Intuitive and versatile pedal with a limitation

By Sweetwater Customer

This is an easy to use pedal with a clever interface that doesn't require menu diving. if you want to tweak your settings, though, there is a decent app for that purpose. My main issue is that, apart from the Clean and Special settings, the amps don't sound all that great, at least for the stuff that I do. More frustrating is that it is pretty much impossible to get a fully clean sound a la a Fender Twin or a Roland Jazz Chorus. This is because the Drive setting in the app has a volume-like function such that turning it off also turns off all of the volume. Hopefully, a software update will address this issue.

Another Excellent Line 6 Product

By Old R. from Brooklyn, NY
Music Background: A few short-lived bands in the 70's - 90s

Just beginning to explore this. Thus far, very happy with it and have plans!
I will have go to the stationary store to have the Users Manual printed out, though.
Reminds me of a short Schlitz documentary I watched recently.
Too bad you no longer manufacture the Liverpool Mop Top. The "Screaming Blonde" is like a portable classroom and is keeping me busy. Does that make sense?

Finally one I can use.

By Sweetwater Customer

I've tried a series of disappointing inexpensive multieffects boxes over the years. I got a little use out of some of them, but this one, finally is one that I actually use. Most of the sounds it can produce are things I'll never use (crunch, heavy, phaser...). But the delays, reverb, and chorus are easily dialed into give me just what I want to hear. The lights around the middle that tell you how much you're using really work well. The tuner is very usable. The gain controls and the boost get you plenty of clean sound that you can dirty up just the right amount. I've never thought of myself as an electric guitar player, but this box is changing my mind about that. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Noise gate puts it over the top

By Tim H. from Alum Creek, WV
Music Background: Blues desciple

Great sounds going into an amp (with amp modeling off). The distortion works great for me with lots of warm grit. Effects sound good especially the verbs. What really surprised me was the premium noise gate that cleaned up my board. Even though it has a multifingered editing approach that takes time to learn (do yourself a favor and watch the YouTube videos), I appreciate the small size and cost effectiveness (minus a screen). I am very happy - this turned out to be the pedal that will always stay. The right promotion would entice me to buy a second one in black for the same board.

Better Than The IR2! Still Not Quite There

By Jim B. from GALLOWAY, OH

So I started my amp sim journey with a Boss IR@ and I thought not bad, but nothing blew me away and it was kind of limited. For the money, this one is much better! Much more versatile and has built in effects! The reverbs are great, unlike the IR2, and so is the chorus, flanger, and phaser. When you connect to the app and dial it in on your phone, even unlocks more potential. I almost think you could gig with this thing if you had to! Only 4 stars as when I try to lay down the heavy and go high gain, it is lacking a bit, but is better than the IR2. I understand they now make a black version of this and it hits that mark better than this one does. Still for under $, this is fairly impressive. I have since purchased a $ Hotone Ampero, and that is a whole different animal compared to this. I highly recommend those!

Small and Powerful

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Playing guitar for over 50 years. Performing in a duo act and in over a dozen variety bands. I have a moderate guitar collection and have also designed, built and sold electric guitars through the years.

I have owned and used multi-effects pedals before to mixed reviews. I also created a small pedal board for analog pedals and used that for live performances in various bands. When I found this compact pedal from Line 6, I had to see if it measured up to the sounds in their more expensive units. It does! It takes up very little space on a pedal board and has all the tools to help you create stellar sounds. It is easy to use and does not disappoint. I will enjoy creating and tweaking patches for a long time!

Nothing new to say except I would really prefer a "Classic" version loaded with Fender, Vox, and Marshall models. Other than that, it really is a super useful product!

The Rockman Amp I Always Wanted

By Sweetwater Customer

THIS is the perfect practice box for guitarists wanting to plug direct in and out to headphones. Takes batteries, so this really is not strictly meant for a pedalboard for me as much as it is meant to sit on the couch with batteries, a 3 foot guitar cord and a set of cans (over ear headphones). Super intuitive user interface kets me dial in everything I have on my pedalboard. The sound is fantastic and I can't stop going to this little box instead of my tube amps. What a dream. A Rockman headphone anp with built in effects and high fidelity sound. Get it! It's that good!

wasn't sure what to expect

By Sweetwater Customer from North Carolina

I wanted something much simpler than my helix. I mostly use the amp modeling and boost/overdrive. I also like the reverb. I don't use the delay because I use a separate delay pedal that gives me more precise control. I haven't really messed with setting up different patches; the amp settings give me what I need.

Buggy

By George

Twice now I have reassigned the right button (tap) to 'bypass' via the edit software. The pedal works fine for a time or two then it goes dead and takes the entire pedal board with it until you do a factory reset.

