PMC PMC8 SUB Active Studio Subwoofer Reviews

Active Studio Subwoofer with 300W 200mm Woofer and Advanced Transmission Line Cabinet (each)

The PMC 8 SUB is a versatile studio subwoofer that can be used in one of two ways. It can be deployed conventionally with any monitor speakers to extend the low frequencies in a stereo setup or to reproduce an LFE channel in a surround configuration. Combined with PMC near or midfield monitors, it can be used to form an XBD system. As an XBD expansion, the PMC 8 SUB’s audio input runs through the same filters as the main monitor’s woofer, duplicating LF content and enabling the system to reach a higher maximum SPL. Any way you use it, the PMC 8 SUB improves your monitoring system performance to help you make better-sounding recordings.

Great Sound, Weird Routing

By C J. from Tulsa, OK

I do love the sound of this sub, it is a perfect addition to the PMC6 pair, and I love PMC's control system. HOWEVER, the ways to run it Mono are a little confusing and limited. If you're like me, buying almost 10k of stereo subs ain't worth it if you can make one work. Here is how I had to do it.

This sub does not have stereo ins. If you jump off of one PMC6 digital out, you're only going to have low end info from that channel which is not ideal for several reasons. You will have to find a way to either duplicate your main signal, which did not work for me when using Y splitters on my main outputs. These speakers did not seem to like the feedback that comes from signal splitting. (Weird, immediate phase issues between the main two monitors when all were connected.) instead, I had to run out of my 3&4 channels, sum them to mono, and mirror their volume control to my main outs.

There are several ways to integrate this sub as mono, especially if you're using something like the Dangerous Audio station which has a sub out, but the sub itself is not ideal for it based on its mono-only input. PMC designed it to work as a stack with/per-PMC 6, using their crossover technology, but it just works better for me and my wallet to run it mono. And it now finally works, after much experimentation. If you intend to run it mono, I recommend doing it via mirroring channels of your interface vs. trying to analog-cable split.
