Charvel Pro-Mod DK24 HH 2PT Electric Guitar - Chlorine Burst Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Alder Body, Caramelized Maple Neck, Caramelized Maple Fingerboard, 2 Humbucking Pickups, and Gotoh Tremolo - Chlorine Burst

Two guitar icons come together in the Charvel Pro-Mod DK24. Its alder Jackson Dinky body is light in the hands and contoured against the body, while a graphite-reinforced Charvel Speed Neck remains rock solid as it ages. Charvel's familiar 12"–16" compound-radius fingerboard flattens out nicely in the upper registers, giving technical players the speed and expression they need for bends, runs, and vibrato.

Moderately priced with boutique quality

By Smitty from Nashville TN on April 17, 2024

I own about 20 guitars, including some high end Gibsons and a PRS Silver Sky. For some reason I have always wanted to add a Charvel to the collection, and a buddy of mine strongly recommended the DK24. Except his was the version with the floyd rose, and I have a love hate relationship with those. Then I saw this DK24 with the Gotoh, and carmelized maple neck. All the specs hit every checkbox I wanted except for stainless steel frets. I could not find any in stock to try out, so I took my chances. All I can say is....wow. I can't find any flaws, and the neck is super confortable. Parts that are ergonically challeging on other guitars are a breeze with this neck profile. Easy to get low action and the string tension is perfect. The pickups are great, and the bridge pickup has great clarity and attack (it loves Marshall voiced amps). The mini toggle actually has some useable tones. This guitar exceeded my expectations and I think is priced well considering all the specs are premium parts that you find in more expensive guitars.

Great and beutiful guitar!!!

By BRUNO FRANCO from COTIA, Sao Paulo on March 29, 2024

It must be the twenty-fifth guitar I've acquired over the years. This Charvel is fantastic, worth every penny spent on it. The neck is fast and at the same time comfortable.Fine finishing like guitars made in the USA. Seymour Duncan pickups have great tone and versatility.
In my humble opinion, only the stainless steel frets were missing.

What a SCREAMER & Plays like BUTTER

By Dan From Bham from Mountain Brook, AL on August 7, 2023

I've been mainly playing a vintage Les Paul, Gibson 335 and a couple of high end luthier made guitars but was looking for a more moderate priced metal/high gain type guitar. I purchased another brand in a similar price range but after 2 days I just couldn't bond with it. Upon my sales engineers (Adam Cesarz) advice I returned the other guitar and got the Charvel. Three words, WOW WOW WOW! What a surprise this was when I played the first chord and noodled up the neck. I've never owned a guitar with a carmalized neck and was stunned how playable it was. Even in the highest registers at 20+ frets is was smooth as silk. The pickups are screamers and you can hit harmonics anywhere on the neck. It didn't matter what I was playing it through, either my Marshall, REVV, Friedman or Helix it's IN YOUR FACE blowing your hair back. This Charvel hits WAY ABOVE ITS PRICE POINT and I'm thrilled it was recommended. I'll be playing it this weekend and leaving my Les Paul at home.

Vow! What a guitar

By EB from Ventura, Ca on December 16, 2022

I just received my first Charvel ever. First of all Michael Grebe is my musical spirit guide. He is always spot on with what I like and need. Thank you so much for always taking the time to make sure I am happy. You are the best.
I have 2 Fenders: one American and one Mexican. I wanted a Super Strat that gives me a bit more tonal option. Boy the Charvel does not disappoint. From the roasted maple neck to the awesome color (which the pictures do not do it justice) to the pick ups to the craftsmanship. It is a very well made guitar on the same level as my American Fender even though it was crafted in Mexico. I couldn't be more happy. I had to do some minor set up which is expected. As others mentioned it plays smooth as butter. Right now it is my favorite guitar. Something strange I noticed though with the humbuckers. They sound a bit more Straty than a fat humbucker which I actually love since I am a Fender kind of guy. This guitar can handle anything from clean to funk to pop to progressive to metal and everything in between. It is a very versatile guitar. Did I mention that I am sooooo happy with it? As I said earlier the pick ups are awesome. Lots of clarity, detail, harmonics etc. You can get 10 different sounds with the 5 way switch and the small switch that switches the humbuckers from parallel to series. Brilliant.
I highly recommend this guitar if you are looking for a Super Strat. The price is amazing for what you get. It feels like a $2000 plus guitar.

Incredible guitar

By BA from Ventura, CA on May 20, 2022 Music Background: 30+ years; local rock cover band.

