Fender American Professional II Precision Bass - Mercury with Rosewood Fingerboard

By Thomas Martino from Denton, TX on December 18, 2023 Music Background: Avid player for 30+ years, currently performing with multiple bands ranging from Dio to Rod Stewart. with some progressive metal for good measure.

Wow, is all I can say. I've been considering this for almost 2 years. Finally, after endless research I Pulled the trigger. I've wanted an Amercan Precision for so long, just really struggled with the making it happen. After I purchased my Squier Calssic Vibe ^0s Precision, I remembered why.
This Americal Pro II is fantastic! The new pickups sound great. The feel, the tone, just awesome! I was quite surprised that a passive bass tone control could do so much!
Since this is not an insignificant purchase, I decided to go for broke, with a full plek pro setup! Let me tell you, whenn I played this bass for the firest time I was immediatley in love!
The setup is simply remarkable! And Mihir, he's fantastic and offered some very good input when we spoke.
Is this a bit pricey? Maybe. Considering it's passive and limited on tone options. But for me, this may be the BEST bass I've ever owned. It stands proudly with my Stingray 4.
If you're on the fence, just do it. Life is short, buy the Bass!!!

Best playing and sounding bass I have ever owned

By Robert Lastinger from LOGANVILLE, GA on July 28, 2023

This is by far the best playing bass I have ever owned, and I have owned a few of the greats. First off the finish is fantastic as you would expect from a fender. The neck has to be the most comfortable and effortless neck I have handled. Every aspect of this instrument is top notch. If you are on the fence about spending this much on a bass just bite the bullet and go for it. The quality difference between this and others is worth the price you pay for admission. There is nothing like a pbass and there's nothing like a good fender! This is the first time in a while fender has released a bass that has the old school vintage feel to it, but still Has that modern edge. For me this is the one.

Absolutely Fantastic!

By David Parker from Nashville, TN on August 23, 2022

I owned the original American professional series when it came out, and I enjoyed that, but ended up trading it for a Ric when the situation came. Now I'm back to being a P bass guy, and I own a '76 precision that I adore. Looking for another P bass to get a similar feel yet a slightly different tone, I decided to look at the Profesional II series. Recently acquiring this, it's literally the perfect complement - different in some ways, and even better in some ways! A little warmer, fantastic (possibly better!) punch, incredible feeling neck, and the tone pot is way better than the stock '76 when you roll off the tone - great clarity even all the way rolled off. Fender is knocking it out of the park with these things. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is literally perfection - every note rings and feels even. I knew it would be good based on my previous professional I experience, but this II gives vintage instruments a run for their money (and the '76 is my favorite instrument I've ever played!).

My go to bass

By William Boothby from COLDWATER, MI on August 19, 2022

Absolutely love this bass. Feels great to play and has some good weight to it. Strings feel nice on my fingers. Sounds great as well. Played several gigs with it and it hasn't let me down. Also, it's beautiful. Highly recommend.

Did I mention that this thing is drop-dead gorgeous?

By Matt G on February 23, 2022

I am blown away by this guitar! First, some context: This comes from an intermediate player living at a very high and very dry Colorado altitude who has been making do with a beginner's bass for years too long and is a self-confessed P-Bass fanboy (full disclosure).

Features of this particular bass which appeal to me include the impeccable component and build quality, the carbon fiber neck reinforcement (it definitely helps keep the neck stable at my high/dry altitudes), the high quality hard shell case (besides being the best way to transport the bass it is a necessity for me to keep the guitar hydrated when not in use), the chunky '63 C-neck (which may not suit everyone but fits my big paws so much better than the skinny neck on the rig I was using) and the tone! Oh, the tone! Based on the way this thing plays I understand why Fender used the word 'Professional' in the model name. I literally have become a better player just by picking up this bass.

Big thanks to Sweetwater Sales Engineer Jeff Jent for his knowledge and guidance during my long list of questions when comparing this bass with the Fender American Performer model. Shout out also to the Guitar Workshop guys who did an excellent neck/action setup on my bass. This thing is rock solid!

This is my first Sweetwater guitar purchase and I couldn't be more satisfied! From their vast, quality product selection, their knowledgable and helpful sales staff to the technical guys turning wrenches. Sweetwater is the real deal!

My 1st REAL PBass

By Rick Harris from Tampa, Fl area on November 29, 2021 Music Background: Pro player for a LONG time.

I've always wanted a Precision. But back in the day when I was looking, it had the "PBass Neck" that I couldn't stand. Too wide across the fretboard and too thin thickness wise. So I was browsing around the Sweetwater site, and saw this Mercury American ProII Precision. I went to the local music store just to look and feel. I called Craig and he made me a deal and I couldn't resist.
I have a Fender Jazz and a MIM Precision PJ (I love that bass), but the new Precision is by far the best sounding and it is a dream to play.
No REGERTS here! LOL
Great bass and a great play to work with.