Overall it's a buy but could use improvement

By George L. from LEBANON, OR

First, I like the pedal and do recommend it, especially at the sale price as I don't think I would pay the full price for it. It sounds good, the effects are alright. I didn't like that I was forced to do a firmware update via computer before being able to use the pedal and with that also register my name on their web site. The other thing I don't care for is that there is not a way to disable tap tempo unless you install the 'edit' software and reprogram the pedal to another purpose. I did that once and was happy with the setting (I forget what it was), but in messing around with the pedal, I lost all sound so I did a factory reset and now the flashing tap tempo is back. I fixed it the old school way this time and covered the tap tempo LED with black electrical tape. It was nice that the LED's are actually slightly recessed so the tape laid nice and flat.

A very Sound

By RJ
Music Background: Worshiping the Master Creator of music

I purchased this a little over a week ago, and I haven't even previewed the Pre-sets yet. Just a little tweaking, and I picked up the sound I was looking for.
Best to get the power chord, if you plan on playing more than a few sets, but the batteries are good for playing a set or two, just remember to recharge or change them for your next session. The sound is very good, especially for the price. I'll get around to checking the pre-sets soon.

Great little multi-FX unit

By Sweetwater Customer

I needed a small multi-effects unit for my mini-board and this fit the bill nicely. I now have a little reverb on demand, a delay when needed, tremolo for one song, and a chorus for another. All this in light-weight space-saving footprint, plus a noise gate and a tuner. This is everything the HX One should have been. And I have the amp and cab sims in case my main amp goes down. Thumbs up!

Serviceable pedal at a great price

By Andrew

This pedal has proven to be serviceable and versatile for me, as a low budget worship musician. I have gotten tired of lugging a pedal board around every week and changing things up, so this has been perfect for me to streamline my process. I don't know that I would gig with this and this only if I was a more serious musician, but this is great for working through different sounds quickly. I think it's a great add, especially if you are on a budget and would like the HX Stomp but can't afford the price tag. I personally also really like having the visuals of this, I prefer to not have to adjust the pedal online or make wide adjustments to it. The controls take a little time to remember but work well and once you have it down, you will be well versed in your settings.

POD Express Guitar Pedal does it all

By Wayne L. from Mechanicsburg, PA

In stand alone mode this pedal is cool . Download the software, connect with USB and things get awesome. And then you can save your new presets that sound frickin awesome. Yes, you need to do some tinkering but that makes for some fun exploration.

And if you want to get your rig down to the minimum pedals, this pedal is a must. I've been able to model all my amp/effects (and save them as presets). Perfect.

Made my Pedalboard More Organic

By Brian D. from Ovid, NY
Music Background: Bachelor of Music

I bought the Pod Express to use as an all in one solution for band practice and maybe gigs. I play sax, guitar, and keyboards so scaled down rigs are desirable. However, after living with this unit for a couple weeks I have replaced the Zoom Multistomp on my Pedalboard with it and use it as an amp and cab modeler. Great organic amp sounds through the FR 12 and I'm back in my youth … jamming a Les Paul into a 4x12 with no effects. I keep trying to add dirt before hand but it just makes the sound less amp-like, so more and more I just ride the volume knob on 4 pod presets …Twin, Deluxe, Plexi, Boogie. Then i have a few special patches for songs like "Wicked Game". Fwiw the Multistomp makes a better all in one but the models aren't as good, and the Pod Express shines as an Iridium, Boss IRx alternative. Try it, if you're looking for inexpensive great sounding amp models.

Very cool little cheap modler

By Dan N. from Bonneau, SC

I got this more or less on whim based on it's crazy cheap price point but coming from a repulatable company. For what it is this thing is very cool. If you used to amp modellers usage is pretty easy to figure out. It only does one thing at time really but amps and pedals choosen here sound pretty good. This isn't going to be full on core amp modeller but it's fun to play around with a I could get through as show with it if necassary. One star off as it needs an XLR output.

By CLIFTON T. from NORTH VERNON, IN

I have had the line 6 pod express guitar for a few months, and it is so cool being able to adjust the sounds and now it's even better with the free software you can download.
The software is an easy way to get the sounds you want and save to the presets.
I absolutely love it and have a lot of fun with it.
I would definitely recommend purchasing the line 6 pod express guitar if you want plenty of sound options.

Perfect for My Needs And Then Some

By William B. from Smyrna, DE

I needed something to use in my church worship band that gave me a few options and was simple to use. This is it. I am good to go after adding rechargeable AAA batteries and an EX-1 volume pedal. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it has taken a permanent spot on my pedalboard, bumping my reverb, delay, a couple of my overdrives, and most of my modulation pedals.