Saw it several months ago, was not available. I signed up for notification and purchased as soon as they came back in stock. I've been beating it up for 2 days now, can't put it down. I own a lot of guitars and this is by far one of the best I've ever owned. Neck is amazing. Lots of versatility of sound with the 5 way and the series/parallel. A complete rock monster. This is getting immediately rotated in my band lineup. You'd be hard pressed to get a better axe at this price point.

Finally Found It!!

By Michael from ALLEN, TX on July 11, 2020

I've been a Strat guy for 20 years(Lone Star Strat and an American Pro) and didn't know what I was missing until I played this guitar. I've put my hands on a lot of guitars over the years, but I'm not sure I've ever played one that felt this good right away. "Super Strat" is an understatement. The neck is a game changer! It's unbelievable fast! The caramelized maple sound is almost between a traditional maple and a rosewood neck and it looks and feels great. Like butter! Honestly, with all the features that this guitar has it feels like a steal at this price now that I have played it. You really don't want to put this guitar down. While the "55 point inspection" from Sweetwater is not a guitar setup, this baby came packaged very well and played great right out of the box...had to tune 1 string(g of course). This is my first guitar from Sweetwater, but it won't be my last! Well...maybe, since the guitar can do it all!

Charvel Butter

I'm really getting into the Pro Mod DK24 and learning how much I appreciate the quality in this for such a modestly-priced guitar. Smooth playing, rewarded with terrific sound through a Boss amp.

Smells great

By Evan from Dayton, Ohio on January 17, 2020

This guitar is so much more than I expected! The body carves on it make it so comfortable, and the neck is so fast! The trem is so responsive and the pickup system gives you such a variety of tones. The roasted maple neck is smooth and it smells SO GOOD. Love this guitar and the color.

A Jack of all trades and a master at many!! A pinnicle for modern guitar!

By Homenguscleo from Mount Olympus on November 15, 2019 Music Background: Playing histories greatest instrument 25 years and have taught over a decade

Ok wow!! This is an impressive axe man. Seems to be the greatest gigging axe ever made. Haha.. I own mij, usa and mim pro mods and am pretty well versed when it comes to the charvel kingdom.. All awesome in their own way. I also own the guthrie govan newer one with satin finish and neck and bridge split switch, and the new dk24 shell pink , which is an amazing axe. Comparing to the dk24 hss , although the neck on the shell pink is done very well , this one is immaculately finished and really super smooth and just a joy to look at and one of the nicest in its own way. The body cuts are done perfectly and the belly cut and screws are perfectly in there with no loose ends and fitted nice and snug.. Super comfy to shred on the upper registers and just a superb body balance , better than all my dk24s balance wise.. I own the incredible purple phaze hardtail as well.. Guthrie is super flamed but also a 3k axe and this flaming and figuring is right up there in its own unique way.. I was first in line on the chlorine burst and it paid off. Sweetwater musta gave me the nicest one :-) My neck has this cascading flaming pattern and the figuring on the body is one of the nicest i have ever seen. Def too 3 chlorines ever if not 1 lol.. I'm bias...Just a glorious gorgeous axe!! There are 10 wonderful usable positions to choose from, and this tone seems to have this slight twangy vai aspect to my ears. Really cool! I especially love these unique charvel wiring options like all 4 single coils engaged and the two outer coils engaged in position 4 i believe parallel mode. Also did i mention how silent each position is... So i actually connect with this guitar way more more than the guthrie i own and will probably end up selling it. This ismore a shredders charvel and completely different than the guthrie govan and by no means a budget guthrie.. That one was made for the man and is basswood a bit darker kinda has this neutral eq and jinest pickups good for practice haha super clean imho more geared for chicken picking ,fusion , jazz and it could play anything and shred 7 positions, but shall insay this isneven more versatile with 10 positions and way more shreddy like shredder haha. Just i connect with the tones more since i play robin trower, whitesnake, rory gallagher and a lot of 60s/70/80s/90s blues and metal.. Guthrie could donit but not as good as this to my ears ..This has that strat spank as well and the quack could do stevie ray or whatever .It could also sparkle super clean and do jazz and chicken picking country , and this model seems to have all the same appointments of the 3k priced usa select model besides a flamed neck and titanium reinforxed saddles I believe.. It is truly an inspiring axe which could do it all . A jack of all trades abd a master of many if you will. The caremelized maple neck ( i heard it is a bit different to a baked neck but not sure) imparts a different tone. Adds a bit of a bite since notes are absorbed differently through the wood. Seems to add an aggressiveness and tone like rosewood with the feel of maple which is really cool. Charvel seems to capture the middle ground between the shredders and the traditional strat players and even lester players. These guitars aren't that super bam in your face intimidating , or shaped a bit too aggressively and non comfy, and look really awesome on stage and are a lot easier to fix if something goes wrong. You want one if you are a gigging musician on tour or just a road junkie, this is the axe for you.. Could cover all genres , Have these classic styles thst many strat and les paul players like myself seem to connect with and love. I have been playing 25 years and have taught over w decade.. my first guitsr was an ibanez rg270 and thought nonmore floyds haha.. Was ales paul player for years after started out on strats , these charvel necks are similar since gibsons usually are 12 inch radius. I used to never play floyds now i own too many cause these charvies are that good. Charvels are taking over the world and they have the greatest necks known to man. You will never find a better feel or comfort imho.. No tuning issues whatsoever--simply perfect!!

