So many stage options

By Ronald P. from FINLEYVILLE, PA

This pedal would have made me more than happy if it only had the infinite rise or fall modes available but it didn't stop there. You get a 4, 8, 10 and 12 stage phaser and a neat step effect when you buy this pedal! This thing is versatile!
In my setup I have this pedal placed before my drives and out of my FX loop, to me it just "works" better there. I'd recommend this pedal to anyone looking for a multi-stage phaser pedal!

Not what they are arketing

By Camptain J. from Starship Enterprise

I bought this pedal because people told me that THIS would be a good phaser but in reallity it does nothing! It is even beyond stun when you put rate to the maximun - it just turns on the light that would not hurt a mosquito! And it seems to be stuck the light is always on but you need to press it again to stop it

A Desert Island Phaser Pedal

By Jared from Mississippi
Music Background: Professional Musician/Touring Artist

Since I got my PH-3 I've been in hog heaven. I've read complaints on this pedal and I realized that people just complain too much. Everything from forum posts in the early 2000s saying it was "total Boss trash", to, "it's digital so it's junk". And of course the volume drop complaint. There is an issue with this of course, but when you're using it for recording it's a non-issue. A mod to quell this would be nice, but it's not a deal breaker.

This really is a very good "jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none". However I'm here to calm your fears...

My background - I'm a phaser fanatic. I've been using the same USA large box Small Stone for 20 years and swear by it. Before that, I owned the Russian Stone (black box, red letter), when it was the "poor man's NYC". Also in my cabinet : A Script Phase 90, a block Phase 90, a Phase 100, and the Nano Stone. So that's all the classics. My mission was to find a pedal that would do all of it convincingly so I could unload some of my pedals in this crazy pedal market.

The PH-3 will get you 90-95% there. On all of them. Yes, all of them. (That includes Boss' own 80's foray - the PH-2 and PH-1R - I'm telling you it does everything). That extra 5-10% depends on how hardcore you are (or fussy) about your phase tones. Things like...getting the sweep to cascade exactly like my SS big box. Not gonna happen. Even the Nano Stone doesn't do it the same, and the PH-3 actually gets closer. The Res knob is the color for your Small Stone on setting 1. Dial it down to 9:00-11:00 for color off, and anywhere from 12:00 to full for "color on". Turn the Depth and Res down fully for a Phase 90 tone. Then flip it to 8 stage for Phase 100. It's stupid easy. Most people will be completely satisfied if they TAKE THE TIME to dial the tones in. Selecting the Step setting and cranking the Rate and being upset that it's not EVH is not logical.

I paired my precious collection against the PH-3 for 4 hours last night. It gets scary close and I could honestly say it'd be my only phaser pedal if I had to choose one for the rest of time.

People can keep hating on this pedal all they want : "volume drop, digital, BOSS, blah blah" but I'm probably going to buy a backup PH-3. I'm getting rid of all of my other phasers except the 100 and the big boy SS. The campy analog goodness of both of my 1980s pedals are that extra 10% I can't live without - but I absolutely could if I needed to. The most useful swiss army knife phaser pedal you could ever hope to own.

Boss PH-3 - the pedal of the year for me.

Found it!

I've tried several phasers and this is the one for me! It does what all the others do, from subtle to way too much, plus tap tempo and that cool arpegiator thing! Sold.

Digital sounding

By Res S.
Music Background: Experienced, ex pro guitarist.

Not as nice as the MXR Phase 90 if you want the EVH tone. It's otherwise okay for getting some far out space age effects.

Too pronounced and vocal like very digital sounding, not my cup of tea, quickly sold it on.

MXR Script Phase 90 is the classic phase tone that I want.

I should have got the MXR to begin with. I love Boss pedals, just not this one. I have around 7 or 8 Boss pedals and they are all excellent and built for gigs it has its own sound and does not emulate the Phase 90. I thought it would be better value than a Phase 90 having so many knobs and options to play with, but I tweaked it for a while but could not get the tone I wanted. I got it close but it sounded quite overpowering and it did not feed well into the front of my dirty Marshall like my old Phase 90 did.

Make sure you test it out to make sure this is the sound you want and can live with, if it's a classic EVH sound, just get the Phase 90 .

Great sounding phase pedal..but there is a trick

By Daniel J. from TX
Music Background: Studio Musician / Composer /Engineer

I love the PH-3 pedal and find it to be unique with the rise and fall modulation modes...my favorite is the fall mode. The tone is great and you can create almost any phase sound you could want. But here is the real trick to making it cut through the mix...use an EQ pedal after the phase shifter in the signal chain that shapes the tone to cut the lows a bit, and boost the highs a bit as well...amazing what a difference this makes and will make you want to use the pedal much more...you can tweak the phase shift to your particular amp tone. Then add some reverb and it is ambient heaven.

Nice Sounding Phaser

By Brad from New York
Music Background: Home studio recording

I got this as a gift a while ago and I decided it's time to do a review. Being that the PH-3 is my first ever Phase Shifter,
I wasn't familiar with the settings. The owners manual displayed several sample settings which was very helpful. They all sounded great. I am using this with a keyboard synthesizer and I love that it filters out the high frequencies. It sweetens the sound. The quality of the Boss pedals are rock solid. The Green color is also really cool!

mixed feelings

By Sweetwater Customer

Pros: extremely versatile, great sounds and a few really weird ones. RES control makes for some very deep phasing, even in 4 stage mode.

Con: (and this was a deal breaker for me) volume drop when engaged. I get why this happens with phasing cancelling frequencies, but Boss should have compensated for this. I could put a pedal in front or behind this like Boss GE-7 to boost it back up, but you shouldn't have to rethink your approach to something as simple as a phaser pedal.

Boss

By Sweetwater Customer

I love boss pedals, I really do and this pedal is one of the reasons why. Awesome, classic phase sounds. Having tap tempo is a great feature as well. The different stages make it versatile, and the solid construction means you can take it everywhere. This pedal is worth checking out if you're in the market for a phaser.

Another Boss Success

By Chris from Atlanta
Music Background: Songwriter guitarist, producer engineer

I recently purchased the PH-3 to replace my 1970's vintage SmallStone phase shifter--which finally phaded away after almost 40 years of use. I was a little concerned that I wouldn't be able to produce the organic sound of the older EH unit, but I have replaced almost all of my effects with the Boss units in this series (including overdrive/distortion, compressor sustainer and delay) so I decided to keep it in the family. What a great decision! I can absolutely reproduce the effect of the vintage SmallStone, and with the additional stage settings I can do so much more. OK, some of the effects are so over the top I probably wouldn't ever use them, but, hey, they are great to experiment with. Quiet in operation, no switching noise, intuitive to use, and solidly built. This will in all likelihood the last phase shifter I will ever buy, if it turns out to be as reliable as my old SmallStone. Highly recommended.

Really Nice

By Joey from Coral Springs, FL
Music Background: Hobbyist, Live Player

This pedal is great... if you know how to use it. This pedal took me a while to figure out. The regular phasing sounds are pretty good but what really sells this pedal is the fall, rise, and step modes. With the fall mode your sound continually drops which I love in certain songs. The rise mode is the opposite, it makes your sound continually rise, and the step mode is more for techno but it is sure fun to play around with. Overall I love this pedal but it is way over priced. I bought this from a friend but if you can find it used for cheaper (which you can) it is a good buy. The reason this pedal did not get 5 stars is because of the ease of use issue and the price.
