Squier Mini Precision Electric Bass - Black Reviews

4-string Electric Bass with Poplar Body, Maple Neck, Laurel Fingerboard, and Split Single-coil Pickup - Black

Scaled-down for younger players, the Squier Mini Precision Bass delivers the stellar P Bass look and sound in a compact, poplar body and shorter than short-scale maple neck. And, like its big brother, the Mini Precision Bass pumps out the familiar P Bass tone through its split single-coil pickup. It’s been said that bass players aren’t born, they’re made. Just kidding, no one’s ever said that. But, if your kiddo is a little groove monster in the making, you can’t go wrong sticking a Squier Mini Precision Bass in their hands. For parents at Sweetwater, the Squier Mini guitars and basses, including the Mini Precision Bass, are a go-to-choice when selecting an instrument for their aspiring musicians. Start them out right with a great instrument made just for them!

A mini beast

By Louis Segovia from KEENE, NH on August 3, 2023

Bought this bass guitar for studio recording, great bass sounds and really enjoyed playing it. Thanks to Nick Blough for the excellent service.

My new main Bass

By Candido Gonzalez from New York, NY on June 6, 2023 Music Background: Cover Band

I was a little skeptical of the ratings given the size and price but this thing sounds like a P bass. I paid extra for the SW setup and that comes with new strings and now it plays like a $ bass. I've seen lots of mods for this bass but its sounds great stock. I plan to gig with it this summer. As for the size, its really about preference, if you have small hands or if you're a guitarist that wants a fast neck this is a good option.

How about Six Stars!

By G Steven Oliver from NORMAN, OK on February 10, 2023 Music Background: Bass player

This fine instrument absolutely KILLS it!
It arrived today, intact and ready to rock. Quickly turned her up and I jammed for two straight hours! I love this Gender and I know you will too! How about Six Stars?!

Thank you Sweetwater Sweethearts, excellent service.

Comfortable

By Sweetwater Customer from NH on February 7, 2023

I bought this just for the fun of learning to play and chose it because it's small and I am too. It's a very comfortable instrument to hold and play for an extended period of time.

Shocking

By jc on January 19, 2023

This little bass is unbelievably good sounding. I originally bought it on a lark for a gig with a super tight stage as a semi joke...but this little guys sounds really really good. If you spend some time setting it up properly its a fantastic little bass!

Fantastic value!

By Gary Dotson from Riverview, MI on October 4, 2022

Just like any new guitar/bass, you will probably need a setup. This bass certainly did. After adjusting the string height, neck relief, intonation, polishing the frets, oiling fret board, this thing is a fantastic player. Sounds great.

Squire PBass Mini

By Christ from Pennsylvania on July 8, 2022

Fender mini-Squire Bass

By Randall Thomasson from WA on February 26, 2022 Music Background: Amateur Musician

I had heard great reviews about the guitar and it was in my price range. I am not a pro bass player, but am really enjoying playing and picking up tips on You Tube. I also bought a Behringer BXL1800 amp that gives the guitar that great bass sound and I barely have to turn it up. For the price I think it's a beautiful guitar for the budget minded. Go for it. :-)

Terrific Talk Bass Support

By Frank Vozak from Oak Park, IL on January 25, 2022 Music Background: Two musical careers with bass--16 to 25 and then 67 untilo now

Talk Bass is on of the best internet sights for bass players and even before the Mini P was available in the US a few were available overseas and a Mini P thread was started. The Mini P thread will teach you about everything you want to know about this bass plus you can ask any question you might have and will be assured of excellent support, ideas, comments and on occasion laughs. Adult experienced bass players have made this bass a popular cult bass. I don't have alot of internet experience with bass chatter but Talk Bass and several other sites have made this bass an incredibly driven musician directed instrument.

Can't go wrong with FMI

By Sean Starr from California on December 8, 2021 Music Background: 40+ years guitar and bass.

Can't add much that the other reviews haven't covered.
As a guitarist first, the Mini-P is comfortable and fast. I LOVE IT!
I've found a nice sound on my Yamaha THX30ii, and I'm using her for demos. I prefer semi-round bass strings, but have yet to change them out.

Honestly, out of the box the fret ends were pretty brutal. I do home luthiery (kits and remodels), so that was a nothing burger for me - since I love working on a guitar as much as playing it. So after a relatively quick set up I was off...
... And once you get started the Mini P is hard to put down!

