following the provided diagram and basic soldering, and I have an instrument that now has rich tone and great Fender sounding highs and mids but with the 5-way blender I can get a large variety of tones. Highly recommend them for the price. and as usual Sweetwater is always the greatest with service. The candy bag.....Oh Yeah.

Best Low Cost Upgrade For Your Import Strat

By Customer from USA

We just purchased a second set of the Tex-Mex pickups from Sweetwater, based on the love we found for the 1st set. We prefer to add USA-Made pups to any guitar project but had a set of Fender Tex-Mex's given to us sitting on a shelf gathering dust. We had a really nice Squier with a full size body that looked great yet sounded way below par for serious live or studio use. We upgraded the pots, cap, and 5-way to USA components and was about to place an order for USA p/u's when we remembered the Tex-Mex set and gave 'em a shot. Seriously, blown away is the right rating, considering the price we see them for sale on line. Genuine Stratocaster quack and squank performance for the budget minded. Do NOT hesitate to add a set of these to your import! The bridge pup was a tad too brite for our taste, just a matter of taste, no biggie. We added a .33 capacitor, lowered the pickup a hair more than usual...and WOW, that import Squier is as quiet and WAY MORE tonally sweet as the MIM Fender I picked up to A/B the two with. So, we purchased a set from Sweetwater for a Stratzilla that we are working on, to gift a financially-challenged customer on a limited income. Best import grade pups for import guitars we have ever installed, period.

Oh my, you gotta try.

By Michael from Phx

This is a great low cost way to upgrade your Squire or Strat to a super sound. I replaced my 20th Anniversary Squire pickups with the TEX-MEX set with staggered poles and am so glad I did.

Magnificent Upgrade to Squire Standard

By Andy from Northern DE

I bought a Squire Standard Strat about 6 months ago after doing loads of internet research, and got myself over the shame I figured I'd have owning a "fake" Strat (a really silly notion to begin with, I think). Then I plugged in the beast to a decent little tube amp (Blackstar HT Studio 20), and wanted to puke....or cry. It was terrible. Shrill and unusably noisy. The stock pick-ups in those guitars are almost worthless......and now I understand a huge part of the price difference in Squires and Fenders. The guitar was beautiful.....is beautiful.....really lovely grain and finish, and it feels nice. So I bought these Tex-Mex pick-ups. And I was still going to sell the thing, realizing that installing them was beyond my skill set and/or level of interest. Bit the bullet, and paid someone to install them, and........yowza. It simply is no exaggeration to say that this is a completely different guitar now. The sounds from each pick-up position are rich, and clear and balanced, and the excessive noise is gone. I am playing through the same amp, which I upgraded with an A-Type Celestion speaker, and the result is that I have taken the guitar off of all the sites I was selling it on. Wonderful sound...period. Now I just need to replace the terrible tuners:/

By Istvan

Considering that these replaced the ones on my Squier Bullet Strat I have ro say Im sold on them. They are a huge improvement in sound. Important to have your guitar pretty well set up so that you can enjoy these. I just installed mine and Im getting use to them. But in all there great for the price.
