Fulltone Octafuzz OF-2 Fuzz/Octave Pedal Reviews

Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal with Octave-up Effect

Want to nail Hendrix's Band of Gypsys-era fuzz tone? If so, the Fulltone Octafuzz OF-2 is among the most faithful Tycobrahe-style octave-up fuzzes we've heard here at Sweetwater. But that's not all it does — flip its Octa/Fuzz switch to the Fuzz setting, and you'll conjure up some of the nastiest non-Octavia grunge tones you've ever experienced. The Octafuzz is a breeze to dial in, courtesy of its streamlined 2-knob layout, and it responds beautifully to your guitar's volume control. This fuzz guitar effects pedal boasts the same brand of transistors as a 1970s original, along with a near-bulletproof Fulltone-made 3PDT footswitch and a compact — yet eminently robust — steel housing. Tycobrahe-style fuzzes are among the most coveted around, and few stompboxes deliver the tonal goods as effectively as the Octafuzz OF-2.

Exactly the pedal I wanted

By Wyatt from New Jersey on May 4, 2022 Music Background: Blues, rock, fusion guitar and bass

This pedal does the Hendrix octave thing from Band of Gypsies just fine with my Strat, as hoped for. I had a big box Octafuzz that I was able to sell for several times what I paid for it, but was missing the sound in my rig. I got this as a replacement and I think it is better than the old big box version. The octave is much more prominent in this unit and the fuzz only sound is more useable. If you are looking at this pedal, keep in mind it a very specific sort of thing. It isn't a POG or other polyphonic pedal. It is a color or special effect. It has quite a bit of wildness to the sound, which can be just the thing for your art. But it isn't a clean octave, and has an atonal quality to it, as all Octavia or Octavio type effect have. Spend some time with it and it can be very creative.

Octafuzz

By Robert from OH on March 8, 2022

Got about five fulltone pedals on my board now so I'm definitely already a fan of these magic little boxes. I always like a couple flavors of overdrive to choose from at anytime and although I don't use fuzz often, same thing there. Nice to have a silicone and geranium on hand. Already have a fuzzface (jh-1 I believe it is) and the Octafuzz is quite different sounding. Even though I'm not getting much use out of the octave switch now, I'm determined and even on just fuzz there seems to be a hint of octave already. I might prefer my fuzzface slightly, but the octafuzz has definitely found it's way into a handful of tracks.

Fuzz on!

By Tony V. from Kansas City Area on April 26, 2017

This is one very nice pedal; it can do all I want it to do. I've noticed it prefers to be closer to the front of my pedal chain; further down the chain it seems to saturate and overpower all my other effects pedals, so bear that in mind. Sounds corny, but one of my favorite features about this pedal is that is made in the USA. When combined with something like an Effectrode Tube-Vibe pedal and some delay/echo, you'll be quite close to that Hendrix / Trower sound. Nice.

Crazy good

By Robert Rogers from CA on January 23, 2017 Music Background: Guitarist for 40 years

Not only does it nail the classic tones, but in the "standard fuzz" mode it is one of my favorite fuzz pedals (and I've tried just about all of them). Cleans up perfectly when you roll off the volume, has a nice crunchy bite. What I thought would be a special occasion pedal has turned out to be one of my "always on's".

It's fantastic but explain why I bought this

By Blooby from Alachua, FL on June 23, 2016 Music Background: Gigging musician

It's exactly what I wanted. Gets that Band of Gypsys-era octave fuzz sound, especially when you roll off the volume a tad. Don't know why, but there seems to be a beautiful sweet spot when the pedal gets a little less signal. Fantastic with single-coils and P-90's (haven't tried humbuckers yet). The big question is what will I do with an octave fuzz? Can anybody explain why GAS affects some of us in such a manner that a predominately acoustic musician would purchase such a device? Will I break into Jimi's "Who Knows?" in the middle of a James Taylor medley? Does Sweetwater offer support groups, or would sales decline? These are the answers I seek.