Home run when used with editor app

By Mat G. from Greater Los Angeles
Music Background: Lifetime pro

I am always trying out modelers…gets to be an expensive habit, but, the all it one allure along with storage made this a solution for many gig scenarios. I originally purchased it to use on a DI pedalboard with a loop switcher to switch between my acoustic preamp and electric preamps. The idea was great but the UI in the Pod Express is a finicky nightmare to use live. Close if the best I could get at dialing in what I needed. Once I updated the firmware and tried the Pod Express Edit App, SO MUCH BETTER! It does not offer super deep dive editing but it can give you enough for dialing in Amps and effects so they are very useable, even very good! I hope Line6 continues to update features and add effects. Some dynamic processing would be great. I would love to see the addition of an analog preamp model or an acoustic instrument setting. I was also surprised at how well the gate worked. You can dial it in to not mess with your touch too much. It's obvious this was not made targeting pros being as it's all plastic and has no XLR out but heck, it could handle so many situations. The headroom it not great for clean sounds but I have found that with the app you can add volume at different stages of the signal chain and get much more clean headroom without noticeable artifacts.

A Lot of Features and Good Sounds for the Money and Space

Backup With plenty of good sounds

By Sweetwater Customer from NV

My main rig is a Helix floor, which I love. I play a small stage a couple nights a week and the Helix is a bit much (real-estate on deck AND processing power on-tap) and wanted to get something smaller, without spending STOMP money (in hindsight, STOMP might have been perfect, but at $ I couldn't justify it).

I'm properly impressed with this unit. The manual gives you all the 'extra' functions (Gate, Presence, MASTER OUT) so, much like the bean-shaped POD (which I have a 2.0 in my storage) if you dig in it is really flexible. Out-of-the-box it is a bit bright/brittle, but building my own sounds I have tamed that high-end and it sounds great.

I even dialed in a great-sounding bass patch on it, so now my usual rig for this gig (I alternate guitar on one night, bass the next) will be the same and I'll have some extra room in my case for extra cabling.

I added a two-button footswitch, which really make sthis thing quite a useful gig machine.

Unbelievable Basic Tones for Less than $200

By Robert A. from Philadelphia, PA
Music Background: 30+ year, semi-professional bluegrass banjo picker.

I already own a Helix Floor with 2 Powercabs and an HX Effects for use with a tube amp. So why did I get a POD Express?
I needed something I could throw in a gig back with a guitar to do an impromptu jam at a friends house without lugging the full rig out, get a basic tone for online lessons and practice, or take it on a trip for playing in a hotel room.
This little box checks off all the right boxes for me. It can run off batteries, has a built-in, accurate tuner and a simple looper, and I get those great Helix sounds I'm used to in a very tiny, light weight package.
There is no editor (yet?), but I find it very useful even without one - though I really hope Line 6 will produce one soon.
Its easy to dial up a good tone and has enough effects to keep things fun. I plug mine into a stereo channel on my mixer and play it through studio monitors along with YouTube videos. (...and I use the Helix Floor to control YouTube with my feet!) I also use it stereo directly into the two Powercabs without any cable fuss, because the Helix uses the Line 6 Link cable.
This would be great for someone starting out and on a budget. It will cover most genres and would work at lessons and practice at home without driving the rest of the family bonkers while working through the foundational stuff.
Besides that, I think it's just plain fun!
For less than a single average effect pedal, I have a Helix rig I can carry in a pocket. Can't beat that!

Line 6 Pod Express is Amazing

By Rich C. from Manhattan, MT
Music Background: Bedroom guitarist looking to return to Gigs for fun in my older age

I rarely write a review. But I felt that this is the most amazing practice and gig pedal that sounds fantastic with my various guitars. And with 3 double AA batteries, you can practice anywhere with a headset. Every knob has a primary and secondary (with the alt button) function. The pedal can store 21 presets that are easily modifiable. And it has a looper that is easy to use. It is hard to believe so many features in a price afordable pedal. And oh, the SOUNDs ...

Not for me

By Mike from Chicago
Music Background: Guitar player for 50 years. I play regular bar gigs.

I have a PodGo but wanted something basic for a small pedalboard. I was disappointed with the Pod Express. Some plastic housings seem robust. This might or might not be rugged enough, but it seems flimsy. (Until it breaks, how can you tell?) The real deal breaker for me is the lack of control over the effects. Other reviews mentioned this but I thought the effects would be good enough. They aren't. If there was a computer or mobile app to set up all the effects and presets, this would be a much more useful pedal. As is, it's too watered down. Maybe it is better suited for casual players who aren't that picky about dialing in their sounds. If you are a regular pedal user, you will likely be disappointed.

