Cracks like a whip
I saw this snare in a YouTube shootout years ago and fell in love with the look and sound. Having it in real life is a dream come true, especially with how great it looks. I have changed the snare wires, heads and changed the sound a little bit, and now it's just the way I like it. Has an awesome tight sound whether it's tuned low or high. After owning it for several years I have kept it in a higher tuning and have preferred that. Highly recommended snare.
Nice Drum
Just received. Sounds great nice warm crack nice sensitivity too. Great drum for the price!
A Unique and Excellent Snare
I have been playing with this Pork Pie snare in a PDP Concept Maple 7-piece kit for a few years now and it is my go-to snare. It has a great "crack" attack and "after-ring" tone to it that I haven't heard in other snares I have tried. No gel or other dampening necessary. I also found that it sounded the best with the original head. I tried an Evans head that I put on other snares and it took some of the tone away. I put the single-ply original head back on and all the tone came right back, so I have left that head on (which I think is a branded Remo Ambassador?).
I use the original PDP Concept Maple snare for its dry snap and crack and this Pork Pie for the musical after-ring tone that it has.
I saw this model in a demonstration video of someone's opinion of the five best snares. The other 4 snares were $1,200 and above. That piqued my interest. I've tried this and a 13" version that was available at the time but, I preferred the sound of the 14".
It's a matter of personal preference, but do prefer the DW/PDP Mag throw-off style strainer, rather than the lever style this snare has. Overall, this is a 5-star quality snare.
Amazing!
This snare is ridiculous! It sounds amazing right out of the box. I tuned it up to a higher tuning and it immediately sounded like a cannon. It looks great behind the kit too. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a reasonably priced maple snare.
Excellent Snare, however . . .
This Pork Pie Snare Drum is an incredible snare with a deep, rich tone and with the right heads and careful tuning it required zero muffling to dial in the sound I was looking for tuned high. The only issue is the snare throw-off. When you get the snares tight enough to get a good snare sound without any rattling or unpleasant snare buzz and well before choking out the drum, you can't throw the snare wires off to get them completely disengaged if you want to play with no snares. This can be remedied with a DW Universal Mini-Mag Throw Off replacement, but in my case since I never play with the snares off, I'm leaving the original strainer in place for the awesome retro look if nothing else. Thank you Sweetwater for the many years of incredible service!
