A Masterpeice Instrument

By Chris from United States on July 5, 2017 Music Background: Hobbyist

This review is for the matte Blue Frost 2017 Jackson PC1. I have bought some great guitars from Sweetwater from an Ibanez JS to a Music Man JPX. From the moment you open the case, you can tell this guitar is in a different league. The finish is amazing and pictures do not do it justice. It is a slight pearl finish, and I would say it is slightly darker than a robin's egg. It is caramelized mahogany both the body under the finish and the neck. It is a heavier guitar but I like that in an ax.
The neck is thicker than most Jackson's and it reminds me of a deep "C" Fender strat neck. I tend to like thicker necks as does Phil Collen. The neck is a beautiful dark flamed maple neck. The picture of this guitar on Jackson's own site, does not show off the baked neck of flame detail. Most of the guitars I saw online do show off that neck's flame detail as does Sweetwater's picture. There are no fret board markers except for the sides, which makes sense so you can enjoy the flamed figuring without taking away from it. One thing to note that Jackson does not even mention on their site, is that the side fret board markers glow in the dark; great for lowlight stage situations.
The bridge pickup is a DiMarzio DP 152. This Super Distortion pickup is my all time favorite pickup, and although it is a benchmark for metal players, it can handle any genre of music. I play everything from 80's rock and metal, some 70's of the same genre and a little modern metal. One thing I want to stress about this guitar though, it is far from a one trick pony. The middle pickup is a DiMarzio HS2, and the neck pickup is a sustainer. This is a cool feature. There are two switches for the sustainer. The lower switch is the on/off switch. It is cool to leave it on during a solo. Then when you hold a single note during the solo, it imitates feedback through the amp. The upper switch is blending switch for the sustainer. I have read that the sustainer does drain the 9 volt batteries. Yes it does take two of them, but I do not use it like crazy, so I should not have to replace them much. There are three knobs on the guitar, and the rear knob is a intensity knob for the sustainer. The other two are your obvious volume and tone knobs.
The tremolo on this guitar is an original Floyd Rose, and it stays in tune perfectly. What can I say, it is a real Floyd.
The case is a hard shell Jackson branded case with TSA locks. The only comment I would say, is if it was up to me, I would ship this guitar in an Elite case like the Fender Elite Stratocasters get but Jackson branded. They are the nicest cases in my opinion, but this is a fine case too. I like the case compartments to have their own lids, which this case does not. Nevertheless, it is a very good case.
As usual, awesome customer service from my guitar sales engineer Dave Walent, who got this out to me, and gives you top notch service. I can't say enough good things about him.
From the moment you lay eyes on this guitar and play it, you can tell this guitar is in a different league from the craftsmanship and playability. Some colors really shine and this matte Blue Frost is no exception. It may be a one and done year finish, and I only know of one other Jackson model that comes in this color. I would not wait, because I have a feeling as the years go by, this finish is going to be sought after. Whether you are a Phil Collen and or a Def Leppard fan or not, this guitar is incredible, and I am so glad I got this particular model. As I titled this review; a masterpiece instrument.