A Lot of Guitar Sound for a low price

By Mark K. from Beautiful Melbourne Florida
Music Background: Retired professional, loving life and my wife

My other guitar amp is a Kemper Rack. This little POD Express is not as cool as a Kemper but it's really close in a lot of the sounds it makes (both are digital amps).
LIKES
Runs on batteries (play anywhere)
Built-in headphone amp (drives Sennheiser HD650, 600, Beyer 770, Audio Technica ATH-50, 70)
Easy to use
Packed with features and nuance
Lightweight & compact
Good amp tones ranging from clean to very greasy ;-)
Very usable effects, great chorus and flange
Can act as DAW output on Mac (I don't have a music Windows PC)
Works as mono or stereo pedal
Plastic case helps break ground loops
Under $ (well under)

A very surprising amount of horsepower packed into this little package. With this box, a set of headphones and a guitar....you're rock'n!

Perfection at this price point!

By Erik W. from Hollywood, FL
Music Background: Church Guitarist. 25+ years of playing.

Been a Line6 user since the Pod 1 in the late 90s and had many pods, amps and line6 products over the decades. This is an amazing sounding practice amp. I'm testing it with using my Fender GTX 100 amp as an FRFR power amp with no amp/cab/fx on the Fender amp since this sounds way better than the fenders amp models. No fizzy distortion or weird audio artifacts like most modelers when on high gain with fx. I love how easy it is to dial in good tone in less than a minute. I would be willing to pay 3x for this in a metal case edition with a full volume knob. This may be the perfect headphone practice amp you can also gig with at church or in a venue. This is a must buy at this price point. Helix quality sounds for 1/10th the price.

Battery powered all-in-one pedal; usefulness significantly limited by several issues

By Brian W. from Cleveland
Music Background: Experienced guitarist and vocalist, playing for over 40 years

After watching a number of Youtube videos giving the Line 6 Pod Express Guitar glowing reviews, I ordered one.

This pedal has a LOT of potential. This single pedal provides a tuner, a simple looper, a number of basic effects, amp/cab sims, AND it can run on battery (3 AAs). Once I started using it, I ran into numerous issues that limit its usefulness. I am hoping that Line 6 can fix the issues below with a future firmware update. I'm running V1.01, the most current firmware as of 5/15/24.

There are 7 amp/cab sims. Two of them, "Special" and "Heavy", are Line 6 models that are noisy, so noisy that they are IMO unusable. The other five (clean, chime, dynamic, crunch, and lead) are pretty decent. My favorites are "Clean", a Fender Princeton Reverb and "Crunch", a Friedman BE-100. Enter the next issue: as you change the amp sims from clean to dirtier, the volume level goes up, WAY UP. It goes so much louder that you have to adjust levels either on the side output knob or externally with FRFR/PA. And for some reason, Line 6 decided that the channel volume knob should be set to 10 for all amps. Reducing the channel volume works, but it goes back to 10 when you change to another amp sim. The increasing levels make it challenging to use the device live, unless you limit yourself to a single amp/cab sim. I was able to work around the level issue by creating some presets that included reduced levels.

The effects provide basic distortions, modulations, delays, and reverbs. They are pretty decent, but you have almost no control over effect parameters, other than making the effect more or less intense. You basically get-what-you-get. Don't get me wrong, while simple, these are usable tones.

Each knob on the Pod Express performs three functions. You have to be very careful when setting an alternate setting i.e. an amp setting (alt knob), so you don't change the effect setting that uses the same knob. It would be SO much better if Line 6 would release an app to do this on a computer or phone vs. knobs that control 3 different things per knob.

The default for foot switch 1 is to bypass the device i.e. all effects AND amp/cab sim. I set foot switch 1 to turn all effects on/off, and I expected to be able to use the rotary knob to set amp/cab sims. Unfortunately, in this mode, amp/cab sims are disabled. I talked to Line 6 tech support. The tech indicated this was a bug and filed a bug report with their developers. If you want to use amp/cab sim ON and switch the effects on/off with the footswitch, you are out of luck.

I've had a couple instances where the device would not power up. Both times, I had a power supply connected plus weaker batteries (

Sounds are great, user interface could use work.

By Sweetwater Customer from MO

I love the way this unit sounds The amp models sound great. At the time I am writing this review there is not a computer interface that allows you to deep dive into the settings. All setting changes need to be made by manipulating multi-function knobs. Some of the more commonly adjusted parameters require holding down the alt button while simultaneously turning a knob. This will either require 2 hands or lots of one handed practice. I found that as I was finishing this adjustment and letting go my finger must have been coming off the alt button a few milliseconds before I let go of the knob causing the other parameter to be changed.

Once you get this unit programmed and your sounds saved, it will work great. I would not recommend trying to change settings on the fly, during a gig.