Fulltone octafuzz

By Robert Russell from Champaign, IL on May 9, 2014 Music Background: taught guitar/bass for 14 yrs; playing for25 yrs...

Sounds too good to be true. This pedal lives up to the rave reviews. Is a match made in heaven with a wah. Octavia sounds are amazing and the fuzz alone is worth every penny. Almost whisper quiet with single coils. TONE FOR DAYS with this one. I hope MIke Fullerton doesn't start believing his own hype (which isn't hype) and raising his prices. Thanks to Sweetwater engineer Ed Nystrom, I'm gettin closer to the Jimi sound all the time.

great ring mod artifacts

By Paul from Dallas, TX on April 17, 2014 Music Background: heavy fusion mix

According to Doc Fuller this is an exact rendering of the Tychobrahe Octavia circuit built to Fulltone higher end specs. 3 ways to use this pedal, turn the fuzz all the way down and just use the octave ring mod coolness into another drive or gain. Use fuzz by itself which is really intense for ge diodes. Or both at the same time like Gary Clark Jr uses it. Great pedal for the bucks to be sure. Campers do take note this is a reverse pos pin requiring the reverse cable and do not put a buffer in front of it and get it as up front chain as possible.

Simply Amazing

By James from Atlanta, GA, USA on May 10, 2013 Music Background: Hobbyist

I first looked at this pedal because Gary Clark Jr. uses one, so that and the description really sold me. Now that I have it I am totally a Fulltone customer. I catch myself saying, "I forgot how great this thing sounds." every time I turn it on. The range and versatility of this pedal is a marvel. It goes from so clean you can barely tell its on to a fuzz so thick it almost isn't music. I love it. Very simple, sturdy design and a cool color. And I love the knobs on the side that you use to open it instead of a screwdriver. I'm slowly and carefully piecing together my rig and this pedal is a perfect addition.

Great, unique fuzz.

By CH from New Mexico on February 2, 2013 Music Background: 30 years semi-pro player

I don't know if I'd call this pedal versatile, but it does cover a lot of ground for a fuzz. It's a great fuzz in the normal mode, but the magic is in that up-octave mode. By working with picking pressure and volume knob, you can coax all kinds of bizarre ring-modulator artifacts out of double stops, palm muting or pinch harmonic techniques. The only reason I gave a 4.5 instead of 5, is that it takes a bit of tweaking to get the gain structure set so it's probably going to seem inconsistent or odd to less experienced players. Tortured funk-rock wailing for days.

Octavia

By Gary from Appalachia on July 20, 2019 Music Background: Studio Player

This is a great one to start with for those wanting the Octavia effect. Sure there are "better" ones but a premium that most would not hear a justifiable difference. Does the Octavia tone well. There is not a correct way to use these but I can say that most artist that are known for it will use it on the neck pickup with the guitars volume rolled slightly back. Seems to make the effect more defined. Good pedal. Sweetwater rules!

Good with Caveats

By Brian Drennan from MAUMEE, OH on January 1, 2021

I like this pedal, but with some minor caveats:

- The center-pin polarity thing sucks. I wish it was a negative center pin like every other pedal, or at least handled the inversion internally
- I can't quite get the EXACT Roger Mayer Tychobrahe Octavia sound out of it

But with that said, this is still a great pedal. It does all sorts of cool stuff. The "fuzz" setting is very reminiscent of a fuzz face, with all that filter-esque saturation, and if you get comfortable with coaxing the tone out of the octave, it can be used to great effect. It absolutely nails that Blue on Black lead tone when stacked with anything Klon-like (I put the OF2 first). I've started using it in places where it may not be expected.

Good sound but with faults

By Zack on September 18, 2017

Nice classic fuzz sound here that sounds great on my pedal board but the reverse polarity power supply makes it difficult as it won't work on daisy chains on existing pedal boards, and it sucks batteries dry very quickly. I would rather stick with a pedal that does not use reverse polarity.
