Christmas gift for a friend
I didn't buy this for myself, but for a friend who plays bass in a band and doesn't own one for himself. His band is amazing too. I just felt right. Anyway, I did play it at Sweetwater and it sounded great and played very well. He's going to love it.
(If you haven't been to Sweetwater yet, what are you doing with your life? Get there. You won't regret it.)
Best Squier ever made
This is the best sounding AND playing Squier ever made. I would put it up against any Player or Player Plus Fender, plus you save enough money for a good amp or some pedals.
Finish: Great pearl color, love the black & white look. I am a sucker for painted headstocks.
Playability: smooth satin neck, action is low just like I like it. Out of the box it only took a quarter of a turn on the truss rod and a little up or down on the bridge saddles and then I was flying.
Sound: sold PJ bass sound with a little bit of more drive from the preamp. I prefer the split coil humbucker by itself but turning up the single coil just a bit gives a great unique sound. The active circuit isn't super powerful however, but with a $500 Squier I wouldn't expect any of the active preamp craziness that you would get out of a Warwick or a Spector. You can however dial in a bit more bass or treble than a usual passive P bass though which makes it sound unique.
My new favorite
It arrived in great shape. A couple hundred hours of play time and I want another. Asap
Looks and price are deceiving
Looks and sounds beautiful, works perfectly the first time I sit down to play it. I go to plug it in and play it again the next day, absolutely no sound comes out of it whatsoever. This has happened twice with two different models. The first one I shipped back after the tech at guitar center took the whole thing apart and still couldn't figure out the problem. They told me the preamp was bad and they were unable to replace it for some convoluted reason. Shipped it back to Sweetwater and weeks later they messaged me saying the same thing, preamp is bad. They sent me a replacement model about a month later when it was back in stock. Same exact thing happened, same sequence of events. No sound the second time I went to play it. Changed the battery, hooked it up to multiple different amps, used different cables (solid cables with lifetime warranties). Again, preamp is bad. I will say the service at Sweetwater is great and they've been very quick to help, but I wanted this bass so bad and I'm just bummed I can't have one that works. But looks and price are highly deceiving here. Don't waste your time with this one.