Pleasing Utilitarian Device

By Sweetwater Customer from New Jersey

What a pleasant surprise. Yes, it has a plastic enclosure, so deduct points for that, but I was able to find a couple of useful tones and recall the presets with a footswitch. This is a fun little backup for my Quad Cortex gigs or rehearsals and fits with additional pedals on a PT Metro 16 with a Cioks SOL underneath. The signal is sent direct to FOH and to a powered Headrush FRFR on stage for monitoring. Many thanks to my account rep Drew for his excellent customer service.

It’s confusing garbage

By Rocco F. from New Jersey
Music Background: Singer/songwriter

Well, it's a mini version of a mini version of an amp modeler and for the novice who plays at home with a Gibson Epi. Meaning if you are an established guitarist or writer you will find this unit to be another piece of gear in the junk drawer of bad mics, foot pedals and tuners that you thought were cool at the time but realized that saving that extra 800 bucks for a Kemper was probably the way to go.
The 1/32 headphone jack is useless and has zero volume versus 1000 percent gain. The presets are all over the map and the echo/tap feature is almost impossible to get rid of without stripping the parameters of every other know down to nothing. Which essentially will give you the same sound that your guitar would give you with no Line 6 at all. So if you are looking for a miracle in a little red pedal, go to a flea market and look for an old Univox fuzz box and grab that instead. Sorry Line 6, I'm not sure who you are paying to endorse these but I hope you gave them cash as well because this unit is a paperweight

Buy dinner instead

By MJK from White Plains, NY
Music Background: experienced and educated hobbiest

There may be a redeeming quality for the Pod Express but I haven't found it. Construction is cheap plastic, controls are confusing, no computer app to help, and the tones are terrible. The closest thing to a redeeming quality are the mod effects, but that's debateable. I would have returned it but one of my kids friends was excited and bought it. I'm a huge HX fan but my 2002 POD blows this thing out of the water in every regard. I literally have no idea how this thing made it out of quality control with such muddy clean tones. It's literally impossible to get a bright tone out of this thing. Have I said enough? I bought it because the IR-2 is out of stock until fall, but I've given up on cheap thrills. Tone does cost some $.

Elegant solution to many scenarios

By Mat from Greater Los Angeles
Music Background: Lifetime pro

I am a longtime Line 6 user starting in the early 90s up until today with helix. As great as my helix sounds, the footprint and weight is an issue for me. Using it in my studio at my feet is awkward also. I have many out modelers from different manufacturers, semi, have not even opened and taken out of the box yet to try, but when, the pod express became available. I got it instantly because it is so incredibly portable. It can be used in many settings. Currently, I have it on a paddleboard with an acoustic preamp and Loop switcher so I can get decent direct sounds to for live and recording by using a loop switcher for the acoustic and electric preamp rigs in a very compact space. As with all of the spider type amps, the effects lack tweak ability, so I am forced to be approximate in things like repeat feedback levels and modulation, speed and depth. The solution for that is to go a little more subtle with effects that I might normally, but the effect quality is light years beyond, what was available in the early pod units. These are great sounding effects. They just are not very adjustable. The thing that really shines are the sounds, which are remarkably similar to the helix series in Sound and feel. I do not detect latency so whatever the processor is that is running the show here, it is up to the task. The corners were definitely cut on build quality as this is a plastic box, and does not make you feel that rough treatment will be tolerated, also find for me because I am very respectful of my Gear. This could be used on a silence stage with the use of a direct box at the end of the signal chain. Levels can be balanced between your selected saved rigs and cycled through with tooth foot switches that are on board. At the moment, this unit seems to be a closed system meaning you were limited to what's on board. Line 6 has given a great selection of amps and gain stages, however so , I can't imagine there being anything that I could not dial in to taste and save in one of the presets. It also allows you to use a control pedal for volume. I think Line 6 made the right choices here to keep the price universally accessible to most players. The interface offers more access to tone shaping with hidden functions. It would be nice if this had a Bluetooth app to get some more exacting flexibility on Sounds, but that is not the purpose of this device, it's more instant playability. The one thing that would be very welcome is a clean, neutral preamp that can be used with acoustic instruments.

It’s awesome

By Jim M. from Clayton Ga

I swapped my DSL50 Stack for a paint job on a 65 Chevelle hot rod a couple of weeks ago and really missed the sound from the amp, and bought this thing as a temporary pacifier.
Tried it out tonight with headphones and drooled dip all over a $ PRS
This thing has ultimate potential.
It can make every amp combination from any album that you can think of.

It does what its supposed to do. Takes pedals pretty well. I have tried many of these amp/cab sim things and this was one of the better one for the $$$

Small But Mighty!

By Ryan from NY
Music Background: Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist

Gives me the sound I've been looking for, a nice, melodic tone. When I don't want melodic and just want fuzz, it does that too in spades. It's really surprising how good it is. Thank You to Louis and the gang at Sweetwater for always making sure my gear is on point.