Wow!

By Terry Stevens from St Marys, GA on October 27, 2021 Music Background: I’ve been playing bass since about 13.

I wish I could give this bass more stars! This is the best playing instrument I've ever played and my biggest surprise is how light weight it is. It plays like a dream and sounds awesome! I was having a hard time deciding on getting the Dark Night color or Mercury and had my decision made for me when they sold out of the Dark Night. But I love the Mercury color, it looks even better in person than it does in the picture. I am so glad I bought this bass.

My new bass rocks!

It is tight, strong, and accurate!

Even better ‘in the flesh’!

By Steve on April 29, 2021

So stoked that I pulled the trigger on this. My 3rd P-Bass and this ones a keeper. The American Pro ll really is a cut above the rest. I'm in love with this tone beast! The Mercury finish looks so much better in the flesh, amazing. Chris Lewis, my Sweetwater engineer, made it all possible and as always provided top notch service. Thank you Chris and Sweetwater, I'm one happy dude!

What Fender tone is all about!!!

By Kirk M. from Massachusetts on January 29, 2021

I bought this bass as a Christmas present to myself. I wanted a passive P-Bass to compliment my active Jazz Ultra. This bass was all I expected and more!! It has a slightly deeper and darker tone then my Jazz but still plenty of bite to punch through the mix in the hard rock band I play with. Hats off to Fender for making a lovely sounding bass and as always to all at Sweetwater for there outstanding customer service.

Sweet P bass

By Nick Mazzuca on February 20, 2022 Music Background: Bass player/singer songwriter/musician of over 20 years.

It needed a lot of love out of the box. At first I was pretty unhappy because I thought I got a lemon but I took it in to my local guitar guy and he set the record straight with this bass.

I absolutely love it! I feel like it to took some tweaking to get it playing and sounding to my liking but it sure is great now! I adore the feel and resonance of it. I'm still not 100% convinced on the pickups but I'm gonna give them their fair shake for awhile. I am a fairly aggressive player and use a pick often. It seems these pickups aren't super keen on that style of playing and are definitely more suited to finger style. Not to say a little EQ and judicious use of the volume can't help with that!

With that said, this is a great bass. Awesome finish. Perfect weight. Sounds lovely. However, don't expect perfection straight out of the box.

A Class Act and A New Classic

By Austin Verville from Dayville, CT on April 9, 2021 Music Background: semi pro

Got this one three days ago. The look was better than I expected. Love the depth of the Mercury color. But when the rubber met the road, I was blown away. The neck plays great the finish on the back is almost as nice as my tried and true American Standard Jazz Bass that's seen more shows and sessions than I can account for. Felt almost broken in right from the first note. The sound is true to the P-Bass tone with a little modern twist. Believe me purists will like the subtle difference. Pushes out great tone and has the Precision bump and growl. Other things I noticed is the bass is truly balanced with little to no neck dive, the hardware is solid and the case it came in is top notch. Very Happy with this one and can't wait until I can play it with friends.

Fender American Professional II Precision bass in Mercury w/black pickguard

By Sean from Upstate, NY on October 23, 2023

I've had this bass for a couple weeks now, playing it often....and I love it....Even though the color was a last minute choice, I'm loving the Mercury/black look..very sharp..and the way it's beveled...in different lighting it actually looks like a "burst" at times.

The action was pretty high when I got it....and a little tough to play...but, once I lowered the action and re-set the intonation, it plays like a dream.

I had to play with the EQ on my amp for a bit to get the sound I wanted ...but once I found it...I'm really digging this bass.

It's not cheap...but, I really wanted a USA Fender P-bass...so I saved up...and I have no regrets.

Oh...and I love the case...probably the best instrument case I've ever had. It might not be good for a hardcore touring situation, as the outer case feels a little thin...but for local gigs, and jam sessions at your buddy's house, it's awesome.

As usual, SweetWater had great customer service, and I knew if I DID have a problem with it....they'd have worked with me to get it taken care of. (That's not a guess...I did have an issue with another bass...and my sales engineer and the tech guys I dealt with were all top notch in helping me resolve it...that means a lot in today's world).

Why not 5 stars? Well..the truss rod is hard, if not impossible, to get to without removing (or at least loosening and tipping) the neck....even with the provided tool....come on Fender...either put access in the headstock, or make a tool that'll let you get to it without taking it apart! And the volume pot isn't smooth the way I'd prefer it....it's more abrupt than I like (roughly 85-90% of the volume change happens in the last 10% of the turn)...but I can change the pot down the road if it really gets annoying.

I want to stress..those are pretty minor things....don't let it dissuade you from getting one of these.