Don't be put off by my "out of the box" experience. An initial set up is common particularly with an inexpensive instrument. Squire's are high quality, and VERY playable. We've had six including this MINI P BASS in my home. Three have been given to family and a friend as gifts.

You won't be disappointed with a SWEETWATER purchase, or a Fender brand instrument.

Love it!

By Marlon Blackwell from Emeryville, Ca. on June 11, 2021 Music Background: Drums, Vocals. A part of a pretty popular Rap Group in 1980's.

I like the way it feels and looks. I'm 6' 2" so it really looks like a Baby Bass, lol.

Mini P + flats = bliss

By Sweetwater Customer on December 29, 2020

I am loving jamming out on this. I put Rotosound short-scale flats on, and they're working great! E string does wrap once with the string part, but no problem so far.

Rolled off tone almost all the way, and I'm getting the same Motown sound I always love hearing out of my Classic Vibe P bass. Time will tell if I sell the full scale or keep it, but I love the comfort and easy of the Mini P!

sounds great

By Terry B from Oklahoma on December 27, 2020 Music Background: pro, hobbiest (rock) 50 years

i have played bass for over 50 years both professionally and as i say (the best hobby in the world). my hands are on the small side so i have always had to struggle to play as it should be done. this mini bass makes fingering much easier and it sounds great. i use it for band practice, learning new songs and just doodling around the housel. i will probably still use one of my favorite guitars (Rickenbacker) for gigs, but for the price this can't be beat.

Mini Precision

By Wes on December 4, 2020 Music Background: Amateur Bass Player

I like short scales and this one caught my interest especially after seeing a video showing how it would sound with the DiMarzio Relentless Pickups. I got this bass with the intention of doing a few mods. I had GHS Precision Flats installed and the DiMarzio Relentless Pickups and I'm quite happy with the results. One important thing about these pickups is that the screws that they come with are too long and will go through the body so just use a correct size and it's ok. I'll include the video here.

Get one. I was astonished how well it plays!

By David Gevanthor from ARLINGTON, VA on November 30, 2020

I dont write reviews but.. I dont see how they do it. This thing sounds and plays great! A bit of setup and sounds and plays really well!
The short scale makes playing very easy for someone with smaller hands or doesn't want to move around too much.
For the price I am very surprised. I got it as a project and am still going to slowly mod this thing but... it doesn't NEED it! It sounds really good stock.
The frets are decent the neck and nut are decent. Hardware is adequately decent. Had a rough tone knob but that's going to be my first mod anyway and it is still workable. Nothing horrid. No real negatives at this price...
Decently built, super light, no neck dive and the stock pickups sound... well... actually really good. Stock bridge does its job. Stock tuners work well enough (they look cool too)

Highly reccomend!
for small size, short scale, weight, sound and value for price.
It isn't a toy, you will be surprised what you can do with this little bass

Oh, as always... kudos to Cameron at Sweetwater for checking up with me.

Great quality and sound

By Paul from W on November 22, 2020

I was looking for an inexpensive bass that I could use to lay down bass tracks occasionally on at home recordings. The mini P bass fits the bill perfect.
The 3/4 size is great for storage and/or travel and the sound really is reminiscent of the Fender P bass. Personal preference drove me to change out strings with flat wounds of original grade.
Kudos again to my Sweetwater sales rep Mason!

Great bargain starter bass

By Steve from Winchester CA on November 19, 2020

This would obviously be a great bass for kids but I am not a kid and I am loving it. After years of playing guitar, this is my first bass. I got it to do some recording and have fun with and it plays and sounds great. Don't let the size fool you, this is not a toy!

Best looking sounding mini bass

By Martin Guzman from Philippines on September 10, 2020 Music Background: Crooner since 2003

I got this for the sake getting a decent bass at a low price for my home studio no problem with it so far.