Lil’ Red Fun Box Express

By Chris W. from White Hall
Music Background: Worship Leader

I've been having fun exploring this one from the good people at Line 6. I pretty much stick to the clean amp and then use some OD or Distortion with some reverb and perhaps some delay. All the sounds are very good to my ears though. You just have to take a little time dialing your own tones in. I let our much younger guitar player use it for Easter morning service at our church just going direct to the mixer and it sounded great. He had only tried it once during rehearsal two days prior and he had it figured out in no time. It's a great rehearsal tool and valuable piece to have for a worship leader to loan out to team members. The plastic case seems like it would hold up if you are careful about handling it. I suggest that you get yourself one too.

A great sounding pedal, but cheap construction

By Dave H. from Chicago, IL
Music Background: Multi-instrumentalist, live performer, producer.

I have to say I am impressed with the ease of use and the quality of sounds this pedal produces. A very nice variety and mix of distortion, delay, reverb and mods (such as chorus, flanger, phaser and tremolo) can be easily dialed in.
I'll keep it for home use, but…
For $ it is unfortunately very cheap plastic construction. I have other pedals in this price range that are solid metal housing and virtually indestructible in a live setting. I would be afraid to use this pedal in a live show for fear that I might demolish or at the very least crack the plastic housing by stepping on it too hard.
Line6: put this pedal in a metal housing and it would be an absolute winner and must have pedal for many.

Pleasantly Suprised

By Elman A. from Louisiana

I was not expecting the sounds to come out of such a small pedal. I own a Helix Floor that I purchased from Sweetwater a couple of years ago so I was prepared not to be overwhelmed. But I was intrigued by Don Carr's review of the POD Express. I wanted a small pedal just have something that I could easily plug in and play.
The features for editing are simple yet they go deeper than I expected. I decided to stick it my Boss BCB-90X, that I purchased here also, I had a FS-7 foot switch that I used to turn distortion and delay on/off. I built a few presets really quick and easy, saved and started jamming. Totally surprised by the sounds.
Easter Sunday, I used my little board in church instead of my Helix Floor and my sound guy was amazed at the sounds I got from the POD.
Well worth the money and if you're just getting started with pedals, this might be what you need.

Sucks!

By Sweetwater Customer from NV

I returned this after all the hype. It makes your guitar amp sound very tinny. The controls are either in or not. There is very little tweaking and the thing feels like a piece of junk.

Perfect Practice Rig!

By Ryan from Richmond, VA
Music Background: Recording Engineer and Weekend Warrior Guitarist

Had to get one of these on order from my rep Bill Sears as soon as I started seeing videos of this unit on YouTube. I play in a cover band and also do acoustic/electric solo gigs. I have a separate pedalboard for each setup, but was looking for something I could use at rehearsals with my band and by myself when I'm practicing during my lunch breaks as well as a backup in case one of my main boards went out on me during a gig. The POD Express is the perfect little box for those tasks. Battery powered, enough connectivity to allow me to switch major effect types on and off, headphone out, etc. The amp models and effects are great quality and just enough to not give me option paralysis. Only reason I'm dinging half a star is it would be nice to have an app to dial in some of the effects a little more, but honestly, for the cost of this box, I don't feel that I can really expect that. It's obviously geared towards someone who is new to effects modeling or someone like me that needs a great sounding backup rig for practicing and rehearsals. Great job Line 6!

A ton of fun for the dollar!

By Ernie S. from Las Cruces
Music Background: Professional

This little box is way too much fun. I can't think of another purchase that I'm digging more than this. It's just easy to plug in and rock out. Almost all the controls are easy to grab and get nice sounds and effects. That's why it's fun. You don't have to dig through menus to change settings. Yes, there are some deeper and even hidden settings/controls with combo button pushes and pushing knobs in. But, those aren't critical to basic sounds.

I have a large, nice home studio. The quality of sounds are very good. And the internal EFX are stereo which is great. It's pretty crazy how good they are in 2024. It's made of plastic and not metal, but feels very solid and the switches and knobs are solid. I have an AxeFX and these sounds aren't quite as good. So, it's not going to replace your expense AxeFx or Kemperer in a serious recording setup, but, its $! For me, I'm using the POD Express on my office desktop to jam with headphones. It's like the new Rockman! Perfect and easy to use. Runs on both Batteries or a wall-wart.

I always have to give kudos to my incredible Sweetwater Sales Engineer - Bob Monok. He is always right there for help, service and choices on great gear. Bob Rocks!

Bottom line... I can't think of another under $200 pedal/box that mades me smile more. Buy one, you'll love it.