Imho this destroys anything out there and not even adding the for the price moniker. This is no az and is a must for the serious musician , these have better feel and top comfort imho .. The az has a weird neck profile and not these pickups or woods thst sing , as well as the belly cut and wiring positions. This eats 3k usa custom shops for breakfast , prestiges , current indonesian made jacksons lol, wolfgang, esp, ebmm , and any shred stick or even strat u put it up against cuz the neck is thst incredible .Incredible axe period!! I double dog dare you to battle me haha .Thanks and special shoutout to my rep chris kress who hooked it up !!

Update to my previous review regarding sustain...

By James on November 6, 2019

Took the guitar to local luthier; he recognized that the tone switch for some reason was not engaged. Got it adjusted in about a minute. That combined with the toggle switch and the guitar screams now with plenty of sustain. Very happy And this is now a 5-star review.

Sweet guitar!

By Justin Brown from Dallas, GA on November 15, 2021 Music Background: Playing for 23 years and a luthier for 8 years

It's a solid guitar! The neck is ridiculously smooth and for those questioning if it's real roasted maple or not I can confirm it definitely is after doing a few modifications. Beware if you intend to swap out the nut it has a radiuses bottom instead of flat so order a nut accordingly. Also be extremely careful removing the old nut or you'll chip the fingerboard on the headstock side. I got a brass block for the bridge but there honestly isn't much of a difference from the beefy block it comes with. Other than that I'd recommend you get it PLEKed if you like the action low because I'm having problems in that aspect. Also a side note at this price point for the overall quality of the guitar it should definitely come with a hard case. The guitar is great but at this price point I am a good bit disappointed.

great playability but sustain is weak

By Sweetwater Customer on November 2, 2019

Love the playability of this guitar. And both pickups are full-sounding and crisp. Only complaint is the sustain.... just isn't there on any of the pickup settings. I'm keeping the guitar but I'm going to have to make a modification at one point to get the sustain figured out. It's not my rig - I have a HELIX LT setup with high end monitors. No issues with my other guitars including MIM fenders, cheapie epiphones, etc.

If it weren't for the sustain this would be a 5-star review. The playability is just so good on this neck. The caramel maple neck looks beautiful. Guitar balance is good. The sound quality from the pickups is great. It's such a joy to play. But dammit I want to hold some of those notes and bends a little longer.

Disappointing quality control

By Nick from Warwick, RI on September 1, 2023 Music Background: Advanced

I had heard good things about Charvel and these made in Mexico models. The reviews all seemed to be positive as well. Overall this is a great guitar. From the outside everything feels and plays great; the neck profile is comfortable, the frets are smooth, the weight is balanced and it does look great. However, when I plugged it in, I noticed I was hearing a decent amount of hum, more so than my HSS guitar (Pacifica), which I was surprised since this has dual humbuckers. It went away when I touched the strings or bridge, so seemed like a ground issue. After I opened up the control cavity, I found my answer. Even though they do use shielding paint inside, it was applied very sloppily. There were lots of spots that didn't even have any coverage. Needless to say there was no conductivity when measuring with the multimeter. I removed the wiring, redid the shielding, and put it back together and it made a world of difference; no more humming. I get that this isn't USA-made, but I had expected better quality control for a guitar in this price range. If I had known I would need to put in this extra work (plus parts) I likely wouldn't have picked a Charvel, but I'd imagine this kind of things could be hit or miss, so not everyone will have the same experience, but I hope the quality control improves in the future.
