Great while it lasted
I dig the concept of the active dynamic. The sound was really great my purposes of brightening up my low and croaky voice, but after 13 months of sitting on one mic stand and never being moved elsewhere it has started to fail with an audible thumping noise. So maybe it's a great mic if you're really into techno, really patient, and can wait a year for it to bring the untz.
Former AKG engineers create Unique Capsule design at Austrian Audio
The folks who left AKG to develop Austrian Audio had some gray matter left over! Why not create a mic that utilises 48 volts phantom power and create a unique capsule design which segregates handling noise from the sound creation parts up top? That is exactly what they accomplished!
Perfect for my specific Use
I sing backup in a metal band while playing bass. I like this mic a lot due to it forces me to stay right in front of it. I have a bad habit of moving around and then microphones have a hard time picking me up when I need to push through. This one is seriously training me to stay in front!
We also have a very tight practice space and feedback is a constant pain in our arses. After installing this mic for me, I have cut down on feedback drastically.
I feel that this is a great mic with specific proposes.
Great sounding mic but...
I've heard a lot of great things about Austrian Audio, so decided to buy the OD505 mic. It has a great sound, but the handling noise is unacceptably loud. I reluctantly sent it back, mostly because the marketing literature says the unique design is to "virtually eliminate" the handling noise. It sounds like it amplifies it. If you plan to use this on a stand, it's great! But if you're going to handle it, I'd probably consider a different mic.

Love the fact I don't have to add gear to this dynamic to send 48v to it. Great dynamic sound, great rejection, quiet, excellent storage case (these folk are proud of their product) excellent looking too. Not for soft vocalist though. I'm real glad to have these in the locker!