Incredible value, easy to use, but requires a slight shift in mindset

By Jeremy H. from Tampa, FL
Music Background: Hobbyist

My short review of this product is that the tones are great and it's very simple to get a "finished" sound. For a bedroom or amateur guitarist, this is a great choice if your focus is on playing (rather than endlessly searching to match a specific tone).

To go into a little more detail, I'm a bedroom guitarist who just plays for fun. I've used a number of amateur-level modeling equipment in the past including a Spark 40 Amp, Boss Katana Head Mk2, Fender Mustang GTX 100, Boss Katana Artist Mk2, Line 6 Pod Go, and Tonex on iOS/MacOS. When I use a modeler, I want it to be able to do four things well:

(1) Let me dial in a variety of basic tones that sound "good"
(2) Let me change certain settings via footswitch so that I can have different tones during a song
(3) Let me make slight tweaks without too much difficulty
(4) Let me operate it with a looper / headphones.

This pedal does all of these things exceptionally well, while also being the smallest and simplest unit to operate. The only thing this pedal does not do is amplify the sound, which can be resolved with any basic speaker or PA system. The basic amps all sound good, and it's easy enough to dial in the right degree of gain. I love the simplicity with which you shift between the types and amounts of reverbs and delays (including the tap delay feature) and that it has a built-in tuner. The fact that you can expand this with a footswitch makes it even more useful. This pedal really does just about 90% of what an amateur like myself could ask for from an entire pedal board.

The downsides I've experienced thus far are:
* The knobs can be a little sensitive... for example, if you accidentally brush the Mod knob or the Dist knob from its "off" setting, you quickly engage the Boost or Chorus which can dramatically alter the tone.
* The looper is somewhat limited. You cannot use delay, the reverb setting is "global," and you cannot use presets. With that said, it operates like a normal single-button looper.

In contrast, the other modeling equipment I used each has its own downsides that I feel made it less of a fit for my needs, or costs more. For example:
* Tonex offers far more options with guitar tones and is a great quality sound, but it requires using an interface with a phone or computer--the Tonex pedal resolves that issue, but it costs double the POD Express and lacks even a basic delay.
* The Pod Go can do everything this little guy can and a lot more, but it's more than double the price and less portable.
* The Boss Katanas can get amazing tones, but I found that it was a challenge for me to dial in the settings the way I liked them. Some people can use the Boss Tone Studio and get unbelievable results, but it required using my computer or the AirStep pedal w/ my phone, and I still struggled when trying to do this on my own (and not download patches).
* The Spark and the Fender Mustang GTX did not have, in my opinion, the same sound quality of the amp models as the Pod Express does.

In sum I'm really happy with this pedal and it seems to resolve my biggest concerns I've had thus far with modeling equipment. Again, it doesn't come with a way to actually amplify the sound via a speaker, but between my various equipment around the house or the ability to use PA equipment, I feel like this presents a totally versatile option for someone who just wants to focus on playing guitar with a "finished" sound that comes from modeling the basics: a good amplified/cabinet, boost, mods, delay, and reverb. I think it's a great value and I'm happy Line 6 saw this gap in the market!

Wonderful!

By Carvey W. from West Chester, Ohio
Music Background: Praise & Worship and bedroom axe shredder

If you are like me and have an HX stomp, but struggle with the option overload, this a great solution. I've had it less than a week and have dialed in great tones with a little bit of time invested. Being able to save your sounds via presets is amazing. I planned to buy an IR-2 to finalize a practice/fly/backup rig, but this was released. It has surpassed my expectations.

If you familiar with line 6 or helix effects, you will right at home. The drives sound great, delays and modulation are top notch, reverbs are useable but I added a reverb pedal to get the big ambient sounds because they are lacking in that dept. Hopefully, a future update will give us better reverb options. Amp sims can be easily dialed in a a little bit of time to sounds great and takes external pedals very well.

I think the ONLY thing I would change about this product (besides a metal enclosure) is an effects loop so I could hear the pedals in the chain (like reverb) via the head phone out. Speaking of the head phone out, it sounds almost identical to the main outs (which I did not experience with the HX stomp).

This is a great product, well designed, sounds great, fun and easy to use. I great investment for only $. It's a no brainer for anyone wanting to creat a practice rig or want to try out the line 6 effects and amps. Sure to be a modern classic.

Worth It.

By Gunner

Does it have every feature known to man? No. Does it allow you to tweak every small detail of each effect? No. But does it provide an accessible unit that gets you great tones at an incredibly affordable price? Absolutely. I genuinely don't understand the harsh criticism I've seen regarding this pedal recently. It's not built like a tank, but cost cutting has to be found somewhere with a price like this. In my humble opinion, it's worth every penny.

Pitter Patter goes my heart.