Best bass I have ever owned

By Frank Vozak from OakPark, IL on September 8, 2020 Music Background: played 5 years in teens and twenties then started again in late 60's

My bass history consists of a 67 Jazz bass, a 67 mustang bass, a 67 Gibson EB-O, a2019 Squier Precision , a 2019 CB 60 Acoustic Electric, and a Sq.uier SS Jaguar. N one of these basses have played as well as my new Precision Mini. The tone is fabulous out of my Rumble 15 and plays better every time I play it. I can play up and down the neck with ease, all the way to the 21st fret. The neck is fast. It arrived with a good setup. I use a fender leather strap and have no problems with the strap coming loose. This is Fender most low cost bass but it doesn't look or sound so. I am a 70 year old bassist with big hands/short fingers and this neck makes using the whole neck a snap. If you buy one for your kid, buy 2 because you will want one for your own

great value; excellent for beginners

By Apoorva Lal from CA on August 19, 2020

the mini p-bass is really comfortable to play for beginners. The shorter scale neck makes it easier for dabbling guitarists too.

No joke - top notch!

By Johnny Rock Steady from Austin on July 31, 2020 Music Background: Professional Upright Bassist and guitarist.

The Mini-P Bass is supposed to be 'for kids' or beginners, but it has also proved a great choice for me, a guitarist-turned-bassist whose back needed a break from the weight of a "normal" bass. It plays and sounds great; very much like a P Bass should sound. Plenty of thud, but also very versatile, tone-wise. This has got to be the most 'bang-for-your-buck' I have ever gotten for $...

LOVE. THIS. MINI. P !!!

By Chris E from Levittown NY on July 22, 2020 Music Background: gigging bass guitarist, 20 years

I mainly play Precisions and, quite honestly, I just wanted this in my collection. But I'm writing this review for anyone who wants to get their kid a QUALITY starter bass. The tuners stay in tune, the bridge is solid, the fretwork is near perfect (no filing needed), knurled flat-top knobs (not domed), and he pickup is stock Squier Affinity split P. It's a great travel bass or a perfect starter. I'm even thinking about modding a Jazz pickup in there to make a mini P/J bass. GET THIS !!!!! See side-by-side pic for size.

Good tone. Easy to play

By John Hill from Indiana on June 28, 2020 Music Background: Veteran musician

I'm not a bass player but a guitar player. I got this to use for recording. The extra short scale makes it so much easier to play. The set up and action is good straight from the factory. It has a nice deep tone.

Wow!

By John from Austin on July 26, 2020 Music Background: Professional Upright Bassist and guitarist.

Nearly perfect! Sounds way better than more expensive instruments I've played, and plays very well, especially given the price. Frets were a little sharp on the ends, but not too bad. Only significant shortcoming was the tiny strap buttons, which aren't really substantial enough to rely on at all. Other than that, this bass carries A TON of bang for your buck. Maybe the best $... bass ever? I'll be using this professionally, in any case, as soon as this damned pandemic is over.

Bass for my Great Grand Daughter

By Gregory Ash on August 3, 2023

I bought this Squire mini P Bass for my 6 yr old Great Grand Daughter. I have a MIM player P Bass that I replace the pickup with a Lindy Fralin Pickup and used the MIM pickup to replace the one in the Squire Mini. Really like the way it sounds now not that it didn't sound good with the original pickup it came with, but it just has a way better sound to me with the Player pickup in it now

Tuning issues

By Terry Hoffman from KS on May 12, 2023 Music Background: Professional Musician Singer Song Writer

This bass really is not a bad instrument but, the tuners are not very good. Did and, checked everything that I know how to do and, still not acceptable. Ordered some Gotoh tuners that were drop in replacements and, they did fit perfectly with no modifications to the instrument. Still the same issues. Sent the tuners back for a refund and, sold the bass, enough headaches. I have 4 other full sized quality bass guitars that hold tune perfectly. Really was excited about the opportunity to play a downsized bass but, this one didn't deliver.

Mini P bass

By Franklin from Detroit on July 13, 2020 Music Background: Professional musician for 50 years

Love the Squier mini P bass except the factory installed strings.Need flatwound short scale strings that Fit.

Good starter

By Alex from Vermont on December 27, 2022

It's fine for what I need. Volume control and tone pots are not great. It will
Need to be set up, but for what I paid won't complain.

Not good

By Gary from Riverview, MI on November 24, 2023

Cheap tuners, cheap pickup, fret buzzing, needed a neck shim, the bridge saddles couldn't be brought back enough for a proper intonation. I can't recommend this instrument.

Instead, spend your money on an Ibanez miKro bass. Trust me. Better pickups, tuners, bridge/saddles, and playability at the same price point.