Does Playing LINE 6 POD make anyone else really happy?
LINE 6 POD is quickly becoming my favorite pedal. It's just so beautiful. Practically free and the second you drop her on the board that chill gives you a Rich Dark Gushing Robust tone.. And you also get this cute little 1/1 feedback response usually too harmless to be forgotten.
But more than that, the Line 6 Pod is just so positively alluring. It comes on the board like "do you want to cast a spell?" and I'm like "yeah Line 6 Pod i do want to cast a spell let's do this " and when she attacks she's like "SPELLS ARE FUN" and I'm like "yeah they are SO FUN." She doesn't say some like "I will destroy you" she's just like "nah spells are fun and voodoo spooky." And she looks so happy. I mean this is an inanimate object that literally brought my guitar to life by magic. It understands it's life is a temporary magical gift and the dude is just loving it. I mean just look at her face she's just so happy and cute as a button.
I am literally never sad when Line 6 Pod is on board. IDK if she's gonna ever make it into the pedal HOF or not, but for now she a super dope chill pedal.

Not so much...

By Dave C. from Wauseon, OH
Music Background: 40 years leading Christ's church in worship! :)

"Based on Helix models" is not the same as Helix models. It's hard enough to make the Helix sound pretty/musical. It's WAY too hard...maybe impossible...to make this thing sound pretty/musical. I sent mine back after fighting with it for a while through my Focal monitors. BTW I LOVE my Helix Floorboard. Thanks Sweetwater for making the return a pleasant experience!

Unrivaled for the money

By Thomas S. from Eastford, CT

Pros:

Huge variety of tones. The selection of amps they chose for this pedal really covers all of the bases, especially when paired with the variety of distortion effects and optional speaker cabs.

Great effects. From modulation to delay and reverb, everything in this little box sounds great. It's definitely more meat and potato type effects, like you're not gonna get too far out there, but that's not the point with this.

Nice I/O. They are very generous with the I/O for the money. The headphone output is great for late night jamming. The main stereo outs have a nice big spread. USB is great for direct recording to either your phone or DAW and also allows you to jam along with tracks if that's your thing. The footswitch input is a great courtesy jack for giving you on/off control of two of the effects.

Thoughtful user interface. While you can't get crazy in depth with control of each effect, it really just isn't necessary for what this pedal is. It's really just more about finding a great "standard" sound and going with it. With that in mind, the one knob control of the effects combined with the alt button for deep editing the amp settings works really well for the most part (one complaint later below). I've found that I don't spend a lot of time "fiddling" when playing with Pod Express, because getting a great sound is very easy.

Great tuner. While it may not be something that you buy the pedal for, I gotta say the tuner is great. It's very accurate and easy to use without being super jumpy.

Battery powered! The main reason I bought this pedal is that it can run off 3 AA batteries. It's a great feature when combined with a battery powered FRFR amp for things like busking or just jamming outside (or anywhere lacking electricity).

Cons:

Cheap build quality. This pedal definitely feels like a plastic pedal. I'm not saying that I wouldn't gig with it, but if I do, I'm gonna be very careful with it because it doesn't strike me as the most durable thing in the world. For what it's worth, at the price point it's at I wouldn't expect anything more.

Annoying design flaw. While overall the design on this pedal is fantastic, there is a pretty big fail… the outer four knobs do not rotate all the way around like the center knob does. So basically you get to "10" and they stop turning. This wouldn't be a problem accept that with the "alt" button, each knob is controlling two sets of parameters, so if you change one, change the other, and then go back to the first again, your original setting is lost. Super annoying and it could have been easily addressed by having the four outer knobs function like the center knob where it can rotate infinitely.

Overall verdict:

This pedal is fantastic and excels at so many different use cases. They market it as a pedal for beginners, but if you're looking for a "grab and go" solution, it's really good regardless of your experience level. It's definitely not made for pro touring or anything like that due to the plastic construction, but for what it's worth, it could get the job done if you were careful enough with it. I wish I could give it a 5, but the design flaw with the knobs would have been so easy to fix and really should have been caught by someone prior to release.

Never liked anything like this but…….

By Tyler R. from PELHAM, AL

What separates this from so many is the the alt button and being able to add bass and treble to the effects. I have not even been all the way though it yet, but it's so easy to dial in a really great usable sound , even for a guy like me, who is lost on a hx stomp. I usually have a small board of at least 6 pedals but I could get through a gig with just this and an amp or if the PA was solid enough just this !!! Pretty kick a dude

An Instant Classic!

By Aaron S. from USA

I purchased one of these IMMEDIATELY!

I have a Cole Clark hybrid acoustic guitar with a magnetic humbucker in the bridge and I have been using a Boss IR-2 as an amp sim but wanted something very light that also had effects. This is exactly that!

When I received it I tested it with my SSH Strat style guitar and loved it.

It's simple and sounds great and for some it will be all they need!
